5Warning!!! READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE YOU READ ANY OTHERS!!!
By Arlee Bird
Why read this first? Because hopefully there are no spoilers here. In so many of the reviews for this movie, as well as others on Amazon, people seemed compelled to give a total synopsis of the movie all the way up to the end — especially if they didn’t like the movie. It’s like if they didn’t care for it, then nobody else needs to see it. Well, I’m glad that I didn’t read any of the reviews here before watching KNOWING because I enjoyed not knowing and being able to decide for myself. And my opinion is that KNOWING is a very fine movie. The previews tell you what you need to know: A time capsule which contains school children’s drawings about what they think things will be like in 50 years is opened in the present day. An astrophysicist (Nicholas Cage)gets hold of one submission which is a lengthy series of numbers. He discovers that the numbers predict future disasters, most which have happened, but a few that are still to come. His mission becomes to avert the disasters. There– that’s all you need to know about the story, now sit back and enjoy the movie. Here’s what I am knowing:1) If you hate Nicholas Cage you will hate the movie.2) If you are a total science fiction geek you may not like this film as for me it was more spiritual than scifi.3) If you don’t like spiritual things, don’t like God or the Bible, or don’t want to be thinking about anything like this then you should stay away from the movie.4) If major disasters are something you don’t want to watch a movie about then this one is not for you.5) If you prefer mindless comedy or romance, Knowing probably won’t be at the top of your list.6) This was my kind of movie– I was thrilled, entertained, and uplifted in the end. I rented it, but I will probably want to add this to my collection.

5Childhood’s End
By John Blow
I noticed early on that “Knowing” had been receiving scathing reviews from cinephiles who called the movie “cliche,” “trite,” and “derivative.” Most of these criticisms were impassioned and seemed to compare the movie to false estimations of what the film should have been. There is nothing wrong with wanting a movie to subvert or defy your expectations; but there is something unfair about not recognizing a film for what it is, especially when the movie succeeds so brilliantly in achieving its end result. “Knowing” starts off like a typical apocalyptic thriller rooted in numerology. But slowly the momentum of the film builds with each carefully crafted scene, so its suspense dissolves into a profound study on loss and letting go. “Knowing” is about knowing your place and role in the universe, and accepting it; and as hard as it may seem, letting go of your loved ones for their betterment — even if its at odds with your own private longings. The ending could have played out many different ways — with us not seeing where the children ultimately arrive so that Cage’s character is left only “knowing” in his heart — or having faith. Proyas is a benevolent director, so he allows us to see that the children indeed go on to a better place (whether this scene is the last thought in Cage’s head or a scene that takes place outside of Cage’s existence could be a subject of debate) because the story is trying to help us understand when it is necessary for our own peace to let go of our philosophical Materialism. I think it’s unfair to label this movie as “cliche” — Proyas and writers simply used the generic conventions of your standard “end of the world” movie to turn the genre on its head and give you something more lasting than special effects. For those of you who loved this movie — read Arthur C. Clarke’s “Childhood’s End,” a novel which Proyas alludes to in “The Knowing.”

5Great movie for the intelligent…too much for the simple.
By RaftNBikeAllDay
This is an excellent movie but it will not be for everyone. The people who wrote the screenplay seem to have made the mistaken assumption that the average moviegoer is also well-read and educated. This, sadly, is not the case. The plot line of Knowing is rooted in some rather obscure and/or less-than-mainstream ideas. These include Chaos theory, the ideas of Von Daniken, ancient astronaut theory, astrophysics, and certain alternative facets of spirtuality. If you are the type who likes a movie that makes you think and question then this will be perfect for you. And if you like it then spread the word to your more intelligent friends!Knowing is perfect for those who appreciate some thought being put into movies. For those who prefer mindless and simple entertainment, then you have your choice of many other movies.

5A Bold Experiment, A Fascinating Film.
By Mr. Bakunin
Steven Soderbergh’s “Che” is one of those rare films where you’ll either like it or hate it. It is not a conventional biography, it isn’t even a conventional movie. Soderbergh is not interested in presenting a loud, thundering film about the icon Che Guevara, but instead he wants to provide an almost scientific analysis of a man driven by an idea and the campaigns he engaged in. Like Sofia Coppola’s “Marie Antoinette,” this isn’t a movie interested in bold political statements, it is simply trying to present events as they are known to have happened. It doesn’t matter much whether you’re a right-winger or a leftist, Soderbergh doesn’t champion or attack Che’s political views or goals, he simply presents a man’s actions.Benicio Del Toro (Traffic, 21 Grams) plays Guevara with an uncanny resemblance and a powerful presence. We meet him in Mexico City in the 1950s where he meets a group of Cuban exiles plotting the overthrow of the US-backed dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. It is here that Guevara meets Fidel Castro (played by Mexican actor Demian Bichir) who lectures him on the dire conditions for Cuba’s poor and convinces him to join the revolutionary expedition sailing back to the island on the famous Granma boat. Soderbergh intercuts the jungle campaign in Cuba with black and white passages capturing Guevara’s 1964 visit to the UN General Assembly where he delivered one of the most blistering anti-colonial speeches of the era. This sections feel large in scope while the Cuban scenes feel very intimate as Guevara trains guerrillas, engages in firefights with Batista’s troops and brings medical services to poor villages where many people had never seen a doctor before in their lives. Soderbergh captures everything with a great air of authenticity in the accents, settings, locations and anyone who has visited Cuba or the Caribbean will immediately recognize the unique sense of humor expressed by the characters. It is in this first half where we see Che taste victory as the Cuban Revolution spreads and culminates in the battle of Santa Clara. Batista falls and the experience convinces Che of the legitimacy of armed struggle. The second half of the film follows Che into Bolivia, a more arid landscape with an indigenous majority population living under another brutal regime. The Bolivia episode is the other side of the coin from the Cuban Revolution, here the struggle to spread a doctrine of armed revolution runs into various roadblocks due to many conditions including culture clashes, inter-clashes within leftist circles and the heavy involvement of the CIA in tracking down Che’s expedition. The Bolivia episode feels more fast-paced than Cuba, but also features a stunning attention to detail. The episode ends with Che’s execution at the hands of the Bolivian army and CIA, and in its somber tone, we can still see how the man transformed into legend.”Che” is first and foremost a document, an attempt by Soderbergh to chronicle in as much detail and realism as possible the EXPERIENCE of being a guerrilla in the field, the long hours of debate and boredom punctuated by moments of violence and danger. Like “The Battle Of Algiers” the film feels almost like a documentary instead of as a dramatic narrative. Those looking for a more romantic, adventurous trip should stick with Walter Salles’ excellent “The Motorcycle Diaries” about Guevara’s journey through Latin America as a young medical student. Soderbergh’s film is more challenging because it doesn’t provide easy answers or plot points, it forces the viewers to think for themselves and form their own opinions and conclusions. The film doesn’t make bold statements about the Cuban Revolution or socialist politics, and yet it forces the audience to ponder political theories and history more than the average, more straight forward biographical movie. “Che” provides a more challenging discussion about revolutionary politics than “Braveheart,” or Andy Garcia’s right-wing “The Lost City” which provided a more spoon-fed, almost tabloid take on the Cuban Revolution and its participants. Does this mean the film is simply too academic? It depends on what you’re looking for. Che Guevara is one of those historical characters that has become such an icon or symbol that many people wear the t-shirt without ever bothering to read anything about the man, this goes for both those who admire him and those who hate him. Even those who are just used to seeing Fidel Castro as an evening news item waving at crowds in his green fatigues will see the icon stripped down to a guerrilla commander trying to strategize and reconcile various parties, groups and opinions about how to carry out a revolutionary change in government. One value of the script by Peter Buchman is that he doesn’t reduce these men to just historical titans spewing grand speeches, we instead see the bare bones of politics and how behind the flashy posters and berets, Guevara and Castro were also debating the hows and whens of everything from land reform to foreign policy. The look of the film is toned down and yet very lush. Soderbergh used the Red One camera for both episodes of “Che” and the result is very impressive, a visual clarity with some of the same grain and depth as film. There are grand vistas in the Cuba chapter, with lush sequences in beautiful jungle terrains. The Bolivia section looks arid and cold, with rich shadows evoking a campaign headed for a tragic end. It was a wise choice to film the UN sequences in black and white film stock, they feel incredibly authentic.Without a doubt “Che” features the best performance ever delivered by Benicio Del Toro who fully embodies the character, the fact that he did not recieve an Oscar nomination is a complete travesty. He brilliantly changes looks, physique and switches from a man pumped with the idealism of a born rebel to a man struggling in a terrain that is not bending to his will. He never overplays Guevara and brings a real human dimension to a role which could so easily be overdone. Demian Bichir is impressive as Castro, masterfully capturing the famous accent, the mannerisms and yes, the cigar stance.”Che” is the kind of bold experiment many directors would be afraid of attempting. It breaks many rules and doesn’t bow to the demands of cheap commercialism, and yet is always fascinating. This isn’t the kind of movie to watch in order to avoid reading the biography, instead it is the kind of movie that might force you to go out and seek further reading on the man. Both sections come here with brilliant commentary tracks by journalist Jon Lee Anderson, author of the great biography “Che: A Revolutionary Life.” Anderson provides excellent analysis and historical information that adds to the fascination of the movie, for those who find it hard to grasp the movie at first, the commentary tracks are of great help. In the DVD extra features Soderbergh laments that maybe the time for a movie like “Che” has already passed because nobody actually DISCUSSES films anymore, people appear to simply seek escapism and nothing more. This is certainly not a film for “Avatar” fans, or at least for those who ONLY like movies in that vein, but for the curious with an eye for excruciating detail, “Che” is an experiment worth checking out.

3Man of the revolution
By E. A Solinas
Steven Soderbergh created one of those movies that is lucky to have been made at all — a four-hour-plus biopic of Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara. But like most biographical movies, it’s something of a mixed bag. Visually atmosphere and low-key in style, the two halves of “Che” focus on pivotal slices of Guevara’s life, with an amazing lead performance by Benicio Del Toro as the titular revolutionary. Unfortunately, it’s also a very slow-moving affair that brushes past some of the more unsavory facets of Che Guevara’s life and personality… and ironically many of the positive ones.Part 1: In the 1960s, Guevara (Benicio Del Toro) is in New York City for a UN conference, being interviewed by a US reporter about his viewpoints as a guerilla leader and revolutionary. Then the narrative jumps back a decade to when he and others (including Fidel Castro) consider the many injustices over in Cuba and start planning for a revolution. Despite being Argentinian by birth, Che follows them to Cuba and joins the guerilla revolution. But despite his start as a medic, Che began showing talents in other areas, and becomes a leader of the guerilla outlaws in the Cuban countryside. He grapples with his own ill health (asthma), the loss of his compatriots and the attacks from the military, which also threaten some of the non-revolutionaries — and as time goes on, their revolution gained power and notice, and began the ultimate battle for control of Cuba.Part 2: Later in life, Guevera comes to Bolivia disguised as a bespectacled bald businessman, with the intent of fighting another revolution in that country. But this revolution doesn’t go as well as the Cuban one (for Che): shortages in food, internal betrayal, and one of their contacts (Franka Potente) goofs up royally. As Guevera’s health deteriorates, the Bolivian army and the CIA take measures to quash his guerilla forces…Rather than the usual biographical movie format, Steven Soderbergh approaches “Che” as if he were filming a documentary. There are no scenes of little Che being kicked by a rich guy or melodramatic subplots — it’s quite literally a slice of the pivotal point of Che Guevara’s life, and a 1960s shakycam interview adds to that feeling. As an added note of authenticity, almost all of the dialogue is in Spanish rather than poorly-accented English, giving a you-are-there feel. The storyline is rather slow, speeding up gradually as the revolution really heats up… only to slow back down in the second half with Guevera’s decline. Most of the story is devoted to the guerillas staggering through the countryside, living in rough shacks and campsites. Even the landscapes reflect the ascent and descent of Guevera’s power — the first half is crammed with lush, vibrant jungle life, and the second is a washed-out, grey expanse of scrubby brush. Unfortunately, this means that over four hours, the story often drags like a ripped parachute. But despite the slowness, each movie climaxes with some revolutionary action. Pinging gunshots, explosions, tanks, tense chases through deserted streets and burning trains all play a part in the harrowing finales of each half, which are all the worst because you know that all this mayhem actually took place.Del Toro is, to put it mildly, astonishing as Guevara — not only is he a dead ringer physically (with the right facial hair and clothes), but he exudes a quiet charisma, literate intelligence and power that make you see exactly why someone might follow him if they agreed with his politics. No one else in the story really gets to stand out, but Del Toro simply IS the cast all by himself.Yet ironically it’s a piously bland, virtuous portrait of Guevera. Soderbergh wimps out on the cruel, extremist sides of his personality and the regime he helped create; on the other hand, he also brushes over the man’s fierce intellect, his writing, and world interests. It feels like we’re looking at one mirrored facet of a very complex man, and surely more of who he was — the good, the bad AND the ugly — could have been included. It’s obvious Soderbergh put a lot of heart into producing the raw, realistic “Che,” but his glorification and simplication of a controversial figure drags down his labor of love.

I thought this movie was fantastic. I’m not really into politics and don’t really have an opinion if Che was a good or bad person. As far as it being a movie- the story, directing, scenery, acting- this was done with the highest of quality. Non Hollywood-like which what matters to me.

5Why are we failing? How do we succeed?
By David
One of the most remarkable components of the film was the discussion of a proposal of Michelle Rhee — the Chancellor of the District of Columbia Public Schools system — to pay teachers in the district up to $140k based on merit, if tenure would be ended in the district. In the world capital of democracy, the teacher union leaders refused to let this proposal go to a union vote. This short story is nestled into the middle of the film but describes the flavor of the rest of the movie. “Waiting for ‘Superman’” is a shock and awe that delivers convincing arguments that good teachers are what matters to student learning but the U.S. school system cannot let shining stars shine or fire the bad apples, and the worse-off neighborhoods are hit the hardest. One of the major arguments of the film is that teacher tenure* has to go. It makes its case for each point with facts, figures, clear arguments, and examples. The film intensely wraps it all together with emotional connections to a half-dozen students followed through the film, each hoping to literally win the lottery and get a spot in a top charter school. The film isn’t all attack, and it shows several success stories in the form of top charter schools. Many of these schools have graduation rates of nearly 100%, and nearly all students go onto college. Interestingly, many of the charter schools take students who were already behind and from neighborhoods with schools that are classified as drop-out factories (where a minority of students graduate).”Waiting for ‘Superman’” examines the problems, and it shows what is possible.See this film. Understand the issues. Push for reform.- – -* Tenure started with professors at universities. However, professors are never guaranteed tenure when they start their positions, and it typically takes about ten years — “ten-ures” — before they earn it. Many never achieve it. Yet K-12 public school teachers who have been only teaching for three years at the same school can achieve tenure, and they don’t even have to go through a review to be granted tenure.

5We have to be our own Superman
By Robin
In Waiting for Superman, David Guggenheim’s riviting documentary about America’s school systems, he asks the question many parents have been asking. If our teachers are central to the performance of a school, how can we reconcile poor performance with an uncritical view of teachers? Are bad schools only in slums? Can children brought up in poverty excel in school?Waiting for Superman is not an attack on teachers. If anything its a testament to the critical importance of good teachers. Guggenheim’s research shows the amazing effect that good teaching can have on a very large population of students. But he also presents the corallary. Just as good teaching saves lives, bad teaching destroys them. And unfortunately Americans have allowed a system to develop where good teachers get no rewards and bad teachers are almost never fired. The problem is not necessarily spending. We have more than doubled our per student expenditures since the 1960s (even adjusting for inflation) and are turning out graduates who are not college ready.Guggenheim follows the history of American schools showing how up until the 1970s American public schools were the best in the world. He shows how the lack of global competition made us look awfully good. Unfortunately schools need to be better then they were fifty years ago, when they were expected to turn out high school classes where 20% of the kids went to college. Nowadays schools need to turn out graduating classes where just about everybody is ready for a four year college–and very few school districts are doing it. To make the story hit home, Guggenheim profiled several students waiting to get into Charter Schools, schools which are run by different rules than most public schools, and have a history of success. Watching these children observe the lottery that will determine whether they can attend, will break your heart. He also profiles Michelle Rhee, the take-no-prisoners Superintendent of the Washington, DC school system. As someone who lives right outside of DC, I have watched Rhee and applauded loudly as she has taken on every special interest that holds back education in Washington, DC. The movie showcases her wins in improving DC test scores. Unfortunately it misses the final chapter of Rhee’s career, the defeat of Mayor Adrian Fenty, who put his own career on the line, in the interest of the children of Washington, DC. Rhee’s future in DC is unknown but the incoming Democratic candidate for Mayor, who will run unopposed in November, supports many of the practices that Rhee fought. As Rhee sadly points out, much of this problem is adults not wanting to confront other adults.

2Misleading and wrought with omissions…
By Brandon Schultz
I recommend seeing this documentary for the stories and indelible images (the lottery at the end will stay with you), but I encourage viewers to keep in mind a few facts that the documentary either overlooks or mentions only briefly. It is these omissions that will allow most viewers to leave with two spurious conclusions:1) Public education everywhere is a failure, and 2) Charter schools are the answer.First, the documentary conspicuously ignores the issue of inequality created by our current public school funding scheme. Instead, the viewer is told about the major sources of funding (federal, state, and local), but it’s never mentioned that the vast majorority of funds come from state and local taxes, with property taxes being the principal determinant of how much is spent per pupil within a school district. The viewer is also told that, on average, we are spending twice as much per pupil than we were 30 or 40 years ago, after adjusting for inflation. What isn’t explained is that while the average expenditure has gone up, the range from lowest to highest expenditures has also increased. In other words, the current average is inflated by the fact that some school districts have plenty to spend, so much so that students are given laptops and the schools have pristine facilities. In the movie, viewers get a glimpse of one such school, but it is never explained how such schools can afford all the wonderful amenities and how these schools skew the average per pupil figures; Viewers are just told that some students struggle in those environments too, which of course some do. But when you have huge financial discrepancies between school districts, you also have huge discrepancies in teacher pay, textbook allotments, facilities upkeep, etc., etc. And while people loath to discuss the impact of financial inequities (echoes of “class warfare”), resources DO influence educational outcomes. It’s true that you can’t just throw money at the problem and expect everything to be magically fixed, but it’s also true that you can’t allow resources to be so unequally distributed and expect it to have no impact at all. Read Savage Inequalities: Children in America’s Schools for the back story.Second, the narrator only briefly mentions that 1 in 5 charter schools are exceptional. Well, guess what? That’s about the same rate of exceptional public schools! The research on charter schools suggests that charters are about as likely to succeed or fail as public schools (see Privatizing Education: Can The School Marketplace Deliver Freedom Of Choice, Efficiency, Equity, And Social Cohesion? for an overview of the research). What makes this so important is that in most cases, charters have a student selection process that almost guarantees high quality students, and once students enroll, most charters can expell problem students back to the regular public school. The documentary shows the lottery process by which many charter schools select their students. But which parents do you think enroll in the lottery? By and large, these are the proactive and involved parents who expect a lot from their children. So ask yourself: Who ISN’T in the lottery? Based on such selection and retention processes alone, we should expect charter schools to far outperform public schools, but they don’t. Sure, there are exceptional charter schools — some of which are spotlighted in the movie — but these anecdotal cases are NOT representative of larger trends. In fact, many charter schools fail in their first one or two years of operation and lose their charters. The documentary does not spend a single moment telling that side of the story.Having said all this, I largely agree with the documentary on the issue of teacher unions. Teacher unions represent a huge impediment to reform, and the unions protect the weakest teachers again and again. Any real effort to improve public education will have to include some shifting of power from the unions back to the school boards, but this shift will need to be done carefully. The documentary does a fantastic job showing the problem of tenure and how this has led to the artificially high rate of teacher retention. The unions have won tenure and pay raises based almost entirely on time in the classroom, rather than performance. Obviously this complicates reform, but there is additional context that the documentary ignores. For example, good teachers are often assigned the most difficult students. In such an environment, student test scores could actually make the best teachers appear incompetent, and the incompetent appear masterful. Again, this is just another instance where the documentary glosses over issues and allows the viewer to come away unfairly biased. We are led to believe that hamhanded “reformers” like Michelle Rhee are always right and the teacher unions are always wrong. In short, this documentary is worth watching, but don’t believe everything you see!!!

5Silent Hill – More Mystery Movie than Horror
By Gus
First with regard to Blu-Ray, I suspect the above reviewer was using an inferior television. The picture was sharp and superb almost to the point of distraction sometimes, but I suppose that’s the point of using Blu-Ray.As for the movie, when I saw it had Radha Mitchell (from Pitch Black) and Sean Bean I knew that this would not be a standard shocker, and I was not disappointed. The movie throws subtle clues about what’s going on to accumulate and fall together at the end for a touching and rewarding ‘wow’. This movie stuck with me through the night after I watched it and put all the pieces together neatly with appreciation for the writing as well as the directing and acting.I’m extremely pleased I waited for this movie to come out on blu-ray before I saw it, too.

5My faith in the horror genre’ was waning until…
By PohlSE
Silent Hill is a movie based on a video game.Still reading? Good, because you will be pleasantly surprised to learn that, unlike every other video game-based movie ever made, this is a great film! And it’s a great film that fans of the game can enjoy as well as moviegoers who never heard of the game (or who have been offended by the drek that usually comes to the theaters in the guise of video game movies).Silent Hill is a ghost town that was abandoned in the seventies because of an underground coal fire and now haunts the nightmares of a little girl. In an attempt to help her adoptive daughter Sharon (Jodelle Ferland), Rose (Radha Mitchell) takes her to Silent Hill and enters a nightmare-like alternate reality. Going any further into the plot would spoil the surprises in this film and the surprises are part of the fun.The creatures that inhabit this alternate Silent Hill are very disturbing and nightmarish and they move in a very fluid way that is both familiar and strange at the same time. Seeing them in action (and, unlike most horror films, in full lighting) causes an almost immediate flight or fight reaction until the rational side of your brain remembers that it’s only a movie. Also on the plus side is the music of Silent Hill. Very creepy, very fitting, and, very good; at least half of the reason this film works so well is because the music and sound effects do so well in conveying the sense that something is moving just beyond your vision. There is a downside to the film and it occurs almost dead center in the film. The beginning and ending of the movie is rife with psychological-based horror, and creatures dredged up from the depths of nightmares. But the middle is where we get an explanation for what’s going on and it’s a jarring change of pace that, thankfully, doesn’t last too long. But the rest of the film makes up for that one pacing stutter and the entire film comes together in a great conclusion that may or may not hint at a sequel.Silent Hill also accomplished two very important things; it proves that a video game can be successfully translated into a great film, and it restored my faith in the horror genre’ by giving me real chills without resorting to cheap tricks.A must see!

5differs from the rest
By Robert
I am a fan of the Silent Hill games.I read nothing but negative critics about this movie and I thought it might be a bad one… until I saw it. This one is an outstanding work. The story is unique and brilliant, as well as the acting, even the smallest parts are played by very talented actors. The director took care of all the details to make a perfect and scary movie about Silent Hill. Amazing. Can’t wait to get the R2 version.

5Great Film – DVD’s are the same.
By A Customer
What can i say about this film that hasn’t been said? …You already know that its a great film, wonderful directing and cast. Mark Wahlberg is exceptional and well Burt, well lets just say this is his best performance EVER. But you heard it before…blah, blah, blah.

Now for the DVD fan, this is important, if you already have the single disc release, there is no need to buy the double disc set, because they are the same, oh..but wait the single disc has more. Don’t be dooped by New Line’s marketing strategies. You get the same extra features, but on 2 discs instead of one and a nifty new packaging, which is what you are paying for. In fact the single disc release has one extra feature that the 2 disc set doesn’t, the “song jump” feature, which alows you to skip to selected songs throughout the film.

5Too long, too drawn out, too weird…can I have some more?
By Mike Freed
“Boogie Nights” is one of those movies that defies categorization. It’s about the porno industry, and has its fair share of sexual content, but never titillates. It’s often funny but the humor is usually of the dark variety. Much of the content shouldn’t be entertaining, but the movie succeeds grandly as entertainment.

It’s the oblique nature of “Boogie Nights” that makes it so special. It’s not a film that will give you pat answers; rather, it’ll challenge you in a way few films do. What other movie in recent memory was able to take an explicit sex scene and make it sexually unexciting? “Boogie Nights” has just such a scene, and it serves one purpose: to de-glamorize the world of porno and portray it for what it doubtless is: a business where people do nothing but try to make a living.

“Boogie Nights” centers around the life and times (the late 1970′s and early 1980′s) of Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg, who’s dynamite), who is discovered by porno impresario Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds, in another dynamite performance) and soon changes his name to Dirk Diggler and becomes a porno star.

Dirk’s story is intertwined with the stories of others who share his world: coked-up porn queen Amber Waves (Julianne Moore), who plays surrogate mother to Dirk because she is legally barred from seeing her own child; Reed Rothschild (John C. Reilly), his best buddy and co-star; Rollergirl (Heather Graham), a porn performer who insists on “acting” with her rollerskates on; Buck Swope (Don Cheadle), a black porn bit player who dresses like Gene Autry and dreams of owning a stereo store; and Little Bill (William H. Macy), Horner’s quietly enraged right hand man, whose wife literally does it with everyone and anyone and doesn’t care if her husband sees her doing it.

Director Paul Thomas Anderson tells the characters’ stories vignette-style, much as Robert Altman would.

In particular, Dirk’s rags-to-riches-to-rags-to-riches story is alternately funny, horrifying, sad and uplifting. In particular, there is a scene in which a strung-out Dirk tries to make a drug deal with a crackhead dealer. Problem is, the cocaine he’s trying to sell is fake, the dealer’s house is full of armed thugs, and his friend keeps lighting firecrackers as the whacked-out dealer listens to Night Ranger’s “Sister Christian”. Anderson directs this scene so beautifully that the tension and fear is absolutely unbearable after a while, but the whole setup is so bizarre that you can’t help but smirk your way through it. That’s great directing, folks.

The performances are all standouts, but Reynolds’ and Moore’s are especially fine. In addition, the period feel (down to the Cheryl Tiegs poster on Dirk’s bedroom wall) and music is right on target.

This is a brilliant film, and though it’s too in love with its own brilliance from time to time, the flaws are greatly outweighed by the film’s tremendous energy and superb performances.

4Boogie Nights-The return of Dirk
By Paul
This Platinum series is a noticeable improvement over the last release. Paul Anderson, the director, says this is the “definitve version” of Boogie Nights. While I agree with him in many ways, I STILL had the need for MORE supplemental material. The packaging is really nice. It opens like a book, revealing 2 attractive discs, one with the film, the other with supplemental material. Trying to release these discs with your fingers may be the hardest thing you ever did. They are VERY difficult to release from the case. This edition does not come with a booklet, but gives you plenty to read on the inner sleeves. Once you pop the DVD’s into your player, you’ll see that the menu’s are simple and very easy to navigate. You can set-up your monitor with a simple ‘color bars’ set-up. The picture quality is beautiful. Color saturation is noticeably improved over the previous release, and overall the widescreen image is attractive and clean. The sound is also greatly improved over the previous release. It is cleaner and more vibrant and the stereo separation seems to be much more precise. The music sounds incredible and the vocals are clear and sharp. The firecracker scene at the drug dealers house sounds wonderful! The audio commentary is reason enough to get this DVD. Paul Anderson has almost every person you’d ever want to listen to on this DVD. They are all talking in their own vulgar and natural ways throughout the film, and most of the time, it is quite amusing and informative. This version has an additional few minutes of a deleted scene that is great to watch including Becky, Jerome and a car crash with Mark Whalberg driving! John C. Reilly is a really funny guy, and his scenes in this DVD, (The John C. Reilly Files), are a pleasure to watch. The DVD also includes the “Try” video, a nice little addition. In conclusion, I love this film, and anyone else who does should get this DVD. I recommend it highly, I just really wanted to see more supplemental footage, (probably because I love this film so much). Besides that, this DVD is excellent, great picture and wonderful sound, and the supplemental footage is incredibly entertaining. **By the way, go to the ‘color bars’ and let it play for about 30 seconds….something shocking will appear on your screen** Enjoy this DVD!

5Funniest Movie I’ve Seen in Ages
By V. K. Lin
First saw this at the Eugene DisOrient Asian Film Festival over a year ago. Funniest movie I’ve seen in ages. Minimal spoilers below…This is the story of a younger son in a Chinese-American family who is struggling with his identity and his cultural responsibility. His elder brother is a ping pong champion, and the entire family’s finances are contingent on the reputation of the family and their performance at a local ping pong tournament. You can figure out the rest from there. But this charming, hilarious, incredibly well-thought out movie by relative movie unknowns has more class, humor, and intelligence than most mainstream Hollywood comedies I’ve seen. The vast majority of the humor is applicable to all races, all cultures, all walks of life… there are a few jokes and intimations specific to the Asian-American community… but I loved this movie so much I pre-ordered the DVD, feeling grateful that it actually made it out of it’s film festival beginnings (into limited more mainstream release, but not where I live), onto DVD.It’s based on the classic athletic competition motif. The oppressive, aggressive professional athlete coming to take over small local town ping pong hero. Family obligation. Cultural expectations. Identity/social self-exploration/finding. Touching characters with some depth. The humor is classy, clever, witty. It is not very subtle, just outright fun. Language is pretty clean for a comedy, but still has quite a bit of profanity (teenage locker room talk) that is partially obscured by the sound of a bouncing ball or ping pong paddle hit or similar as a sort of tongue-in-cheek (ha, that’s a pun!) censor. Depending on your sensitivity to this sort of thing, appropriate for teens (13-14+), but prepare to cover the ears of your child if younger. Subject material is otherwise pretty clean, and appropriate for even younger than teenaged kids. It’s a great film, IMO.-vk

This movie, starring Jimmy Tsai, is funny and uplifting. It is a unique film that not only I enjoyed, but my children also found it to be an awesome movie! Buy it on DVD, it’s great to watch over and over.

4Pretty good, pretty funny
By Grill Master
This movie was just about what I was thinking it would be. It was funny throughout but not just hilarious. There is a good bit of profanity along with f-bombs that are presented as “f(sound of a ping-pong ball hiting a hard surface)k”. So I don’t know if it is for younger kids. Many of the profanities are hidden but not completely. The story is good and kept me interested. There is a lot of humor though I don’t think it is most people’s type of humor and I felt like there were some aspects I didn’t think were funny but felt like it was intended to be funny.I will probably watch it again sometime. There’s a lot of ping-pong in the movie.

4The cinematic equivalent of a hot fudge sundae.
By Miles D. Moore
Nancy Meyers’ “The Holiday” has been seriously dissed by most of America’s film critics–including one who suggested that any man who goes to see it should be forced to pay with a crucial part of his anatomy instead of money. “The Holiday” is indeed a prime example of what is condecendingly known as a “chick flick,” and it’s not a movie you can make great claims for. But “The Holiday” succeeds outstandingly in living up to its title; it provides an audience with a two-hour vacation filled with charming, likable actors playing charming, likable characters. The movie is set during the Christmas holidays in which two women with man problems–Iris (Kate Winslet), an English journalist, and Amanda (Cameron Diaz), an L.A. producer of film trailers–meet over the Internet. On a whim, they decide to switch houses for Christmas; Amanda ends up in Iris’s picture-postcard-pretty cottage in Surrey, Iris in Amanda’s luxurious, gated mansion in Beverly Hills. There, they discover new romantic complications: Amanda with Iris’s brother Graham (Jude Law) and Iris with a film composer named Miles (Jack Black). There’s also a subplot about the friendship that develops between Iris and an elderly screenwriter played by the venerable Eli Wallach. Nothing that happens in the movie is at all original or consequential. I could even quibble about an inaccuracy or two in Meyers’ screenplay (Cary Grant was from Bristol in Gloucestershire, not Surrey). But seeing “The Holiday” makes you feel happy and light of heart, which is all it sets out to do. While the film’s appeal is necessarily greater for women, I also think most men will find this a more-than-serviceable date movie. Sometimes you want a movie that’s rich, gooey and sweet, that contains no sharp edges and requires no sharp utensils for its consumption. In an increasingly abrasive world, the need for cinematic confections is greater than ever, and “The Holiday” fills that bill.

5Nancy Meyers’ best film to date!
By Alan Draven
Two women. Two failed relationships. Two houses. One great romantic comedy. The Holiday is the story of two women, Iris (Kate Winslet in a poignant performance) and Amanda (Cameron Diaz), who swap houses for two weeks thinking it will help them get over their relationship problems. Amanda will take Iris’s house in a small cottage just outside of London, and Iris will stay at Amanda’s house in L.A. They will both meet someone who will help them mend their heart.Let’s get one thing out of the way: Yes, this is a chick flick, but a damn fine one at that! I’m not much of a fan of the genre, nor of Nancy Meyers’ films, but when I saw this in theatres with my girlfriend last December, I loved it. I thought the film would’ve lost some of its charm on second viewing, but it hasn’t lost one bit of it. With a running time of 136 minutes, you’d think it would drag but it feels like a 90-minute film. The film has a few surprises and most of all, a great subplot around Arthur’s (screen veteran Eli Wallach in a brilliant performance) character. The film goes back and forth between the two relationships, the one in the UK and the one in the US, which gives it a great rhythm. Nothing seems forced and it doesn’t fall into the typical clichés of the genre. The dialogue is very well written, kudos to Meyers for that. The characters are interesting; Winslet (my favorite actress) shines in her role as Iris, the girl who falls for the wrong man. I usually avoid movies starring Cameron Diaz and/or Jack Black like the plague, but they were both really good in that one. Jude Law brought some class to his role. The supporting cast was very good (keep your eyes open for a cameo by a famous actor in the video store).Overall, The Holiday is a very enjoyable film and you don’t have to love romantic comedies to enjoy it. It’s closer to Something’s Gotta Give than What Women Want, and it’s much better this way. Check it out, you won’t be sorry!

5The First Romantic Comedy Masterpiece of the 2000s
By Marc Cabir Davis
I don’t think this decade has had much success with romantic comedies, but trust me that with “The Holiday”, the 2000s have never looked better. I consider this film to be one that extracts the finest performances from Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz EVER, and once you see it, you will know what I mean.Kate Winslet has acted in many good movies (“Hideous Kinky”, “Holy Smoke”, “Iris”) but its ironic that her most poignant and well-written role comes in “The Holiday”. You probably know the story already – its about two women on two different continents who swap houses and lives after a chance meeting on the Internet – but the treatment and above all, the DIALOGUE, is what drives this romantic comedy to the heights of that most rare animal – a cinema classic. And thats what “The Holiday” is. I honestly think that a genuine, feel-good film such as this should be embraced by the Oscar group, instead of their focus on typical epic films such as “Babel” and “Gladiator”. This is where the magic is. Cameron Diaz especially, has never found a better vehicle for her goofy charm (yes, this is even better – staggeringly better than “There’s Something About Mary”). Jude Law, who has had his share of incredible dramatic performances in films such as “Wilde” and “Alfie”, uses his effortless charm and natural screen presence to radiate such magnetism, that he is undeniably the most spot-on best romantic lead you would have seen for a while.Audiences I saw this with claimed that “The Holiday” was at least twice as better than “Pretty Woman”. No comparison. The films I consider really good romantic comedies would be “Never Been Kissed”, “A Life Less Ordinary” and “Theres Something About Mary”. However, “The Holiday” is all that, but the amazing thing is that it has a heart of gold and does NOT rely upon slapstick humor to make the dialogue and situations work.Kate Winslets’ character in fact, is one worth coming back to and studying, even from a film students’ perspective. She infuses her role with so much wit and warmth, that we do not mind if this girl even ends up single in the movie – we just want her to find herself. The scene where she dumps her boyfriend after three years of emotional abuse is absolutely wondrous – the actress glows and gives off such electric spark that its impossible not to FEEL for this beautiful character.Jack Black, in a superb cinematic role as a Hollywood music industry biggie, is never meant to be taken seriously as a love interest for Kate, much as some would like to think so. Their sad tale is of two people in two different bad relationships finding a friend again – I loved how the end of this movie did not strive to hurriedly bring two people together – rather, it allows space for the characters to breathe and live their emotions, which is why its so easy to take this film seriously, and which is why you MUST watch it.Finally a film worth buying! I have waited so long for a movie of such depth, grace and respect for the art of film-making.There are so many amazing scenes here – Kate in her quaint cottage trying to commit suicide (a poignant moment filled with humor and grief all at the same time), Kate waking up in the lap of luxury in Los Angeles, the initial meeting between Cameron and Jude and their wondrous chemistry, the moment where they realize they are in love with each other, the moment where Cameron meets Jude’s kids, and her ultimate realization that her selfish, unloving persona has been undone by this mans’ love – and the scene where she leaves it all behind to run back to the person she loves the most. There are SO many such moments during this movie. Consider this a return to form for Hollywood in general.I would especially like to thank the makers of “The Holiday”. I don’t know if any of them read Amazon reviews, but as a critic of film, I find it so hard to like so many of the “serious” films out there today. Most of them are made to win Oscars, and then there are those tailormade to win Academy Awards. Either way, they’re made to win something. And then you have the disposable comedies of the “Scary Movie” variety. But a film such as this makes me realize that the glory days of the 1950s and 60s of Hollywood still exist.I must also state here that I only saw this film because I saw that it starred Kate Winslet. This is one actress that has never let me down throughout her amazing career – and to find that she gave her best ever performance in this film made me all the more happier. She takes a beaten down, funnily written character and transforms her into a woman of great intelligence and feeling – this is NOT Bridget Jones’ Diary!Which is why its obvious why these stars signed up for a movie such as this. On the face of it, “The Holiday” is a two-story arc that converges into one in the end – about the love lives of two very different women. But it is so much more than that – in fact, it is a meditation on love and hope in this day and age.If my praise seems extravagant, all I can say is, buy this. Do not rent it, buy it. It is the pinnacle of working excellence for all three major stars – Jude, Kate and Cameron, and it is by far the best romantic comedy of the 2000s by a long shot. Also, I find it hard to believe that anything more amazing than this would be released anytime this year.Highly Recommended. Five Stars. Hollywood finally redeems itself and gets it right.

416 and pregnant season 3
By pooks
If you like season 1/2, season 3 is in exactly the same format. Can get a little predictable (you feel like the same person is writing the voiceovers), but the intesity, drama and emotion that comes from having to deal with life’s most difficult decisions before one is mature is real. Particularly interesting episodes are Jordan (a twin) and Kayla (anorexic)

5Finally…
By Grant Ferley
SG-1 is crazy good, and Season 2 was arguably the best season so far. As with many TV adaptations, the sophomore year is when a series tends to truly expand its horizons from the original, and this is certainly true with Stargate SG-1. Season Two lays the groundwork for many of the key storylines of the series, so it is a must for any viewer. I’ve been awaiting this since the first box set, especially with the Region 2 DVD’s being up to Season Four.

I cannot stress to anyone enough who has not watched the TV series that it is superb. If you would have asked me over a year ago about SG-1, I would have dismissed it easily as a cheesy Made-In-Canada (don’t fret, I’m Canadian) Sci-Fi series. True, a lot of that would have been from my bias from the movie, and that it starred Patty and Selma’s hero MacGyver ;-) , but after only seeing a few shows, I became quickly hooked. I was blown away by the unbelievable chemistry of the cast, the great story writing, and the quality of the special effects. We truly need more advocates for the series, as good TV is often hard to find. I’m about to preorder my copy now…

5A must have for all Stargate fans
By A Customer
Although it has taken a long time for them to be released, these DVD’s have definitely been worth the wait. Stargate SG-1 is one of the best sci-fi shows that has been around in years, taking an original and interesting premise (originally introduced in the Stargate movie, although expanded and changed a little) and weaving it into a detailed and complex storyline that continues to entertain. The second season sees Stargate SG-1 really come into it’s own, finding it’s feet after a mostly hit-and-miss first year. Among other things, we see the introduction of some new characters (both good and bad) this season, which adds a whole new dimension to the show and sets up some brilliant story arcs. The mythology behind the Stargate is explored a little deeper as well, allowing for some interesting discoveries and character development.Featuring such memorable episodes as The Serpent’s Lair, A Matter Of Time, Holiday, 1969 and The Fifth Race, this is a collection that I will be re-watching and enjoying for a long time to come.

4A very happy day for SG-1 fans in the states!
By Danny
Stargate SG-1 is one of the best sci-fi series ever created, perhaps even one of the best TV series *Period*. Yes I know it’s a bold statement, but it has merit. Season 2 is where the series really starts to take off, and lay ground work for some of the series key storylines. (Thor’s Chariot, The Tok’ra, The Fifth Race, etc.) Argueably one of the best seasons, Season 2 packs a startling number of high quality episodes into one short 22 episode season.

Quality: 4 Almost all of the episodes are high quality, must see episodes, and those that are not are at the very least decent.

Video: 3 1/2 Picture quality is great, Wide Screen, very little distortion.

Sound: 4 Boasting Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound, these DVDs sound great. Crisp and life-like, the sound is superb.

Packaging: 5 The Box Set comes with a very attractive and useable case, each DVD is seperatly boxed with all of the information you need on the episodes, and more.

Special Features: 3 Perhaps the DVD’s biggest weakness, is lack of special features. If Special features are what your in it for, this may not be the box set for you. All DVDs come with Promotional trailers, and 3 of 5 DVDs come with a special featurette on a cast member or Producer.

Overall: A Solid 4 Lack of Special features keep this Box set from getting a perfect 5, other than that this set is very very good, and I reccomend it to ANY SG-1 fan, new or veteran to the series.

I can’t wait for season 3!!
