5Finally! A fantasy masterpiece for the cinema!
By Mike London
A cinematic version of Tolkien’s THE LORD OF THE RINGS ranks up with the hope that Lucas will indeed make another Star Wars Trilogy, and, I think I can safely say, this is one of the most anticipated films in the movie industry’s long and checkered history. You would think it’s movie paradise, considering Lucas has been in the midst of another Star Wars trilogy and LORD OF THE RINGS has finally got a cinema deal (live action!), but PHANTOM MENACE proved something of a disappointment (Mesa Jar Jar Binks!), and I think quite a few people will enter into the theatre with a certain amount of trepidation.

There’s a reason for that. Three animated Tolkien films have been released with very problematic results. The 1978 Bakshi release is just embarrassing; the film is both incoherent and confusing.

Rankin & Bass’s two movies are fine for little kids; those two films are Tolkien for Saturday Morning cartoons. They proved my introduction to Tolkien and for that I am thankful, but the movies still fail to capture the grandeur of Tolkien’s imagination.

There are two things to consider here about a work of literature. Although all good literature has a polarization effect on its readers, this work has a gigantic legion of followers which are extremely dedicated to Tolkien’s vision (I count myself a member of this camp). The other camp cannot figure out what the big fuss is about and why they should care about the novel.

Now, there’s a reason why all this is relevant to the film: had Peter Jackson gone to far either way the film would have fallen apart. Appeal to much to the fan-base and you loose the general movie-goer. Appeal to much to the movie-goer, and you’ll lose the fan-base.

So when the fan base learned of Peter Jackson’s decision to film all three films at once, an unprecedented move in movie history, most of us really wanted it to be good but were just simply afraid. We’ve already been burnt. Would it be so bad that it would alienate both fan base and those who are just looking for a good movie?

Not only does Peter Jackson’s film work, it’s glorious, beautiful, has all the myth and grandeur of the book. Jackson, a Tolkien fanatic, could have gotten so involved with bringing out the extremely detailed world Tolkien gave us that the pacing would suffer or we’d lose patience with all these obscure details which would alienate the regular movie goer. Not only does he not alienate the general movie goer, but he entices the fan base so much they can’t help but fall in love with his vision of Tolkien’s world.

The only real flaw is how rushed first section of the movie is. Although I can understand cutting the Old Forest and Tom Bombadil, the way they handled getting the hobbits out of the Shire was unacceptable. There is not that sense of camaraderie between the Hobbits that there is in the book, there is no “conspiracy,” and Merry and Pippin just join without any questioning from Sam and Frodo. While Jackson does a good job at building the Hobbits’ characters and establishing their personalities, I couldn’t come up with a good reason why Frodo and Sam would just let Merry and Pippin join them.

The Prancing Pony is worst. There is no questioning from the Hobbits about Aragorn proving himself, there is no scene about him asking them to trust him, and the whole sequence feels much too rushed. Sam only questions Aragorn while they’re actually out of the inn and traveling.

Thankfully, however, that is the only real flaw. The rest of the things the script changed (tightening Elrond’s council, the expansion of Arwen, cutting Sam from the Galadriel mirror sequence, tempting Aragorn with the ring, etc) I can see why they did it for dramatic tension. I also liked the way they handled Elrond’s council, because that could have ruined the movie like it did with Bakshi’s. They had established and covered much of the material in that chapter elsewhere by means of voice-over prologue and actually showing the viewer what is happening (especially with the Isengard sequences), and as a result lessened the screentime of that scene and helping with the dramatics of it.

As for the controversial expansion of Arwen, I tend to agree with the film makers in their decision to enlarge her role. By making her part of the Ford sequence it introduces the character and establishes her in the viewer’s mind, and the relationship between Arwen and Aragorn is more fully explored. As for their romantic interlude in Rivendell, not only do I agree with that but think it should have been done in the book. Tolkien did not know who Strider was when he was first writing FELLOWSHIP, and did not go back and change the scenes to further explain the romance between Arwen and Aragorn, and by not including a scene in Rivendell to establish their love for one another lessens by far the impact of their union in Part III, and (for once) this romantic scene is actually an improvement on the book. As for her role in the Flight at the Ford, for the movie they made the right choice though the book is still preferable.

In achieving the balance between fan base and the more causal fan, this film is a spectacular success. Making a movie out of a book the size of Fellowship, the fact is you will have to condense, tighten, rearrange, and make changes for dramatic tensions. The mediums are different, and you cannot have a direct translation from a book to a film. Despite of what they cut, the movie still clocks in at three hours, which is very generous. The real problem with this film, as others noted, is it’s going to be a full two years before we finally get to watch THE RETURN OF THE KING.

In the end, we get a movie that stays true to the SPIRIT of the book. This is what we Tolkien fans have long been waiting for. Thank you so much Peter Jackson and your cast and crew.

5NEVER WATCH THE ORIGINAL AGAIN!
By A Customer
I just finished watching the extended version and it was like watching a whole new film! In every way, this version is superior. The thirty extra minutes are not wasted. The characters are fleshed out, the battles seem more desparate and the agony of the journey both to Rivendale and beyond is made plain. I urge anyone who hasn’t already purchased the theater version to skip it and get the extended one instead. Anyone who already has the theater version…..well this one is definately worth forking out the extra dough to get.

5Excellent Addition to your DVD Library!
By Treyka
If you saw and loved the theater version, you won’t want to miss this extended edition. I won’t go into detail about the theater version; instead I’ll assume you’ve seen it and write about the new scenes.

I was very excited to learn that these new scenes weren’t going to be a “special section” of the DVD. Instead the extra scenes were added into the movie, edited and polished to blend perfectly. There were some scenes which were altogether new; at other times a familiar scene would include added dimension.

Every added minute (I believe there were about 30 altogether) was thrilling and illuminating! For example, I enjoyed learning more about Hobbits and life in The Shire! This extended opening to the movie gave a broader foundation to those of us who knew nothing about Hobbits before seeing this movie.

Though there was some great battle footage added, a great deal of the added footage included conversations amongst the characters. These conversations gave the characters–cherished and beloved as they already were–a greater depth and warmth. It caused the obvious brotherly link of the Fellowship to make greater sense. One example is an added conversation between Boromir and Aragorn while they are well into their journey to Mordor. I’d already felt sorry for Boromir and his well-intentioned weakness for the ring, yet my husband couldn’t understand why I felt endeared to him. But after hearing the conversation between the two men, my husband was more able to understand my pity for Boromir.

Another example is the last fight scene in the movie. In the theater version, Peregrine and Merry seemed to have run off and hid throughout the battle, until they saw Boromir shot. But in the extended version, we see the courage and heart of these two Hobbits as they fight these huge, intimidating creatures with everything in them and using every resource available–even stone-throwing! I was so proud of them that I clapped my hands as I watched!

As I write, I’m the process of watching the second of the two “making of” DVDs. The first contains the process from book to movie concept. It includes a short but interesting biography of the writer, J.R.R. Tolkein (though it doesn’t mention his Christian roots). The DVD also contains much of the process of making the book into a movie–the creation of the sets (using real locations, miniatures, and computer graphics, etc)., the creation of the creatures, and the costumes. The first DVD itself is long and gets a little dry after a while, but it’s well-divided so that you can watch it a piece at a time or skip the less interesting parts.

I haven’t finished watching the second DVD, but it’s already a lot of fun! So far it’s mainly made up of character interviews where the actors talk about what it was like to work with one another. I’ve also enjoyed seeing the make-up process.

All that to say this: I highly recommend this set! If you’re a fan of the first installment of this movie series, you won’t be disappointed!

5Season Five is Fantastic!
By w.s.
The Bon Temps gang returns for the fifth season of HBO’s “True Blood”. I am a colossal fan of the show, having seen every episode since the pilot. Like every show, “True Blood” has had a few ups and downs in terms of writing. Seasons one and two were the show at its best, in my opinion. Season three was a lot of fun, but suffered from cluttered storylines and tonal problems. But, season four — although it still can’t top season one or two — was a solid return to form (and I can’t understand the bashing it regularly receives on here from other fans). So, how does season five compare? I found this year to be even better than the last; the most compelling reason for this is the fundamental shaking up of all things comfortable and familiar on the show. All of the close relationships have been compromised or changed or they’ve grown apart: Sookie/Bill/Eric, Sookie/Tara, Pam/Eric, Jason/Hoyt, Tara/Lafayette, etc. This was the year of the Break Up (friendships as well as romances). But, the interesting thing is how this made way for all sorts of new and compelling bonds to form: Bill/Eric, Pam/Tara, Jason/Jessica.Season five was definitely a game-changer (probably because it was creator Alan Ball’s farewell season). There isn’t even a clear-cut Big Bad this year. The villain could be seen as The Authority and through our infiltration of the system this year, we get the sense of just how ambiguous the concepts of right and wrong, good and bad really are to the vampires of the True Blood ‘verse. The most compelling part about this story is finally getting to see the inner workings of the Authority and how fundamentally it changes both Bill and Eric (especially toward the latter half of the season). The members of the Authority themselves, though, are a mixed bag. Christopher Meloni proves himself to be the awesome actor he is as Roman, but he’s sadly underused during the season. Valentina Cervi didn’t really do it for me as Salome, neither did Lucy Griffiths as Eric’s vampire sister Nora. The regular actors, however, were all in top form. It was a refreshing change to see Anna Paquin’s Sookie almost entirely unattached romantically. It led for some interesting directions for her character to go in, as well as Ryan Kwanten as Jason (who had what was probably his most powerful arc this year). Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgard reportedly had a blast filming this season and having Bill and Eric be partners in crime instead of foes and competitors for Sookie’s heart. This sense of fun really does show and highlights the fact that these two do have great screen chemistry together. But, my favorite part of this season was the pairing of Pam and Tara. It was a brilliant turn of writing, in many ways. Tara started off as a great and complex character: troubled but also strong, smart, and resourceful, as well as very funny. But, around the time of season three, she became the “eternal victim” in a way that was really running out of steam. Having her reborn as a baby vamp really breathed new life into the character and Rutina Wesley did a fantastic job of convincingly reinventing Tara while retaining her essence. Her scenes with Kristin Bauer van Straten were easily some of the best moments of the season, as these two actresses have wonderful chemistry. Kristin also had what was her best season yet, getting able to reveal new dimensions as well as the past of our favorite sardonic vampire Pam.As great as this season was, it wasn’t perfect. My sole criticism for True Blood is that they stop with all of the extra story lines. Not every character needs their own arc on the show. Supporting characters, like Terry, Arlene, and Holly, can remain just that. SUPPORTING characters in the story lines of the more primary ones. Some of the fat I believe could’ve been trimmed included Terry’s Ifrit drama, Holly and Andy’s romance, and some of Alcide’s wolf pack politics. Even Lafayette (one of my favorites) didn’t have much interesting to do this year.Luckily, by the time of the season finale, the writers did a good job of streamlining most of the stories into one cohesive finish. And what a finish it was! Just wondering what season six has in store for us.

3Starting to Lose Interest
By word and song
I’ve been a fan of True Blood since the beginning, but this past season has begun to test my loyalty. The seasonal villain is too far-fetched. I know the characters are vampires, but it would be nice to see even one of them maintain a successful relationship. If this keeps up, we’re going to need a flow chart just to keep up with who is sleeping with whom and who is now a vampire and who is still human. I still have hopes for the new season, but I’m only cautiously optimistic.

4TRUE BLOOD – IN NEED OF A TRANSFUSION?
By Michael Butts
I’ve been a big fan of TRUE BLOOD since its first season, catching it on its yearly DVD releases. TB has been inventive, well done and a refreshing alternative to mundane network programming. However, Season 5 finds the drama perhaps needing a blood transfusion. Much of what’s kept the show so addictive is lost in the superfluous mini-arcs this season. While appreciating attempts to supply all its cast their “place in the spotlight”, these arcs were often more a distraction than an enhancement e.g. the smoke monster, the Obama vigilante group and the overly emphasized religious and political barnstorming in the Authority plotline.Casting was a little disappointing as well. Both Christopher Meloni’s character and performance were less than stellar. The former SVU stalwart didn’t bring anything special to the role of Roman. Standout performances came this season from Deborah Ann Woll (Jessica), Jim Parrack (Hoyt), Kristin Bauer (Pam), Chris Bauer (Andy) and Ryan Kwanten (Jason). Anna Paquin’s Sookie had a more secondary presence this season probably due to her pregnancy and this lessening had a noticeable impact. Sookie is the heart of TB!But I still love the series and hope Season 6 brings some of its original magic back!

5Oh Gosh and Golly It’s Molly!
By K. Alphs
My daughter and I anxiously awaited the premiere of “Molly: An American Girl on the Home Front” and we were not disappointed. The story centers around young Molly McIntire in the small midwestern town of Jefferson, Illinois in the mid 1940′s as the United States has just entered World War II. Molly’s neat, predictable world rapidly changes overnight once the USA enters World War II. Dr. McIntire, Molly’s dad enlists in the army and is sent overseas to London, England where help is needed the most. Molly’s mother takes a job at the local aircraft plant to make ends meet financially leaving the McIntire children in the care of a neighbor, Mrs. Gilford. Molly’s family takes in a 10 year old refugee from London named Emily while Miss Campbell, Molly’s teacher looses her fiance’ during a bombing in London. Through all the changes and adjustments Molly keeps a positive attitude and a determined spirit which was the backbone of America’s homefront. This is a movie your whole family will enjoy! As a side note our family is anticipating next years American Girl movie which will be “Kit” and will be produced by Walden Media.

2A disappointed Molly fan
By Sunny Sewing Honeybee
I’ve been a fan of American Girl books for nearly 20 years, and Molly has always been my favorite character. Sadly, this movie does away with all of the magic of the books. Molly is no longer bad at math. Instead, she’s a spelling whiz. Her brother Brad is gone, and Miss Gilford is a neighbor rather than a housekeeper. Most of the endearing scenes and story-lines in Molly’s books are left out (such as Molly and her siblings getting a tree, camping, her birthday, their snowball fight, school Lend a Hand projects, finding Dad’s package and hiding it, Molly and her friends trying to give her a perm, Halloween . . . the list goes on), while some that weren’t necessary are disproportionately expanded upon, such as Emily’s. It would be easier for diehard Molly fans to point out what is the same between books and movie, rather than what is not, since the two hardly resemble one another. Only the turnip scene is here.On its own, as a movie, it’s also somewhat of a disappointment. The two people I watched it with didn’t know anything about Molly. One struggled not to fall asleep while the other read and made phone calls. The movie is presented in a series of vignettes that are hardly connected to one another, with a trauma about Dad added to the end of the movie in order to give some semblance of a typical climax and resolution storyline. Rather than being a movie about Molly, however, Miss Campbell, Dad, and Emily get a lot of attention throughout. It seems to be a movie without a focus, searching around for a plot. It also seems dark, which is in contrast to Molly’s books. Yet all the positive things that happen in the movie are things Molly could have only dreamed about in her books, such as truly getting to play Miss Victory, having her dad witness her performance, and yes–her hair can even hold a curl. It’s almost as if poor Molly has been trapped in an alternate universe, where everything that didn’t happen in her books happens in the movie, and vice versa. This should prove quite discombobulating for Molly fans!On a positive note, the movie has wonderful sets and period music, such as Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy by the Andrews Sisters, and a fun jitterbug scene. Despite that, unfortunately, Molly’s movie is not the best out of the offerings from American Girl.

3can’t help but being a little disappointed by the changes they made
By third time mom
This American Girl movie is my least favorite. Anytime a book is made into a movie you should expect the screenwriters to make a few changes from the book, but this movie seemed to stray too much from the original written books. Molly’s dad is at home at the beginning of the movie; in the book he is already gone. Molly has a younger brother in the books; he isn’t in the movie. And as a previous reviewer stated, the whole ending scene was just *wrong*. Molly’s dad was supposed to come home, not to her show. She wasn’t even IN the show in the book. But, the folks at American Girl want to sell tie-in products to the movie, so they have a new stage, theater seats, Miss Victory dance costumes for Molly and Emily, etc. I do like how they portrayed Emily and told her story, but again Emily was a much more minor character in the books than she is in the movie (again, there’s a new Emily doll for sale at AG so naturally they need to push her significance in Molly’s life). Many many other parts were changed, mom’s a factory worker in the movie vs a Red Cross volunteer in the books, Mrs. Gilford was always their housekeeper, not just after Mom went to work; little things that just seemed annoying.

By Jacqueline Boone
This is your typical man is in love with woman, woman loves someone else, yet uses the nice guy in order to save face. Ultimately, the nice guy wins in the end being a hero and great love of the woman who has his heart. She knew she could count on him and she ultimately walked into love with him.

1If you value your sanity do not see this film.
By R. Mansfield
I’ll keep it short and simple. At least for me, there are moments in life that redefine pain and pleasure. A point that you can use to envy or be thankful for. Like if you won the lottery. I’m sure that every good thing that happened to you from then on would be slightly paler in comparison. You might get a free bun from cinabon and think, “Mmmm, this is a good bun…but it’s not as good as that one time I won the lottery.Rollerball is the opposite of winning the lottery. If the lottery was where once a year someone was picked to get puched in the face on world-wide television, and one year it happened to be you, the feeling you would get of dread and unjustice would be close to how it feels to watch Rollerball. Rollerball redefined pain for me. Last month I had a horrible case of the stomach flu and spent most of 2 days staring into the toilet. During that time I was seriously thankful that at least I wasn’t watching Rollerball.I guess that is at least one benefit of the movie, and justifies it getting one star. Now all the bad things that happen to me don’t seem to be that bad anymore. Car Accident? Well at least I’m not watching Rollerball…Pet Died? At least the pet is in a place where I am sure this movie does not exist…Forget to pay the rent and get kicked out of your appartment? You get the picture.Money spent on paying someone to physically harm you is money better spent than buying Rollerball. Because Rollerball hurts you in more ways :(

5A very insightful “Episode I” of the Rollerball Murders
By Robert C. Montague II
This remake could better be understood and appreciated if one looks at it as a “prequel” rather than a “remake”. The original Rollerball is set in the far future in a 1984ish society, were as the “remake” is set only 3 years in the future (more or less it is happening right now), were the keystones of corporate society are just beginning to be set by globalization. And as you know in the “real world,” two of the main players of globalization in the Middle East and Central Asia is the Red Mafia and Islamdom, which of coarse are dependent on Rollerball in the “remake” for their wealth. Yes, there are differences in the two versions. Rollerball in the “remake/prequel” is like most novelty sports (XFL, WWF, NWO, X-Games); the players are social rejects (criminals, psychotics, Goths, thrill seekers, or athletes from mainstream sports that play too rough), it is a coed sport (so much in this sport, that the leader of the Istanbul Hawks is a woman, despite representing an Islamic State: note continual footage of the woman with the sunglasses), heavy rock music being played, uniforms that represent individual personalities, it serves as a front for gambling and other criminal enterprises, and is (officially) non-lethal. Rollerball in the “original,” is played by respected and law-abiding individuals, it is for men only, the music played is classical or at least contemporary classical, uniforms are well….uniformed, the sport replaces war as the chief vehicle of socially acceptable violence in an “One-Nation World”, and there is no denying that the game’s lethality is the whole point of the game! The key is you need to see where two movie overlap outside of having the same title. At the start of the film, you have Global leaders visiting Petrovich, with an interest in expanding this Islamo-Soviet sport ; are these people the founders of Energy Inc? The game, in the prequel, for the first time, changes its rules; in the original film, the Houston coach mentioned that the game has had numerous changes, but was still the same game (obviously two of those rule changes did away with female players and personalized outfits,). So is Jonathan E actually Jonathan Cross? Is Jonathan E.’s estranged wife Aurora? In a Special Edition Version of Jewison’s Rollerball, will you have La Guillotine digitally added to Team New York (another rule change, no team nicknames), to add to the mayhem? Will Chopin and Stravinsky replace Rob Zombie and Pink as Rollerball musicians? Probably no, no, no, and yes. But could it be true that an unknown Pay-Per-View Sport becomes society’s answer to it’s ills 100 years from now, yes.

1Perfect example of why there is no need to remake ANYTHING..
By Chris17333@aol.com
Rollerball is a remake of a 1975 science fiction film of the same name that only succeeds in showing what the world would be like if the XFL had become the rage. With how many problems this movie had in production, it was a surprise to see it touch theatres. Chris Klein, LL Cool J, and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos all phone in their roles as rollerbladers in a high stakes game that is televised worldwide. The cookie-cutter nemesis is played by Jean Reno as the owner and general manager of the tournaments. And with John McTiernan (director of Die Hard) at the helm, the whole thing is unexcusable. It looks like he is well past his prime. In the original, the hard-core sport of Rollerball was a way for the ruling government of the world to show that individual effort was useless and futile, and only ended in death. In this unworthy remake, the ruling corporations are replaced by managers of the game with no other motive than to get higher ratings and greater profits. This action disaster takes no hints from it’s predecessor. The James Caan version was timeless, using classical music to keep the movie from being dated and holding the action with a very well-done sci-fi backstory. This is a movie filled with pop music that doesn’t even fit the action and a barely-there plot that is filled with unnecessary car races and entirely unexciting action scenes. The game consists of rolling around a figure eight track with the help of rollerblades and teammates on motorcycles, trying to beat the other team by throwing a steel ball into a large gong. Unlike the strategy and planning that went into the original’s gameplay, this version looks like a circus. The action is filled with slapstick falls and dubbed-in lines with the actors not even openning their mouths. Somehow it manages to be entirely unexciting, with even the announcer looking bored and immersed on and off. Spills look entirely unrealistic and overplayed, while music completely unfitting the action drones loudly. Costumes look like chromed rejects from cirque de solei, with oversized helmets looking downright silly. All in all, for a movie named after a game, no thought was put in and these are the worst parts of the movie. The plot jumps from here to there constantly with characters changing their standings instantly; leaving the viewer without a clue as to anyone’s personality. To bring the movie up to an R rating after it’s PG-13 theatrical run, unnecessary bare breasts and dubbed-in language have been placed rampantly. Cinematography during the action sequences is indecipherable, with horrible editing added in. By the time you get to the car chase filmed in night-vision and textbook face-off at the end, you realize some movies are great on their own and don’t need an updating – they are great as they are. Do yourself a favor and pick up the original for a great action-science-ficiton romp that has brains and brawn.

3Its just a movie
By addicted to amazon
I think sometimes people just take movie reviews to seriously. This movie wasn’t the greatest movie I’ve very seen, But It wasn’t the worst either. It Was the perfect movie for me to watch on a day like this. Its was a fun movie for me !I didn’t need to get all wrapped up in it .It probably was the one of the cheapest movies ever. BUT THE BOTTOM LINE IS it was a Silly movie. Nothing was for real and sometimes that works. I say it depends on where your head is at whether you will like or dislike but you can just turn it off if you don’t. So have fun

1Utterly incompetent in every way
By C. Allen
Absolutely miserably bad in every respect… poorly conceived, poorly written, poorly acted, poorly shot, poorly directed, with bad music and bad graphics thrown in for good measure. It’s as if it was produced by people who have never actually seen a movie, only had them described to them third-hand. By a blind person. The girls are attractive…. it’s not a saving grace, just simply the only aspect of this “movie” that’s not absolutely bottom of the barrel.I have actually lost respect for Amazon because they have this in their library. How does anything this misguided and ill-conceived ever get produced? It is nearly impossible to over-stress what a piece of crap this thing is… a complete waste of time for everyone involved, from the producers to the actors to the poor idiot saps who watch this garbage. I am actually dumber for having put this in my brain. Sorry, brain.

5Victorian CSI
By Divascribe
The Murdoch Mysteries take today’s crime scene investigation shows and push them back to the 1890s. But if you think the investigative methods used then were all very primitive, think again. Detective William Murdoch and his cohorts on the Toronto Constabulary (police force) employ “finger marks” (fingerprinting), dye on paper money to catch a bank robber, phone tapping, autopsies and other techniques to catch killers. Murdoch isn’t afraid to push the envelope, even building contraptions to aid in his detecting work. Working alongside him is coroner Dr. Julia Ogden, Murdoch’s former lover who now is seemingly out of reach. You’ll see plenty of yearning looks from Murdoch when he works with Dr. Ogden, and one great fantasy scene when he actually does something about it.Murdoch is a thoroughly decent fellow who crosses himself when he sees a body and always does his best to be polite. This is my first viewing of this series — I haven’t seen the first three seasons — so at first I found him a bit too wooden, even for Victorian times. Gradually, though, I began to see the storm of emotion under that stalwart (and very handsome) exterior, and I was hooked. The 13 episodes in this set run the gamut, from attacks by what appears to be a vampire to a visit with an autistic woman — they called them “idiot savants” in those days — whose construction of an exact scale replica of her street uncovers a murder that she didn’t have the verbal skills to tell anyone about. There’s a primitive gun silencer in one episode and a sort of witness protection plan in another. There’s a great cliffhanger at the end of the season that leaves several loose ends waving in the breeze. It’s all great fun, and I look forward to seeing Season 5 when it comes out on DVD.

5Murdoch Mysteries Season 4
By Carnation
Haven’t purchased season 4, it is too expensive and I wonder why.I have purchased through Amazon all the seasons of Midsummer Murders, Inspector Lewis, Poirot–and many more, at very affortable cost, recently I purchased the NCIS series 1 through 8, at the pricing under $200.00, which I thought was a great deal. Therefore, I do not understand why the pricing for Murdoch Mysteries Season 4 is so expensive and beyond reach for many. Not sure if my “venting” will be read–but I just wanted to share that I wished I was not ‘Hooked” on the Murdoch Mysteries series–since I cannot continue to view the upcoming seasons due to the cost.Thank you

4Actually 4 1/2 Stars
By T. Stewart
The Final Season / The Last Stand By the time the fifth season of `Alias’ came onto the airwaves, the fans knew something was up: Jennifer Garner had suddenly become a box-office actress (and a soon-to-be mother), J.J. Abrams had his hands full with `Lost’ and `Mission Impossible 3,’ and the series was finally starting to show signs of its age (which included a rather large dip in the ratings), and it came to no surprise really when Abrams and Garner jointly announced that the show would not return pass its May Finale. Despite the fact that the show now had an expiration date (and the episode order was cut from 23 to 17), Garner and company seemed to get really into these last episodes, giving them everything they had and actually brought the quality back to the early years. Early in the season the regular cast went through a large overhale, getting rid of two older characters and bringing in four fresh-faced rookies… And with the new cast (and the storyline of Sidney growing up and becoming a mother) brought some much needed new blood into the series. In the form of a plot this final year focus’s mainly on Syndey Bristow growing up and learning about all the responsibility’s that come with life. She was thrown a heavy and heart-wrenching curve in the first season, and throughout the entire season she feels the repercussions from it, realizing that she is not invincible, she isn’t as young as she used to be, and that her actions affect more people than just herself. So Sydney kinda moves into a mentoring position training and working with two new members to APO, and essentially passing the reigns off to them (it was mentioned that if the show had gone to a sixth season, Garner would have left the show and these characters would have become the main focus). Since this is a final season, that means that included is not only the series finale, but the 100th episode as well. With only 17 episodes, the 100th episode was the fifth from the last and essientially served as a `reboot’ for the series taking the story from the first 12 episodes and bringing it into the home stretch… especially by bringing back old foes and friends including Sark, Anna, Will, and a few other ‘surprise’ returns… while the final 4 episode successfully tied up 99% of the loose ends left throughout the series, by the final episode the audience was still left a little confused, but I think in a good way, because if this show proved anything it was that nobody really understands what is going on in their own life. Season five, while not as strong as the first two season’s is definitely a step-above the third and fourth seasons, and highly recommended. Note also that on the same day a “complete series” set will be coming out, so if you don’t have any of the episodes, that might be the way to go…

3Not The Real Alias
By Chris D. Conway
If you are considering purchasing the 5th Season, you’re probably just trying to complete your Alias collection, right? So if that’s the case, please do, but if not, you may want to reconsider. Alias is one of my all time favorite T.V. series, and during the first two seasons, it was arguably the best show on television. But, with season 5 we have to put it in context of the circumstances going on outside of the show: Jennifer Garner (Sydney) was dating Michael Vartan (Vaughan), and after breaking up, she married Ben Affleck– and became pregnant with Affleck’s child. This was devastating for Alias Season 5. Firstly, because of this Vartan (Michael Vaughan) the crucial co-star left the show…some reports had it that Affleck didn’t want him working with Jennifer- but who knows the real story, perhaps it was too difficult working with his ex-Jennifer while she was pregnant with another’s child– it wasn’t as if he left the show to go do another project. Secondly, the action scenes for Sydney Bristow’s character were severely limited due to Jennifer’s fully pregnant figure, causing another crucial aspect of the show to vanish as well. Thirdly, Greg Grunberg, who plays Agent Weiss, left the show to pursue another opportunity and was written off, and Ken Olin, the primary Director for many of the classic Alias episodes directs only the first episode of Season 5, his last one– most likely to kick the season off on a good note at least. Add to this mess the fact that creator of Alias and core spirit of the great first two seasons, J.J. Abrams, was preoccupied with his new projects Lost and MI:3, and you have the essential causes of what happened to Alias in Season 5, which is a complete unravelling of the great show.As for season 5′s shows themselves– consider, also due to Vartan’s and Grunberg’s departure (Vaughan and Weiss), were the additions of characters Agent Rachael Gibson and Thomas Grace, who were brought in to fill the Character Void of Weiss and Vaughan, and to add a new romance aspect back into Alias replacing that of Weiss/Nadia, and Sydney/Vaughan. The fan base was not very receptive to these new characters and the replacement is hollow, falling far short of the original cast and storyline that Alias fans had grown to love. We do not feel for these characters at all, and instead of enjoying them, they’re a constant reminder of the characters who aren’t there. To cap it off, Season 5 was cut short by 5 or 6 episodes by producers, the proof in the pudding, causing the orignal planned series ending and storyline to be significanlty altered for the worse. They were forced to try and tie things up too quickly, and what we the fans are left with, is an unsatisfying, poorly wrapped up swansong for the great series. After the first two seasons, and good but not great seasons 3 and 4, this Season 5 debacle is not how Alias deserved to go out!Now not looking at it so critically, there is enough of the true Alias in Season 5 to make it enjoyable for most viewers– for all it’s troubles it’s still better than most shows, and I would even say so for the long time fans of the show as well, albeit just a shadow of its former self. For me who loved the show, it’s just too big of a disappointment in a lot of ways (many mentioned above). Alias was a great Spy World created by J.J. Abrams, that had me fully enraptured, and it could very easily have turned into one of Television’s All Time Classics, with overpowering potential and calling to be spun into feature films. But Alias turned into a Has Been, and that is a shame.

5Alias, like “Rambaldi”, goes on forever ( in our hearts)
By AliMama
As an addicted Alias fan, I can say that I have watched every episode of all five seasons (some numerous times), and I do not find some of the incongruities in season five that others have commented on. For example, how can any of us forget Sydney’s tirade to Vaughan in the beginning of season 3, when she tells him that if he had been the one that had “died”, she would have waited and believed? From that moment on, anything that happened to Vaughan (such as his supposed death in season 5)or Sydney could not be considered out of reach for this show. I mourned for Sydney’s loss of Vaughan like anyone else, but I was not disappointed for the way it was handled. Michael Vartan could not be replaced in this show any more than John Ritter could be replaced in “Eight Rules”. Yes, I found that Rachel Nichols and Balthazar Getty added little to the show, but that wasn’t their fault. They were treading in shoes that could not be filled by other characters. I LOVED the SPYGRANDPA Jack moments, such as when watching his baby granddaughter (and in his usual deadpan)saying “Apparently I’m funny”. David Anders “Sark” was underused in season 5 but was fabulous when he was used. He showed a glimmer of humanity after his tryst with a certain agent. Loved that! Through all the twists and turns, Alias always stayed true to the family dynamics, (skewed as they were in this show). If the show had revealed Irina or Sloane different than the way they ended up, those would have been incongruous plot twists. I absolutely recommend season 5, all seasons of Alias are by far the best of the best shows on television. You must watch them all, in order preferably! Thanks to all of you involved in Alias for providing great, high quality entertainment!

5Sucker Punch Extended Cut vs. Theatrical Cut Differences
By Senor Zoidbergo
The extended cut of Sucker Punch adds approximately 17 minutes and 45 seconds of additional footage, and is R-rated. The extended cut is much darker than the theatrical cut; while not necessarily being more visually explicit, previously implied suggestions are now explicitly overt. The violence and action scenes have also been extended as well, with two re-inserted battle sequences, one with the orcs at the castle (arterial spurts of green orc blood), and the other with the German World War I zombies.I don’t think I quite understand Snyder’s multi-layered metaphorical comparisons between the brothel, asylum, and Baby Doll’s fantasy worlds, but I will say that the movie (especially the action sequences) are visually stunning, and the colors beautifully contrasted. Credit especially to the actresses for their proficient firearms handling (but where exactly did they store all those extra magazines I wonder?). However, it would be superficial to suggest that Sucker Punch is only about girls in anime costumes fighting monsters in fantasy worlds, though that is certainly an interpretation shared by many critics who panned the movie. Here are the main differences between the Extended Cut and Theatrical Cut; NOTE, SPOILERS FOLLOW, so continue reading at your own risk.(1) Baby Doll shoots at the stepfather a second time (as compared to a single time in the theatrical cut), resulting in some CG blood and an arm bullet wound, which the stepfather grabs at.(2) When Sweet Pea first meets Baby Doll (with Blue and the priest), Sweet Pea says, “the priest brought you here from the orphanage to lose your virginity, right?”. Then Blue says, “The High Roller is coming in 5 days to do a little flower picking..” There is no such comment about deflowering in the theatrical cut.(3) Rocket takes Baby Doll on an extended tour of the nightclub, showing her a backstage area where clients are not allowed. She shows Baby Doll the cleaning closet where new girls are assigned cleaning duties. They pass by the kitchen where the chef makes a lewd face at the girls, who ignore him, and walk onwards.(4) Full dance number of “Love is a Drug” as performed by Blue & Vera. It’s quite extravagant.(5) The cook attacks Rocket more violently and physically in the extended cut.(6) The backstage scene where Baby Doll explains her plans is extended. Vera writes the order of the dancers, with Sweet Pea performing first. Rocket and Sweet Pea then sit down, and Sweet Pea tells Rocket that she won’t help Baby Doll.(7) In the World War I scene, the Wiseman briefs the girls for a little longer. The map they are to capture is a map of the trenches and troop locations, the map will be sent via courier by zeppelin. The Wiseman then asks Amber how she likes the mech, to which Amber replies in the affirmative. The Extended Cut includes a great shot of the girls slowly walking out of the fog into no man’s land, and additional shots of zombie German troops rushing out of their respective trenches. Amber shoots down several attack German fighters before herself flying skyward, and Blondie grabs her Daewoo K3 and mows down a horde of attacking zombies, littering the battlefield with their corpses. There is additional hand-to-hand and (hatchet-to-bayonet vis a vis Blondie) combat in the trenches, and Baby Doll fights the Zombie commander initially in an extended sword fight. I’m glad they extended the WWI sequence, it looks fantastic.(8) Vera tries to cheer up Baby Doll pre-performance with a quote by Mark Twain about illusions.(9) The orc/castle/knight siege scene has been heavily extended, most prominently featuring a new scene of the girls jumping into the courtyard, and decimating the orcs using firearms and edged weapons, while performing various acrobatic maneuvers. Green orc blood spray across the screen. Additional shot of knights trying to break through the gate with a tree trunk. Extended combat scene of girls versus knights, and slow-motion scene of Blondie firing the side machine gun.(10) Blue tells Baby Doll that he will “pop that smile right off of her face”, whereas in the theatrical cut, he falters without completing the sentence.(11) The sequence where Amber is killed shows Blue’s gun being fired twice, rather than the slight vibration in the wine glass. Blue shoots Blondie when she’s on the ground an additional time. Nothing graphic is shown.(12) Blue attacks Baby Doll for a longer period of time (and more physically) in the extended cut, when backstage.(13) After Baby Doll is knocked unconscious, Sweet Pea steals a white dress while on the lam.(14) During the last, infamous scene between the High Roller and Baby Doll, white gloved hands undress Baby Doll down to her skivvies. High Roller and Baby Doll talk, and High Roller doesn’t just want to deflower Baby Doll; rather, he wishes to grant her freedom from everything, in essence, granting her absolution. Baby Doll seems quite taken and the two begin to kiss passionately, but no nudity is shown. The Extended Cut directly links Baby Doll’s deflowering in the brothel to her lobotomy in the real world; I can understand why this scene was cut to make the PG-13 rating, as it’s rather sexually suggestive.

4Blu-Ray Review (Updated: July 6th)
By Private Quentin Tarantino Fan
Note: I wrote an original review for the film only way back when I saw it, which was actually on opening day. Now that I have acquired the Blu-Ray version of Sucker Punch, I will write a review. My consensus though is to purchase the Blu-Ray package over the DVD, so if you just want to read my thoughts on the movie, skip this section. I will review the Blu-Ray. If you are wanting to know everything about the layout and the general features, Amazon is correct with both product descriptions, so you can trust them. When I first saw Sucker Punch in theaters, the art direction, CGI, and the colors was absolutely jaw dropping; this was one of the movies that I could see blasting on my TV screen. Well, I am happy to report that Sucker Punch looks and sounds terrific on Blu-Ray. Given the sensory overload Sucker Punch provides, one can only imagine how the potential of the , and the transfer does its justice and brings Sucker Punch to complete life upon your HD TV. The picture is crystal clear and sharp, which gives way to an absolutely dazzling high definition picture on screen. Sucker Punch’s intense colors, elaborate architecture, and stylized visuals all come to life onscreen, with a visual intensity on the same boat as any high production value video game would be able to achieve (Think Uncharted 2 or God of War 3. Sucker Punch can surely compete with both games in terms of visual splendor). All the little details of the visual intensity absolutely stand out and are crystal clear. You can see everything little snow-flake, bit of explosion, and piece of dust, yet the little details don’t substantiate the stylized and beautiful landscape and architecture. I give the picture an easy 10. It looks absolutely amazing. So safe to say, it is ABSOLUTELY worth buying for television viewing. The audio is not quite as impressive as the picture of the film (seems fitting, however, given the visual approach to the film), but the sound is no slouch either (I think this has to do with the fact that the Sound design by default is not as good as, say, Saving Private Ryan or Lord of the Rings). Sucker Punch will still work out your home theater system, so if you have a great sound system, it’s time to watch Sucker Punch with it. The movie really takes advantage of the DTS Sound track, as you will be able to hear the explosions surround you, the bullets clanking, whizzing, and whining and all around you, and the adjacent sound effects to the visual keys that Zack Snyder is so fond of using is crystal clear and satisfying. Your theater will rumble, and you will be totally surrounded by the immersive sound to really match the whole movie. What else could you ask for? I give the sound a 10, although the sound design is a 9.As most of you already know, the Blu-Ray version of Sucker Punch adds 18 minutes to the movie. This is a whole 18 minutes of new film footage. More dialogue is added to certain scenes, and while they really don’t radically make the story better in a way, it does add some fluency and color to the movie. These add more color and life to the characters and situations. There is also more action to make those peaks and valleys of the action more effective, and there are a couple more graphic shots to the action scenes, as there is a bit more gore. There is also the cut scene that Snyder had to remove (which deals with a sexual encounter), The most prominent addition to the film is a eye catching and theatrical musical number, and it doesn’t at all tone down the pure visual and aural onslaught the movie previously had. I’m not going to give out spoilers but the is worth seeing and makes the movie even more of a blast than it was in theaters. Really, what else can you ask for?As far as the rest of the special features go, here they are.Maximum Movie Moment with Zack Snyder: The informative and fun special feature from the Watchmen Blu-Ray returns for another round, with Zack Snyder stepping out of the director’s chair to give us more insight as to how the film was made, all interactive and almost feels hands-on to an extent. In the Maximum Movie Moment, Zack Snyder discusses how certain interesting and intricate shots and portions of the film were made, which really satisfy the question of “How did they film that?”. He is not on-screen the whole time, but there’s more than enough useful information to make the feature very worthwhile and awesome. In addition, some sketches and storyboards are thrown into the mix. Zack Snyder really shows how, and with something as interesting and useful as what he does with MMM, who needs it?*Sucker Punch: Behind the Soundtrack-A somewhat interesting mini-feature regarding the unique and stylistically interesting sound track. Unfortunately, it’s wait too short. Giving the short running time (only 3 minutes), Zack Snyder and and company do not go into much detail when it comes to the soundtrack. They basically just give a loose overview of how they came up with the soundtrack. That’s it. Sure, it’s interesting, but honestly, however, it’s not a must see special feature.*Four motion comics: These four “comics” remind me of a moving graphic novel of sorts. I think they are not substantial, but they do give background and interesting that further flesh out parts of the film. On the downside, each of them are only 3-4 minutes, and there are only four of them. At least they cut to the chase, which, actually, may strengthen their impact. In addition, the Blu-Ray Combo pack, as you can tell, also comes with a Digital copy and a DVD of the theatrical release (NOT a Blu-Ray version). Be quick though with the Digital copy; however, as all of the digital copies I have owned eventually expire. Finally, should you get Blu-Ray or DVD? As mentioned before, I do not own the DVD, however, my best advice would be to spend the extra money on the Blu-Ray version of the movie. The Sucker Punch DVD is a bit too bare bones, as the two special feature that the DVD have the run time of less than 20 minutes. Another nail in the coffin when it comes to the two is that the price of the Blu-Ray is not much greater than the DVD. Personally, I would recommend springing for the Blu-Ray version, hands down. If you do not own a Blu-Ray player and have no intention of ever getting one, I can see why one could settle for the DVD. But if you in any way have a choice between the two, I would recommend spring for the Blu-Ray version for sure.ORIGINAL REVIEW:After being disappointed with Battle: LA in theaters a couple weeks ago, I crossed my fingers and hoped that Sucker Punch would be the good Spring movie that kicks a major amount of @$$, like Kick @$$ did last year. Well, I put my trust in Zack Synder, and he didn’t disappoint. Sucker Punch has got some critical backlash, but what for? Who cares anyway? Sucker Punch, with thrilling action, a massive scope, the patented Zack Snyder style of film making, and absolutely GORGEOUS imagery sensory overload, make this film a must see. It also happens to have some actual decent acting (well, a little over the top, but for this movie it makes sense) and a plot that actually not half brain dead.So what is this movie about anyway? Well Sucker Punch, while not totally original (the film conjures up many other works as influences, such as Alice in Wonderland, Philip K. Dick, and The Matrix), is a film that blends themes such as freedom, reality, identity, the power of imagination, and escapism, among other things. Sucker Punch is a film that deals with a young girl who is framed for murder, and is about to experience a lobotomy. Given five days of her sanity, she then makes a list of things she needs to escape the institution. Through dancing in order to distract certain members of the mental institution/brothel to get the things she needs to escape (yes, you read that right), she teams up with four other patients to escape the place they have been held in.Character development, I’ll admit, is pretty sparse here. You pretty much know the characters themselves very quickly, and there’s nothing too revealing or deep about them. Thankfully though, the film manages to make the characters interesting and likable, thanks to the acting. Sure, you don’t find any Oscar winning performances here, but I think it works by just letting the actresses and actors just act like, well human beings, and it’s very much present here (that is, if people actually pay attention). I actually think this work better than trying to add a bunch of stupid back stories that we’ve all heard a million times before; a cheap way to try to humanize a character if you ask me. Snyder is also able to milk the likability of these young actresses to make, them, well, likable, so for all of it’s positive aspects characters are not really a problem. As long as you are not expecting the character study that Snyder’s Watchmen was a couple years ago, there won’t be much problem here.Sucker Punch, also, has a very emotional undercurrent to it’s dilemmas, which was all the more powerful and effective. There’s something about the motives of these people and what they are doing that really gives the film the various subtexts it needs, no small feet there. Sure, it’s still an action film at heart, but Sucker Punch does leave quite a bit to talk about, and no harm can come from that. All well and good, but that’s not even the best part of the movie…..The best part though, is this film is a VISUAL medium no halls barred. I’ve seen three Snyder films, and Sucker Punch outclasses both 300 AND Watchmen. Snyder sure knows how to really use the visual film medium, and Sucker Punch holds nothing back. Iconic slow motion everywhere, massive sweeping cinematography, and a unique melding of aesthetic make Sucker Punch have more visual delights in one film that the most of the other bid budget films released every year do combined. Most importantly, Snyder has a sense of wonder and awe that so many countless big budget action films are sorely lacking, the imagery forces your to look on. I must have sat in the theater with my jaw dropped the whole two hours. From huge castles and dragons, dark and grimy asylum halls, Gothic WW1 wastelands with zombies, to a truly awesome futuristic land of trains, futuristic cities set in a galaxy next to a planet. In addition, music and sound also plays a integral role as well, with tons of great sound effects, and a soundtrack with songs from Jefferson Airplane, Pixies, and The Beatles filtered through a dark, almost cyberpunk type of aesthetic, as sweeping as the imagery on screen. Indeed, everything about the film making is first rate. The elaborate worlds that Babydoll and company are thrust into are amazing to look at. Massive, eclectic, and designed with incredible detail, Snyder did not stop at all in making truly immersible and jaw dropping worlds. Add that with Snyder’s great use of music, and you got one heck of a great movie experience. These worlds are as imaginative as you would expect from any Grade A video game, and Snyder doesn’t hold anything back in his head. You won’t get any lukewarm art design when these action scenes hit the screen (in case you haven’t figured it out, all the action scenes are in their head). Speaking of the action, it’s, for a lack of a better word, absolutely thrilling. It’s just as good as you would expect from Snyder. Massive monster fights from cool looking Samurais to dragons, lot’s of guns, huge explosions, heart stopping action that feels like it can pirouette on a dime, it’s all here and more. It doesn’t let up the intensity either, and each one is a roller coaster ride of sheer movie delight. It has all the giddy thrill you would get from watching movies such as Transformers, 300 (yes, same director I know), or Kill Bill (although obviously not R rated), so that’s a big compliment on Snyder’s part.Alright, if my rambling hasn’t convinced you already that this movie is worth seeing, then you might as well skip it. Ignore the critical backlash Sucker Punch has received. It’s totally worth seeing. It’s clear that Zack Snyder always takes pride in his films and loves making them to make them, and it shines through here. As long as you are not expecting Andrei Rublev or a Mike Leigh film, you should at least go into the movie knowing what you are going to get. Sucker Punch, thanks to the visionary and imaginative directing of Zack Snyder, is easily an action film that, well, beats out the competition. Recommended.

5Took me three watches to finally really get into it, but it’s more than worth it.
By Lane Neuroth
This has future cult favorite written all over it. Complex, awesome special effects, and a fun cast to boot. If you didn’t enjoy it the first time, I definitely recommend watching it again. Zack Snyder really shows off his skills with this film and I can officially call myself a big fan of his work now. So enjoy and make sure to go in with an open mind.

5Fracking A
By Steven R. McEvoy
This is the best show on TV right now. Maybe the best Sci-Fi show ever. If you are a sci-fi fan, this is a must-see show. If not, you should still consider checking this out. Yes, it is in space and yes, it has killer robots, yet even with that, the depth of human drama is comparable to anything on TV today.Last season, the 12 Colonies of Kobol were nearly blown away by the Cylons, machines that resemble humans and the old warrior mechanical types. The humans almost ran out of water and fuel, yet somehow manage to survive. This ragtag group of human refugees is in search of a 13th lost tribe of humans on a planet called Earth. Things this season start out badly, and they only get worse. Both of the leaders of the fleet are incapacitated at the beginning of the season. President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell) is in Galactica’s brig for inciting Lt. Kara “Starbuck” Thrace (Katee Sackhoff) to mutiny which caused the loss of the Cylon Raider that had been captured, which was a valuable military asset. Commander Adama (Edward James Olmos) was shot by “Boomer” (Grace Park), who is a Cylon,The second season here picks up right where the first season left off. However, unlike most TV shows, the problems presented in the Season 1 finale are not resolved in the first episode. Some will take the whole first part of the second season to be resolved. As we learned in season 1, there are 12 models of Cylons. The question is: is the Raider (ship) and Warrior, unit 2 of the twelve, or are there 12 models that resemble humans? We do have the introduction of 2 new human-form cylon models (bringing the total to 6/8, leaving 6/4 left to be uncovered), and the reappearance of political activist/terrorist Tom Zarek (Richard Hatch, of the original Battlestar Galactica).A unique feature this season, and one that is a most interesting addition, is a textual representation of how many people are still alive. Each week in the credits, there is a sentence which lists the exact number of survivors, and it changes every week, depending on how many people died (or appeared) the episode before. In comparison to Season 1 it is hard to say which is better. The 13 episodes of Season 1 were all great. In the first half of Season 2, there are also no bad episodes. Battlestar Galactica season 2 has such powerful episodes as ” Pegasus” and “Scattered”. Yet the best episode of the Season 2.0 DVD is ” Valley of Darkness”, which in my opinion is sheer brilliance, and possibly the best episode of the series. This is one of the best shows on TV right now, according to many media outlets. “A Breakaway Hit!” -TV Guide and “The Best Show on Television.” -Newsday are but two examples of the rave reviews it has received. If you are a sci-fi fan, this is a must-see show. If you aren’t a sci-fi fan, you should still consider checking this out. Even though it’s in space and has killer robots, it is more human than most other drama shows on TV today. So say we all.Anyway, for those who haven’t seen this show, but you like a good character drama, be sure to check out this show on DVD. I believe it’s even better on DVD. Much like Babylon 5, there is a single story line, with multiple story arcs all tying into that one line. So there is continuity between each episode…and unlike Star Trek, they don’t hit the reset button between each episode or movie. What’s damaged on a ship in one episode stays damaged in following episodes, as the first season takes place just over a 3 month period.I recognize that this is a compelling drama that just happens to take place in outer space. It deals with many weighty subjects such as genocide, human flaws, paranoia, depression, and religion. The creators of the original 1970′s Battlestar Galactica included many Mormons. On the Internet there are hundreds of articles looking at the religious imagery, the Mormon end-time theology. The religion themes are just as powerful in this new series and this series has practicing religious (clergy – faithful believers), visions, a drug to induce religious visions, and the president believes she is to fulfill prophecy and save humanity. This is possibly the best Sci-fi series ever!So say we all.

5First half of the sophomore season of a great show!
By Thomas Anderson
Like a previous reviewer mentioned, when Sci-Fi Channel announced that they were producing a new BSG show, I was causiously optimistic. I was hoping that it would revive an old classic. To a lot of people’s surprise…it did. In fact, the new Battlestar Galactica has been called the “Best Show on TV” by a lot of media organizations. However it’s getting some flak by a small but vocal group of die-hard fans of the original show. So much so, that they have banned discussion of the new show on their web site. Yes, I’m talking about you guys at ‘CF.com’. “Family show…” Eh? Ahemmm…the new show was never billed as a family show. It is clearly an adult drama set in space. I’m as conservative as you all are, but I know the difference between ’70′s space cheese and 21st Century sci-fi.Anyway, for those who haven’t seen this show, but you like a good character drama, be sure to check out this show on DVD. I believe it’s even better on DVD. For one, you don’t have the commercials and second, you don’t have to wait between weeks for the the next episode. There’s a lot of continuity between episodes…and unlike Star Trek, they don’t hit the proverbial “Reset Button” between episodes. What’s damaged on a ship in one episode stays damaged in following episodes, as the first season takes place just over a 3 month period. The second season here picks up right where the first season left off. The major plot thread that was started with the first season’s finale 2-part cliff-hanger, is built upon and concluded in the the first 5 or 6 episodes of the second season here. The remaining couple of episodes are more of stand-alone type episodes that are probably building up to what is to occur in the second half of this season which will air from January thru March. Now then, why is Universal offering just a half season here? Who really knows. Although getting these episodes out before the second half airs is not really a bad thing, just a strange thing. I guess since the show is such a hit, Universal figures that they could boost their ratings for the second half if they get all available episodes out on DVD before the second half airs. This set, however, will include a “90-minute” (60 minute actual) version of the mid-season cliff-hanger episode “Pegasus”. So with that, there’s at least some incentive to buy this set rather than wait for a possible full season set next year that may or may never come.UPDATE: I’ve been informed by a very observant reader that my above post is inaccurate with some out of date false information. I agree. So without further adue, I’ll update the info below.Above I said that a 60+ minute version of “Pegasus” was going to be included on this set. That is incorrect. First of all, that fact was just a rumor spawned by what was said during one of the Podcasts, I believe. However, due to time constraints, Universal Studios was unable to “ready” the extended version of “Pegasus” for this release. Why so? Who knows…However, it has been reported that the extended version will be on the 2.5 set that will complete the second season. So in essence, fans who have bought both sets will have both versions of this episode. This is similar to the recent problem with the Stargate SG-1 Season 8 set in which the extended 60+ minute version of “Threads” was supposed to be included, but ultimately wasn’t. This was remedied by a mail-in offer done by CheckMyRebate.com.Also, I mention that a full season set, may or may not be offered eventually after the entire season is done airing. After acquiring the 2.0 set, I noticed that there is a half of a image on the spine. The image being one half of the Galactica Seal and President Roslin. I assume the 2.5 set will have the other half of the Galactica Seal and presumably a pic of Commander/Admiral Adama. So with that, I’m beginning to assume that a complete Season 2 set may not in the future. Although I may be proven wrong…but we’ll see.

5Mutinies, Madness, Mystery
By Andrew
It’s hard to believe that things could get any worse for the 50,000 humans left alive in the universe. Last year, the 12 Colonies of Kobol were nearly blown away by the cylons, machines that resemble humans, nearly ran out of water and fuel, and had the two leaders somehow incapacitated. Commander William “Husker” Adama (Edward James Olmos) was shot by Junior Lt. Sharon “Boomer” Valerii (Grace Park), who turned out to be a cylon, while President Laura Roslin (Mary McDonnell) was put in Galactica’s brig for convincing Lt. Kara “Starbuck” Thrace (Katee Sackhoff) to defy Commander Adama. Starbuck is now on Caprica, stranded with Lt. Karl “Helo” Agathon (Tahmoh Penikett) after another copy of the Boomer cylon stole the ship that Starbuck used to get to the planet. Captain Lee “Apollo” Adama (Jamie Bamber), the commander’s son, is also under arrest for attempting to stage a mutiny with the president and pointed a gun at the head of the Executive Officer of Galactica, Col. Saul Tigh (Michael Hogan). Finally, Vice President Dr. Gaius Baltar (James Callis), Chief Gallen Tyrol (Aaron Douglas), Lt. “Crashdown” (Sam Witwer), and Specialist Cally (Nicki Clyne) are stranded on Kobol and are surrounded by cylon centurions. As I said, things start out bad, and they only get worse. With the older Adama unconscious, Tigh is put in charge, and it is clear that he is no leader. He has an alcohol problem, an ambitious wife (Kate Vernon), and a surly attitude towards most people. Furthermore, his relationship with Apollo, who is the head pilot on Galactica, is obviously very strained now that Apollo put his gun to Tigh’s head. In the first two episodes, Galactica gets seperated from the rest of the fleet, leaving the civilians defenseless, and a cylon raiding party boards the ship and attempts to take out the ship from within. On Caprica, Starbuck and Helo try to find a way off the planet, only to run into a human resistance group that has been operating out of an old hospital. But they aren’t the only ones that Starbuck finds; a frightening plot is uncovered by her when she encounters a group of cylons. Meanwhile, the people on Kobol are forced to fend for themselves while Galactica is busy trying to find the fleet and deal with Boomer. Number Six (Tricia Helfer) begins to get a firmer grip over Baltar’s mind, and gets him to do more and more questionable deeds. And that’s all in the first few episodes. Unlike most shows, the problems presented at the end of Season 1 aren’t solved in the first episode. Many of them are so deep that it requires multiple episodes to resolve certain characters’ predicaments. I’m going to give a small spoiler by saying that eventually, everyone makes it back to Galactica, meaning that Helo is back on the ship for the first time since the Miniseries pilot. Of course, this creates only more trouble due to the bizarre love triangle that exists between Tyrol, Boomer, and Helo. Each man loved her, and in S1, they each got to know a different copy of the same model. Now, they both have a love/hate relationship with the copy remaining on Galactica. Further troubles come about through the paranoid actions of crew members (my favorite involving Specialist Cally), the introduction of 2 new human-form cylon models (bringing the total to 6, leaving 6 left to be uncovered), and the reappearance of political “activist” Tom Zarek (Richard Hatch, of the original Battlestar Galactica). These 10 episodes further prove that a science fiction show can not only be good, but be amazing. It is a shame that this show is overlooked by many people as just a “sci-fi” show, but it is so much more. Most critics as well as the relatively large number of fans (for a show on a cable genre network, it sure does get good ratings) recognize that this is a compelling drama that just happens to take place in outer space. It deals with weighty subjects such as genocide, human flaws, paranoia, and religion. This season retooled the opening theme a little bit. The music is now the chant used in Season 1 in the UK (instead of the march used last year in the US), and while most of the clips are still from the miniseries, there are a few from the previous year. For a while, the second part of the credits, which showed scenes from the episode set to a drum beat, was removed, only to be replaced halfway into the run (fortunately). The most interesting addition is a textual representation of how many people are still alive. Each week in the credits, there is a sentence which lists the exact number of survivors, and it changes every week, depending on how many people died (or appeared) the week before. It’s hard to say which season is better (so far; this is only half of S2, which I’ll get to soon). The 13 episodes of S1 were all great. In the first half of S2, there are no “bad” episodes per se, but there are some episodes that don’t seem up to the usual quality that we expect from Battlestar Galactica (such as “Valley of Darkness”). However, the best episodes of the season (so far) have been absolutely amazing. “Scattered”, “Home, Parts 1 and 2″, and “Pegasus”, which in my opinion is the best episode of the series so far, are sheer brilliance. As for the whole “Season 2.0″ thing, I am very upset about this. All the respect that I had for Universal for releasing the Miniseries with the S1 set evaporated when I learned that they were pulling this stunt. Due to the schedule of the Sci-Fi channel, they are releasing the first half of S2 before Christmas, and then when the season ends in March, they’ll release the second half, thus forcing us to spend more money on these two sets than we would have to if it were one set. I really hope that they eventually release “The Complete Second Season”, and I will hold off buying this until I get a definitive answer. If there isn’t going to be a Complete S2 set, I will buy both sets (I will be a little ticked off, but I love BSG too much), but if they release a Complete S2 set, I would reccomend buying that one. This is one of the best show’s on TV right now. If you are a sci-fi fan, this is a must-see show. If you aren’t a sci-fi fan, you should still consider checking this out. Even though it’s in space and has killer robots, it is more human than most other drama shows on TV today. So say we all.
