Great B- movie

It is made on the cheap and most of the acting is not great, but it has dry humor, interesting plot twists, and a “tidy” ending. I expect most people would consider it a waste of time, but then they should know better than to watch this kind of movie anyway, ‘cuz you know it ain’t Shakespeare.

I viewed this movie several years ago and found it absolutely powerful. As an advocate/speaker on the issue of child prostitution, I found the actors portraying realistic and convincing roles. Sexual abuse, abandonment and exploitation are just a few of the issues presented in this video. Sexual abuse and exploitation of young girls is not a issue that can be under-estimated. The actors took risks and great courage to present a very dark and complex issue in our society today.

Not to die for

I finally saw this film the other night, after having it on a wish list for a long time. I’m mixed on Brad Pitt – I think that his later work is really good, while his early work is pretty borderline at best – and Juliette Lewis has her moments.This was a made-for-TV film, so you know that it won’t have amazing production values, which is OK. I’m not a big special-effects guy anyways. But there is one glaring flaw with this film, a flaw that you won’t know just by watching: it is based upon an actual case, but the story was changed from that case so much that it loses its value.I have nothing wrong with writers and directors taking liberties with a story. But sometimes, truth is stranger than fiction so why change it? But here, the original motivation for the film was to take a left-leaning stance on capital punishment I believe, trying to show that our system is flawed. Well, that would be fine, except for the fact that, if you read the real story, you will find out that the Attina Cannaday character – one of the convicted killers, played by Ms. Lewis – while sentenced to death, actually had her sentence commuted and she was free on parole a few years ago. I won’t give anything away, but the movie ends quite differently.Also, there were three perpetrators; not two, as the film portrays. Why did they change this fact? For dramatic effect? I’m not sure, but I don’t believe that it was necessary to change this in the movie. And the gal who is a victim was treated, in real life, much worse that was portrayed here. Why was this changed? I think I know why, but I’ll let you decide if you give it a viewing.Almost a pass here, since they obviously changed the story for political gain. Now that would be a true crime.

Brad’s rehersal for Thelma & Louise

I couldn’t believe how close the two characters Pitt played in this movie and Thelma and Louise were. They were both scummy dirt bag roles which Brad Pitt plays very well.It was fun to watch Juliette Lewis in her early days and to reflect on how she has grown (and learned how to dance)(Natural Born Killers; Wow!).This is a good watch, but only because you know who these two stars are.If these were two unknowns, I doubt if you would bother watching it.

I would not recommend renting or buying this video as the first film on the Surfline is out of focus for some reason. At one point I had a DVD of this film and the focus was fine. There is no problem with the focus on the second segment of this video on the California Western Railroad.

When Separate Tables was released, the agents of Deborah Kerr and Rita Hayworth fought for top billing in the opening credits. It’s easy to understand after viewing this powerful film. Separate Tables is a great study in human nature and relationships among people who are far from faultless.
Burt Lancaster displays both intense anger and hopeless longing as his former wife Rita Hayworth comes back into his life. David Niven (who won an Oscar for this role) is superb as the military man with a past. Watch Niven as he is confronted with the truth about himself and how he interacts with his friends and those who once were his friends. The strength of the film is in its casting. In the hands of lesser actors, the film would turn into a very sappy melodrama. I am anxious to view the film again just to catch all the subtle facial expressions that these wonderful actors use to make their characters even more believable. A great ensemble, a great film.

Produced in 1958 by Harold Hecht and directed by Delbert Mann, Separate Tables takes place at the tiny Beauregard Hotel, a seaside resort on England’s south coast, which serves in the winter as “a refuge for the lonely, resigned, and desperate.” The main feature of the hotel is its separate tables, rather than “family style” dining, for the guests. The cast is a who’s who of fifties stars–David Niven (who won an Oscar for his role), Deborah Kerr, Bert Lancaster, Rita Hayworth, and Wendy Hiller (who also won an Oscar)–all playing characters who live as separated from the world as their tables are in the dining room. The Major (Niven) sets the action in motion when he is reported in the local newspaper as having been guilty of “insulting behavior” in a movie theater, and his war record is published. Niven is worshipped from afar by Sybil Railton-Bell (Kerr), a pathetically neurotic woman, subject to hysteria, who is totally controlled by her demanding mother. John Malcolm (Lancaster), was once married to former model Ann Shankland (Hayworth), who has suddenly come to visit him at the hotel, possibly to rekindle their flame, but he is already secretly engaged to Pat Cooper (Hiller), the manager of the hotel. A variety of eccentric subordinate characters add color, and occasionally humor, to the action. These isolated characters soon begin to find their lives intersecting and overlapping, and they eventually come to a poignant reckoning in the hotel dining room, as everyone arrives at his/her separate table. The cinematography (Charles Lang) and music (David Raksin), both nominated for Academy Awards, provide subtle emphasis for the character dramas going on in the hotel, rather than calling attention to themselves. Character dramas were less common in the plot-driven 1950s than they are today, and these characters will now be seen as stereotypes by today’s audience, and their actions predictable. Sybil (Kerr) seems particularly unrealistic now, her constant refrain of “Yes, Mummy,” an insistent reminder of how times have changed. Lancaster seems a bit out of his element as a character actor, and Hayworth, in her buttoned up blouse, seems a bit uncertain about how to handle such a subtle role. Nevertheless, this is a wonderful study of actors and acting from the 1950s, and the writing (by Terence Rattigan and John Gay), direction, and cinematography, which showcase the cast, are superb. This is a superb film that stars Rita Hayworth, Deborah Kerr, David Niven and Burt Lancaster as guests staying at an English seaside resort named Beauregard Hotel. Each of the guests contends with different problems and complications, but the one thing in common is their loneliness. Rita Hayworth is a woman whose vanity hides her fear of growing old alone. She tries to make another go of her marriage to an alcoholic writer named John Malcolm (Burt Lancaster). John however is in love with Pat Cooper (Wendy Hiller) the hotel’s manager. Deborah Kerr is Sibyl Railton-Bell, a shy spinster who is dominated by her mother (Gladys Cooper). Sibyl has feelings for Major Pollack (David Niven) a supposed war hero that hides a dark secret. This is a very captivating film with excellent performances and good dialogue. Also starring are Cathleen Nesbitt, Felix Aylmer and Rod Taylor. This is a very complex and mature film that deserves multiple viewings. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I saw “Rock of Ages” in a sneak preview tonight, and was pleasantly surprised by the overall experience. I had not seen the stage production, but I’ve seen some other stage musicals converted to movies, and have been generally disappointed, sometimes appalled (I’m looking at you, “Mama Mia!”)Set in 1987, the general plot involves a pair of newcomers to Hollywood, trying to become rock stars, but finding the closest they can get is working in the hottest rock & roll club on the Hollywood Strip. From here, the story expands to include the owners of the club, a politician and his wife who are fighting the corrupting influence of rock music, and the biggest rock god on the planet, Stacee Jaxx, played by Tom Cruise.The movie starts out pretty cheesy, and the first few numbers garnered some giggles from the crowd, but when Tom Cruise arrives, he kicks the entire show into high gear. Say what you will about him off screen, the man is a star onscreen, and does a phenomenal job in this role.The music was pretty solid, with the rock songs of the 80s performed by the actors. In stark contrast to Mama Mia!, the songs here have been studio produced, and sound great, avoiding the bad karaoke effect such performances often have. For the most part, the actors are not known for singing (who knew Tom Cruise and Alec Baldwin could sing? OK so maybe Baldwin wasn’t the strongest singer, but still decent for his role…) Julianne Hough was likeable enough as the female lead, but surprisingly (considering a music career), her singing wasn’t as good as some others.The movie got progressively better, and was quite funny. But Tom Cruise carries this musical, and did so not only with very solid acting, but a shockingly decent rock and roll voice. Without him, this would have been an unremarkable show. With him, it is a fun movie that had people in the audience singing along with the film.

MOVIE REVIEW #38: ” Rock of Ages “The first thing I want to say is that this film is about the Music of the 80′s! – Having been a young `whipper-snapper’ at the time – what surprised me most about this film – was that it was FUNNY!. Laugh out loud funny. That alone, seems to take the entire audience I was with by surprise. So-much-so, that they applauded and laughed throughout the film out loud. Like me!Hearing these songs done by Tom Cruise (Mission Impossible, Top Gun) singing Bon Jovi’s classic “Wanted Dead or Alive,” (YES TOM SINGS AND VERY WELL TOO!) to Def Leppard’s hit “Pour Some Sugar On Me,” and Guns `N Roses anthem “Paradise City.” Along with Cruise then doing duets with Malin Akerman (The Proposal, Watchmen) on Foreigner’s power ballad, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” and shares the mic with Julianne Hough (Footloose-2011, Burlesque) on The Scorpions’ “Rock You Like A Hurricane.” …was a cinematic shock to me. As well as a hysterically performed, yet really heartfelt delivery, duet of my fav REO Speedwagon song “I Can’t Fight This Feeling” between charismatic Alec Baldwin (30 Rock, Beetlejuice) and an off-the-wall Russell Brand (Arthur, Get Him To The Greek). (SPOILER: Yes, the song title tells it all!)Based on the Broadway play – which premiered at the King King club in Hollywood, CA in 2005 transferred to the Vanguard theatre in Los Angeles, CA and finally went to the Broadway stage in 2009 – It was written by Justin Theroux (Iron Man 2, Tropic Thunder), Chris DArienzo (Hot, Barry Monday) and Allan Loeb (21, Just Go With It) it tells the story of small town girl from Ohio, Sherrie – played electrically and brilliantly by Julianne Hough and the L.A. city boy Drew, again played brilliantly by Diego Bonita (Mean Girls 2, 90210) who meet on the Sunset Strip while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. Their rock ‘n’ roll romance is told through other heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Night Ranger, Pat Benatar, Steve Perry, Twisted Sister, Poison and Whitesnake .Director Adam Shankman (Hairspray, Bedtime Stories) did his best to make you tap your feet, sing along and – again – make you laugh out loud. He threaded the simple story using the dynamics of the performances and the clever `mashed’ songs of the 80′s. He definatle got the looks and hair styles of the time and even slams the popular `boy bands’ of the time. Hysterically! From scene #1 – It’s got dance, choreography and bright colors…even an adjusted LA Skyline for the times!Tom Cruise, as Stacee Jaxx, gives another amazingly eclectic, strange, exotic (and sometime erotically suggestive) and funny performance. And I never knew he could sing. Amazing voice – yes it is him – and great musical `chops’ to carry the film. Bravo Tom!Another stand-out performance was Cathrine Zeta-Jone (Chicago, The Terminal) as the religious wife of the Mayor of Los Angeles on vengeful (and personal) vendetta again Tom Cruise character the rock star himself, Stacee Jaxx! She is spicy, passionate with dance and funny and boy she can sing her version of Pat Benatar’s most popular hit “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”. Bravisimo Cathrine!Also some other standout performances came from Paul Giamatti (Sideways, Saving Private Ryan) as the crummy musical agent, singer-songwriter Mary J Blige (Entourage, Ghost Whisperer) as the club manager who takes Sherrie under her wing and Malin Ackerman (The Hearbreak Kid, Catch .44) as the confused Rolling Stone Magazine Reporter. Included are hidden cameos of REO Speedwagon’s Kevin Cronin and Debbie Gibson themselves!My only concern is that if you were not familiar with these great songs of the 80′s…will the newer generations of audiences get it? I hope so. I’m sure they will get the humor, but like me, will they be singing along out loud with the rest of the crowd – like first screenings audience I saw it with who remembers the time – way back when `Music Had Messages’? (Kinda’ of like my experience at the theatre with the film version of Mamma Mia…you couldn’t help but sing along – out loud to the hits of ABBA!) This was a fun and – most importantly – funnier than I ever expected! Another good fun family (PG-13 for provocativeness) film that tells its entire simple story – through its music! GO see it!

The Star Wars motion picture saga told the story of one Anakin Skywalker. The Clone Wars is here to tell the stories of other Jedi and of the clones. To a lesser extent, The Clone Wars fills in the gaps and answers some of the many questions the motion pictures failed to explain. As someone who has been a fan of the saga since day one in May 1977, I always wanted more than Lucas was ever able to provide on the big screen.The focus of The Clone Wars is the clones. This movie, and the 30 minute episodes shown every week on The Cartoon Network, go to great pains to show us the clones are individuals with their own personalities and quirks. They realize they are just Bantha fodder in the great Republic war machine, yet they fight and die without question. If you’re hurt, just a bit, every time a clone dies… that was point of this exercise.Not only do we learn of the clones, but also of the other Master Jedi. The Sith and the Separatists are explored in great detail. The Separatist droids provide the comic relief. You’ll recognize Lucas’s dated corny-ness in every moronic thing the droids say.If you don’t like it, no big deal. Go watch the original triology on Laser Disc and enjoy. Star Wars is George’s story done George’s way… not yours, mine or ours to tell. The Clone Wars isn’t perfect. Some parts are down right annoying. I’ve changed a lot since May 1977… and so has Star Wars.

I just finished watching `The Clone Wars’ & to be honest it was pretty good. No it’s not as good as the movies & it’s not as intense as the Samurai Jack-esk `Clone Wars’ shorts from 2003 but then again it’s not supposed to be like ANY of those. It’s like comparing apples to oranges. ALSO keep in mind that Lucas is trying to broaden his appeal to kids with this movie’s style & story telling as well as with the series on CTN so it’s going to be, over all, a bit more simple in its execution but no less entertaining. Don’t watch this expecting an Oscar performance. It is a CGI cartoon after all, how serious/critical are you supposed to take it? It has more of an Episode 2 feel to it, for me at least, but the action sequences are just as long, intense & still ‘edgy’ for a CGI cartoon. They flowed well & were non-stop action. Clone troopers got it pretty bad in this movie & the lightsaber duels left me wanting for more(longer duels, that is) but were pretty good for a CGI cartoon. It held my interest the whole time though the plot of helping the huts was a bit odd. The dialogue could have used a little help but what star wars movie couldn’t? I wouldn’t recommend buying this movie until you see it first but if you keep in mind what this movie is supposed to be/do & you don’t take it as seriously as some, then you should have fun & you’ll be just fine. Anakin’s apprentice is there for the young girls as well as to be the little miss know-it-all pain in the butt for Anakin the way he was to Ben (it’s called irony) so she may be a bit annoying for some out there (she’s better in the TV series)…and who in this world isn’t about money? There is a lot of story that can be told between episodes and he wants to tell it (whether is executed well or not). We all would do it too & you all know it.`TCW’ story line isn’t a major one in the Star Wars universe. It feels more like a made for TV movie but it ultimately starts up the TV series so there is a longer broader story to set up here as well.Simple, aims at a broader audience & still a fun watch, if only once, in my opinion.I say rent it first, watch it for what it is & go from there.

I bought this for my 6 year old son who loves Star Wars and the Clone Wars cartoons. He is always asking me to let him watch the Clone Wars on TV but it is on past his bedtime. This helps satisfy his need to see the TV series. He loves it and I think its very imaginative.

This moving story gives a believeable, touching account of a Tunisian boy’s coming of age. Halfaouine is the name of a popular, working-class neighbourhood of Tunis, where Noura lives. He is first introduced to us as a 13-year-old-boy who is still in his childhood, since he spends all his time with his mother and the women of the house and neighbourhood. We are shown this in an intimate scene in which Noura’s mother is removing the hair from her legs in his company, or when he is with his mother and divorced aunt while they are talking of women’s things.Noura has never paid very much attention to such every day happenings, until, prompted by his adolescent friends, he learns two things: that men do not keep company with women, and that women are fascinating creatures. However, the very same discovery of these two elementary facts means that his childhood has finished for good. Noura’s last visit of the hamman in the women’s time is wonderfully hilarious. He just really SEES how women are for the first time, and is duly discovered by histerically screaming women who see a man’s (and not a boy’s) eyes examining their bodies (he had promised his buddies an exhaustive report of this visit).But this awakening of Noura will not be restricted to the way of looking at women. The whole neighbourhood, where he has spent all his life, and the people who are around, are different now, too. He, and we through him, begins to see the importance of the reletions between people, and how what people think or say about you can affect your life in such a small place as Halfaouine, where everybody knows each other. He also discovers you can do things considered bad, provided nobody knows about it, and that anything you do in the open must be submitted to the judgement of your neighbours…or worse (as is the case with his divorced aunt or his politically rebellious neighbour), in short, he discovers that to be a grown-up you must sacrifice your innocence or suffer the consequences. But, all in all, being a grown-up seems promising from the vantage point of the “terraces” of Halfaouine, where Noura hangs out all day with his friends, and from which he studies and learns about life.This film not only gives us an account of the coming-of-age theme, it also offers, through the extraordinary testimony of everyday life, among ordinary people in an Arab city, ample proof that the theme is universal and, as such, an apt way of uniting different cultures through something that we all share.

This truly taboo-breaking film is the first from one of the Arab world’s leading film critics, Ferid Boughedir. Warm, sensual and witty, it chronicles a 12-year-old boy’s sexual awakening in Muslim Tunisia. Small for his age, Noura has always accompanied his mother to the ladies’ Turkish baths. But now, he’s not so young that his eyes don’t wander to the half-naked women who ignite his imagination. Too old to spend much time with the women who have pampered him for years, he’s still too young for the company of men. When released, the talk was over the way it broke new ground in Arab cinema. But with its earthy sensuality, compassion and humor, Halfaouine also became one of the most exquisitely told coming-of-age tales in recent years.

I highly recommend it for family viewing with boys who are curious or experiencing their own sexual awakening. It was fascinating to learn that teenage boys growing up in Islamic and Judeo-Christian society experience the same curiosity about their sexual awakening and the pranks they go through.One could see that there are the same taboos between the two cultures when it comes to sex education for children, i.e. parents or close adult kin or friends do not discuss their teenagers interest openly.I was rather surprised that this film survive the puritanical censors of the U.S. There was a scene of a woman stroking a boy’s penis in the bath house. And they showed a circumcision ceremony with a scene of a child’s foreskin being pulled out and about to be cut off.This film also gives the viewer an insight into an Arabic community that most Westerners will never experience in person. I thoroughly enjoyed the film.

My toddler loves all animals, so this video is perfect for her – she loves it and has watched it over and over (and over). There is a lot of music, it’s very engaging, and very educational about different animals. If you’re planning a trip to the zoo, there’s another video that you can download (Barney goes to the Zoo… or something close to that) – gives your little one an idea about the actual zoo. This episode is more about the different animals, which is great, too! I would recommend this video.

This is a cute Barney DVD with lots of music and dancing, not to mention adorable animals! Barney and the gang use creativity and teamwork to make music and incorporate animals. It is not a very long DVD, just over 30 minutes, 3 episodes, so it is great for a quick Barney movie! My sons love it because they are into both music and animals right now and love the animals sounds! Very cute DVD and great addition to any child’s DVD collection.
