Great show!

I was unable to find this show in many places, so I got it on Amazon.This is a really heart-warming series, mixing fast remodels with emotional back-stories.I’ve seen all of the 1st season, and like them all. Starz Academy one is my favorite.

Enjoyable, but the recipients not always worthy

We never learn how or why the lucky beneficiaries are chosen for this show to have their failing businesses rebuilt in 4 days by this crew. Honestly, most of them seem like losers who don’t deserve it. Clearly, they don’t know how to run their businesses very well or they would not need all this help. Who pays for everything? We never learn that, either. I guess Discovery Channel? Who knows? The father and son of the Staten Island nightlcub, for example, obviously are clueless. Since the show aired, the club, Locale, has closed. Big surprise. They didn’t know what they were doing before they received this huge bailout, and they still didn’t know after. I liked the main character’s constant yelling at his crew. He’s pretty funny. The New York accents are thick.

Ignore the haters, Season Five is one of the series’ best. While nothing will touch the freshman year of Seasons One and Two, Season Five benefits from a welcome change of scenery. Capeside was getting tired by the end of Season Three, and Four seemed like the same old conflicts reiterated again. The series needed to breathe, and it found new wind in sending Dawson off to California and the rest of the clan off to Boston.Throwing the characters into the new realm of post-secondary adds freshness to the series, as the gang is able to experience new and more age-oriented conflicts, like fraternity angst, career-path uncertainty and the perils of being away from home. The series would even stretch itself creatively with the new location change, with an interesting two-parter with Joey and a life-changing situation.Not only is the change of scenery rife with interesting new experiences, but the actual subject matter of Season Five has much more dramatic weight than the comparatively lackluster Season Four. Dawson does some real soul searching, Pacey copes with the hardships of being a failure, and there is a death with an emotional impact that makes Abby Morgan’s farewell in Season Two seems like small stuff.We also get a new regular, Audrey, “Freaks and Geeks” breakout Busy Phillips, and she adds a feistiness to the series that had been lost after Abby’s departure in Season Two. While Audrey’s character would become a writing snafu in Season Six (constantly reiterating the same old tired drug/alcohol abuse story), her, Joey and Pacey have some really strong moments in this season. Jack’s homosexuality is treated much more comfortably here than it was in any other season, and Jen is surprisingly loveable in Season Five, which is nice considering how grating she was becoming with all her angst throughout Seasons Two to Four.All the characters really do grow in this season, and some of the entire series’ best moments can be found within. Joey’s sing-song at the bar is a celebration of her newfound individuality apart from Dawson or Pacey, the funeral service for the death victim and a tender moment between Dawson and Jen after nearly breaking up all rank up there in emotional impact with the Season One finale.Those who badmouth Season Five are mostly, from what I can gather, Joshua Jackson lovers who just can’t get past the fact that the series is called “Dawson’s Creek” and not “Pacey and Joey’s Creek”. Pacey and Joey share some wonderful moments in Seasons Three, Four and Six, but it is nice that they get a breather in Five. Those looking for the Pacey-Joey drama of previous seasons will be stubbornly disappointed, but those looking for a fresh return to the essence of the show will no doubt appreciate Season Five. It is easily the most underappreciated season in the series, and hopefully this DVD release will allow fans to revisit and reappraise this great season. Enjoy it while you can, because Season Six is a rough ride…Fans should know a couple things about this 5th Season DVD release. Firstly, the music is again changed, including the Paula Cole theme song. While this has been common practice for the last couple seasons, this one takes it a step further. In the funeral episode, which in the series’ original run was the only episode to have entirely different music and credits, has instead been replaced with the Jann Arden opening. The original opening for this episode had a beautifully somber instrumental version of Paula Cole’s theme song (performed by Adam Fields) that was set to images of a cloudy Capeside. It was beautiful, but on this release it is no longer. A real shame.Secondly, the other big change on this release compared to the previous ones is the total lack of extras. The Paul Stupin commentaries that we have all anticipated and loved each year have now been discontinued. No trivia games, Capeside map, behind-the-scenes interviews, nothing. Considering Season 5 was such a big change for the series, you’d think they would have had Paul come in and dish out on his creation. He even spoke of his excitement to do so on the commentary for Season 4. Alas, we get a couple previews for other shows on disc one, and the rest of the three discs are completely empty. Season 5 is a great enough season to warrent purchase on its own, but the lack of extras is a real slap in the face to fans who have stuck by this series so long on both TV and now DVD. Given that it is Sony I can’t say that I am all that surprised, but I hope they rectify their mistakes for the final season. Please, Sony, bring the commentaries back!

One of the biggest reasons I enjoy television so much is because it allows me to escape the incredible boredom that passes for my life, and for a little while anyway, take in somebody else’s problems and live in their lives.This is certainly the case with Dawson’s Creek. I never watched the show when it was on the air until the last few episodes, but I have enjoyed the first four DVD sets and was interested to see how the show changed once the kids left Capeside for college.As season five begins, we find Dawson at film school in California, Joey at Worthington College in Boston and Jack and Jen close by at Boston Bay College. Pacey, fresh off his summer working on a yacht, is living in a boat in Boston Harbor and as the season begins, only Jen knows he is there.Things change quickly for everyone as the season gets under way. Dawson realizes that he misses being with Joey and decides he wants to move to Boston to be near her. But the sudden death of his father changes everything, pushing him away from Joey and eventually into a relationship with Jen. Jack quickly joins a fraternity and his brothers soon begin to take priority over school and his high school friends. Pacey realizes that he has a talent for cooking when he gets a job in a restaurant and Joey finds herself attracted to her professor.James Van Der Beek is again solid as Dawson, though you have a hard time, as in years past, believing that he is the age that he is. The dialogue throughout the series has always been over the top, which is really what makes the show what it is. His emotion at the death of his father, and his need to be there for his mother is heart wrenching at times. He finally confronts his feelings by going to a therapist to sort out his feelings. It is these emotions that lead him to his relationship with Jen, one that ends before the season concludes, but brings back memories for viewers from the original season of the show.Michelle Williams as Jen really sees a variety of different roles throughout the season. You see her as the girlfriend to Dawson, but as the relationship slowly begins to fade, you see her trying not to hurt his feelings, yet still keep herself somewhat sane. Her friendship with Jack goes from hot to cold to back to hot again and at the end of the season, she is off to spend the summer with her parents.As Jack, Kerr Smith is again a strong member of the cast. He confronts a lot of emotions when he joins a fraternity and finds out that he is simply being used to fill a quota. Eventually the fact that he is gay leads him to leave the fraternity. While he is there however, he takes to drinking way too much, and falls behind in his schoolwork and also becomes estranged from Jen for a period of time, a relationship that heals by the season’s end.Joshua Jackson’s Pacey is the one character of the group that is not in college, but he is living nearby in a friend’s boat as the season begins. Eventually he takes a job at a restaurant and finds out that he has a real talent for it and is put in charge of the kitchen when his boss leaves. He also begins a relationship with Audrey (Busy Phillips), Joey’s college roomate, a relationship that reminds one of the relationship he had with Joey, something that really makes him happy.Of course Katie Holmes as Joey Potter was one of the most beautiful women on television at the time and in this season, you get to see her as a college freshman. Her almost affair with a professor and her attraction to a guy who cheated on Jen show a different side to Joey Potter than most people are used to after four years of getting to know her. Perhaps her best episode of the series was the one where she was mugged and helped the mugger after he was hit by a car. This episode featured just this story line and was very powerful.Busy Phillips, as Audrey, guest starred in almost every episode and was added as a series regular in t he final season. Mary Beth Piel’s Grams is still a cast regular, as she moves to Boston and houses Jen, Jack and eventually Dawson. She really is a fantastic character, one that provides that motherly advice that young people always need. Mary Margaret Humes, a cast regular for the first four years, appears sporadically as Dawson’s mom Gail. John Wesley Shipp also appears in a few episodes as Mitch Leery, before he dies in a car crash. The third former cast regular Nina Repeta, appears in a few episodes as Joey’s sister Bessie.Of course there is the guest star appearances of a couple of people from other shows. Chad Michael Murray is now the star of One Tree Hill. Sherrilyn Fenn was on a number of shows, including Twin Peaks. Phillips was on Freaks and Geeks.This set could have easily been rated five stars from this reviewer, but there were no extras at all. Each of the other four sets has at least a commentary track or two for the fans, but this set featured nothing, which was disappointing. Also, the theme song is again replaced, which is what viewers have come to expect over the last few seasons. It would be nice if they brought back Paula Cole for season six, but I kind of doubt it will happen.

I know there are many disappointed fans out there when it comes to the decline of momentum in the fifth season, but I really loved this season. We have already seen all of Capeside and its inhabitants at this point. We already know the in depth history of each and every one of the main characters. We have already seen the same people thrown into the same situations again and again (Not saying that I didn’t love every minute of it). It is just nice to see how they react to a new environment and new people. Also, the fifth season has some of the most heartbreaking storylines of the entire series, including the episode where Mitch dies and the one where Joey gets mugged. For anyone questioning whether or not to buy the disc set, let me just tell you that the previous four were well worth it for me. I do have to say that I was a bit disappointed by the change in music. I understand why certain songs had to be changed, but it just isn’t quite the same when you see the opening credits come on and you don’t hear “I don’t want to wait” by Paula Cole along with it. I would certainly pay a little more for the set if it had at least that one song included.

Okay, I know this is going to be a highly disputed opinion, but I think this movie is very, very good. Great, I’d even daresay. And I am a Godzilla fan. I love the Big Guy from his early masterworks to his campy mid-period to his new thrilling outings.Admittedly, this is not the same Godzilla. But Godzilla himself is a product of the 50s fascination with giant monsters, and this movie is really just an homage to all those old, great monster movies. Anyway, I don’t see why the universe isn’t big enough for two Godzillas.A lot of fans hated this just for the idea. But Tristar had to make a new version. The old version would’ve flopped in America. In fact, Godzilla 2000 came out about a year later, and it did terrible. So where were those so-called fans when he really needed them? I submit that there really aren’t that many Godzilla fans. There’s plenty of people who claim to be, but do they really like him or these types of films? Doesn’t seem like it.Onto the movie. First there’s Godzilla. He’s a terrific special effect. Some people say he doesn’t look real. He looks pretty darn impressive to me. Realism is a rather silly complaint when you’re talking about a giant lizard running through New York.The story is deceptively simple. You could boil it down to Army vs. Monster, but there’s a creativity here that gets overlooked. The characters (all of whom are well-developed especially considering none are the real star) are all likable. Their motivations are believable. And their story arcs are solidly connected to the central conflict in a way that doesn’t seem forced.The action sequences are wonderful. I like to think of them as monstrous versions of great kung fu showdowns. Godzilla isn’t invulnerable in this film, and so when he fights helicopters, rockets, and submarines, I actually felt suspense, even though I knew he wasn’t going down until the end of the movie.The plot of Godzilla’s young gives a nice excuse for some human-scaled action. The pacing is expertly handled. At two hours, there’s still a lot crammed in here. The acting is good. Jean Reno’s French military agent is beautifully understated. And the final end of Godzilla is both tragic and satisfying.I don’t love the last little bit, but to me it’s not so much an advertisement for a sequel as a wink to those “THE END?” titles at the end of those great old movies.Boy, this is a long review. I guess I’m just trying to make a case for this underrated and much-maligned film. Personally, I think the original Big Guy would love it. Although I’m sure his version would end a little different.

Zilla’s Blu ray Review.

The 1080p Video:’Godzilla’s 1080p MPEG-4 AVC transfer, in its original 2.39: 1 aspect ratio, is actually fairly solid. This isn’t the knock-it-out-of-the-park home video presentation some might be expecting, but it’s a perfectly fine transfer in its own right. (Especially of a movie I have no intention of ever, ever, EVER watching again.)The movie is drenched in persistent rain, which adds a blurry, oppressive look to the entire film. While there is a fair amount of grain on the transfer (more than you’d expect for a relatively recent film), sometimes it became unclear whether or not the image was muddled or grainy or if it was just the added element of rain.That said, other aspects of the transfer fare better. There are no wonky technical issues, skin tones look good, detail is heightened, and blacks are deep and dark.The only other major problem has nothing to do with the crispness of the image, but rather the newly presented high definition presentation, in which the visual effects (of which there are many) look even lousier. Watch those baby Godzillas bouncing around Madison Square Garden and you’ll wish Ray Harryhausen had slapped the filmmakers.Now The Audio:On the other hand, the lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track is truly impressive. Literally from the opening frame, when the dirigible in the logo for Emmerich and Devlin’s Centropolis Films production shingle flies through your living room, you’ll know you’re in for a treat.This is one of those kick-ass mixes where, if you turn it up all the way, you’ll probably get complaints from the neighbors, while at the same time there’s enough nuance, subtlety and directionality of the mix that you’ll actually be impressed, and not just for its sofa-shaking prowess.Literally, the action sequences spring violently to life. Rubble cascades from buildings, suspension bridges snap and sway, and Godzilla lets out his piercing roar with such lifelike force that you’ll wonder if the dinosaur-ish creature is in your home. There’s always so much going on, with an emphasis on bowel-rattling bass that you’ll wonder if you can take it all. You do, because it’s that good.That said, every effect is crisp and clear, the atmospherics (like that persistent rain) remain admirable and in the few sequences with dialogue, that too is crisp, clear and also well prioritized, even when competing with the on-screen mayhem. David Arnold’s fantastic score, which is often overlooked, also sounds spectacular.This mix really is reference-quality and was almost enough for me to watch the movie again. I said almost.Also included are mixes in French DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1, Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1, Portuguese DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 with subtitles in English, English SDH, French, Portuguese, and Spanish.The Bottom Line is,I might just only go see this movie for it’s crisp audio track.Video: 4/5Audio: 5/5Movie: 2/5

I actually enjoyed this movie quite a bit. 2 key things is to (1) forget about the original Godzilla which this is not and understandably has upset Godzilla fans – think of this as something entirely separate (2) view this movie in Dolby Digital Surround Sound. Its Amazing and significantly enhances the film. When seen in this light the movie is a lot of fun, with good acting killer special effects.

You need to know before going into this movie that this is NOT a movie for kids. It was strange watching it at first (how often do you see a dead body in an animated film in the first scene?), but once you get past the fact that this is an animated film for ADULTS, it’s a very good movie.~SPOILER ALERT~For those of you who don’t understand the movie, you weren’t paying much attention. There were visual cues throughout as to where the machines come from (the BRAIN creates them) and also for where the characters 1-9 get their soul/s (they each get a *piece* of the scientist’s soul). 9 gets the last piece of the scientist’s soul, which is why the scientist died. Each character epitomizes various aspects of humanity: fear, survival, strength, courage, endurance, memory, self-sacrifice, etc.The movie is rich with allusions and symbols that are drawn from human tendencies and survival instincts. I think it’s one of those movies that you can watch over and over and find different meanings each time (if you’re open to it). You could even go so far as to argue that the movie is religious in a way. The scientist gave his life to save humanity/life on earth. You could also say that the souls who are taken by the BRAIN are in a state similar to Limbo.Also, one of the rag dolls is a female; what could be said about the fact that her soul came from a male scientist? Etc.Very thought provoking and conversation starting movie. I loved every minute of it, and will watch it again.

Tim Burton has once again proven his subtle twisted genius as a storyteller. Like many, I saw previews for 9 in the movie theatre but missed seeing it on the big screen. I read the other reviews before renting this film & 2 out of the 3 rightfully praised the animation but sadly all 3 misunderstood the story. I hate spoilers but I feel it necessary to share a bit regarding the plot in hopes to inspire others to discover this wonderful film.The 9 refer to 9 elements of the human soul which the Inventor never placed in his original creation and which were the only hope for a second chance for life on the planet. One reviewer mentioned that they were left with questions such as why are the 9 beings the only hope for humans when no humans were left on the planet. The answer is in the rain, which that reviewer must have missed. Rain/Water is a symbol of life universally.Too often modern writers and directors spoon feed audiences everything so that it seems more and more modern audiences are hard pressed to add their own imagination/understanding to the story. Tim Burton has done a magnificent job of weaving ancient folk lore into a magical tale. I highly recommend this film to individuals & families alike. It is completely worth it!

“9″ is an animated film based on the 2005 Academy Award nominated short film of the same name (which is included on the DVD). The film is the work of animator Shane Acker and was co-produced by Tim Burton, who got involved with the project after seeing Acker’s short film. Although Burton did not write or direct “9,” the film is very consistent with his past animated work such as “Corpse Bride.” Set in a post-apocalyptic world, the movie focuses on a rag doll robot (!) named 9 who suddenly becomes sentient. As he explores his world, he discovers that the only other inhabitants are other, similarly numbered rag doll robots as well as a strange cat-like machine who hunts them. He befriends the other robots and changes their world drastically.The world created in this film is fascinating and unlike any other animated film I’ve seen. I particularly loved the use of contrasts, including having the robots made of burlap and other unexpected materials (Acker has referred to the bots as “stitchpunks”). The “look” of “9″ is by far its main draw, though, because unfortunately the plot is a rather drab and predictable affair with the robots fighting the cat-like machine (and then other machines). I found myself getting irritated by the repetitious battles and wanted to see more of this intriguing world. Likewise, I wanted to see more of the adorable “stitchpunks,” especially the “cataloguing” scholars 3 and 4. Unfortunately, as soon as the robots are introduced they almost immediately start chasing the machines.As with other Tim Burton produced animated films, “9″ is not targeted toward children (it’s rated PG-13); however, the plot was too juvenile to keep me interested. I actually strongly preferred the short film, which I watched after the feature-length movie. Indeed, the short film packs a real emotional wallop that is sadly missing in the full-length version. “9″ is a noble failure (well semi-failure), and I applaud what Acker and Burton have tried to accomplish with this terrific looking film. I just wish that the plot had been worthy of the animation.

Great series for anyone who likes wrecks and wreck diving and naval history. I wish they had continued making the show after the first season. The underwater footage is excellent, and they tell the background on what the guys are looking for and finding. Plus great crew interaction so you really get the feel that “you are there”. Highly recommended.

PLEASE BE AWARE: The lovely cover image you see on Amazon is actually from the first DVD release of this movie. If you order this product, you will receive something that looks like this. (Unfortunately.)Despite the horrible artwork on the cover, this DVD set is by far one of the best 2-disk special editions I have ever seen. The movie is presented in its original widescreen cinemascope glory with sparkling menus, tons of extras, a tour of the castle, and a bonus movie. If it only had a concept art gallery, I would put it all the way up there with the Disney Platinum Editions.The first disk makes use of a map of Anya’s journal to Paris as the main menu integrated with clips from the movie. It also has something the Disney DVDs have been lagging on lately–a commentary. A commentary, no doubt, with Don Bloth and Gary Goldman, the two masterminds behind this film and many other animated masterpieces.Aside from that, the first disk also contains bonus features on how to draw four of the main characters in the movie. Now, most “how” to draw features start out with a perfect drawing of a character and then show three steps, each with perfectly matching lines and expect you to do exactly the same thing, which is simply ridiculous. This one was different, though. Don Bluth hosted four beautiful art sessions talking very realistically about how real artists do it, from 6B pencils to kneaded erasers to the fact that it’s okay to make mistakes. He went through the process step by step and amazingly, his drawings looked very sketchy and none looked exactly like the character he was drawing. I thought this was wonderful because it teaches that not all drawings come out perfect at first and even the best artists don’t just sit down, put their pencil to the paper, and have a perfect picture magically appear. The only thing I didn’t like about this feature was that you had to click Continue after each step or it would just stay paused.The other main feature on the disk was a singalong track containing songs from various older 20th Century Fox movies and hosted by a girl claiming to be Anastasia, but sounding nothing like her older or younger voices. The funny thing is, most of the songs on this track had absolutely nothing to do with Anastasia. In fact, I was surprised they expected kids to buy this DVD and know about these old movies such as Young Frankenstein, Shirley Temple, and many others including songs from the other newly rereleased animated Fox “Family Fun Edition” DVD, Fern Gully. Despite having little to do with the film, this 45-minute singalong track felt complete enough to sell on its own without any other attachments so it was a very hearty feature.The second disk had the must unenthusiastic narrator I have ever heard in my life. Never the less, the disk’s menu is a beautiful CGI tour of the Romanov palace. Each shelf contained objects that the real Anastasia might have had along with a description of their use and place in history. Some objects turned out to be games and others were more bonus features.The meat of the disk was a 45-minute documentary about the making of the film. It was very nice to hear from all the voice artists and other people involved, but the best part came from Don Bluth and Gary Goldman’s commentary. Those two men always know exactly what to say! Their honest, straightforward, and down to earth nature really made this DVD a gem to own. They have no intention of playing down to a young audience and are clearly very passionate about what they do. It was always wonderful to hear their insights on the movie and the art of animation in general and they really made this set worthwhile.Among the other features on the disk were a music video of Aaliyah’s rendition of “Journey to the Past,” a trivia game with questions that were not too easy, but not too hard about the film, and a virtual paper doll of Anastasia. There was also a multi-language reel of “Journey to the Past” and “Once Upon a December,” preceeded by a list of phonetic letters. The “karoake” section of the reel was extremely tedious because it would first show Anya singing a line in one language, followed by two girls who were being used as examples of how phonetic letters are pronounced repeating that line, then the line was played without singing so “you” could sing it in that language, and then Anya would sing it one more time and these four cuts would repeat for every line in the song in every different language. Fortunately you also have the option of just watching the multi-language song reel by itself without the girls or karaoke versions.Now we come to the icing on the cake. Not only do you get the movie Anastasia in this set, but you also get its spin-off film, Bartok the Magnificent, absolutely free! This 60-minute film is too long to be a short, but too short to be a movie and isn’t really worth buying by itself. However, considering that it’s free, it’s quite a worthwhile bonus feature indeed! With a unique story, original musical numbers, and everyone’s favorite pink and white bat, it’s sure to entertain for at least one sitting even if you never want to watch it again after that. The movie has nothing to do with Anastasia, but instead involves Bartok trying to rescue the kidnapped prince of Moscow. There are unfortunately no cameos of anyone else in Anastasia, but nevertheless, it’s a cute flick.At $10 on Amazon, this DVD is an absolute steal and anyone in their right mind should grab it the first chance they get. Not only do you get a gorgeous and expertly crafted film, but you also get a SingAlong movie, a second spin-off movie, games, historical references, and beautifully insightful commentary from the ever-devoted, ever-friendly Don Bluth and Gary Goldman. The princess Anastasia has truly returned to her rightful throne. The only reason I did not give this item 5 stars is because of the cover art.

This warm and romantic film from Don Bluth and Gary Goldman has long been my favorite animated feature. This mostly fictional story of Russia’s famous Anastasia and her search for her family is sprinkled with humor and great songs. The animation, from snowy Russia to glamorous Paris, is top-notch and the story is both heartwarming and fun.A great cast of voices, including Meg Ryan (Anastasia), John Cusack (Dimitri), Kelsey Grammer (Vladimir), Christopher Lloyd (Rasputin), and Angela Lansbury as Anastasia’s beloved grandmother add depth to an enchanting film. Anastasia wants to leave Russia for Paris because the necklace she wears has the inscription, “Together in Paris,” which she is sure holds the key to her journey to discover who she is and where she belongs.Dimitri and Vladimir plan to pass her off as the real Anastasia for the reward in exchange for her visa out of Russia. The banter between Anastasia and Dimitri masks a growing attraction, of course, and when Dimitri discovers before she does that she really is Anastasia he knows he must step aside.Complicating matters is the evil Rasputin, who has placed a curse on her family and sold his soul to destroy them. His little fruit bat, Bratok (Hank Azaria), is a very funny creation and turns out to be not so evil at all.The story is peppered throughout with great songs, including “Journey to the Past” and the haunting “Once Upon a December.” Anastasia is warm and involving, separating it from other animated films. When Anya discovers she really is Anastasia, it is bittersweet, as she now must choose between her past and her future. Love may conquer all, but not if the evil Rasputin has his way.This is a heartfelt and funny animated feature you’ll want to own and watch over and over. This particular edition comes with lots of extras for hours of family fun. Don’t miss this one.

I bought this movie because I’ve been interested in the mystery of the Grand Duchess Anastasia since I was a kid, not because I have rugrats. This movie was entertaining. Anya is a spunky heroine; Dimitri is a scrappy hero; they have a sweet and surprisingly adult romance and the plot is more realistic (except for the ridiculous villain Rasputin) than expected. There is a lovely, melancholy song called “Once Upon a December” that the amnesiac Anya sings in the empty palace as ghosts come out of paintings to dance with her. This movie isn’t historically accurate, but it’s a satisfying fairy tale — the way we wish it had been.

This is a really fun, fun movie. It’s not the beat all of science fiction as it was hyped when it was released, but it certainly is a good combination high adventure, situation comedy, cyberpunk, and Bruce Willis gun fighting action. Doesn’t make sense? Don’t worry. I’ll explain.High adventure comes from the plot: save the earth from evil by finding some mystic items and a perfect human before the appointed zero hour. That much is obvious. Cyberpunk explains in a way the setting of the futuristic urban scenes, which are fantastically portrayed in this movie. All of the settings and technology were impressive as well as stylish. The special effects were well above average and in many scenes very impressive, but a situation comedy? You got it. I won’t get into the details. I will say there are quite a few scenes that involve the kind of subplots you find in sitcoms. This is a good thing by the way. A lesser movie would mess this up. Director Luc Besson made all of these elements (no pun intended) fit seamlessly.Acting is great. Despite popular opinion of models not being very good actors the models that acted in this film did a good job of being campy in an entertaining way without hamming it up. I can go on an on about each of the reas actors and how they succeeded in pulling off whatever character, but I will digress to two ends of the spectrum. Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod is priceless and worth the price of admission alone. One exception I would have to say is Tommy “Tiny” Lister as the President. Up until the final scenes his acting was pretty dry. I also have to criticize whoever decided to hype up the fact the movie has Luke Perry in it, who played Billy. Billy did nothing to carry the plot and only had a cameo role in the beginning. Ugh… Hollywood.The movie can get too trendy. The music, though nice, didn’t really fit the setting. The very last scene is totally lame and if you ask me unlikely (sorry Korby…). And there is a scene or two that was just trying too hard to be hip. I can forgive all that because the comedy, action and drama do fit in to what ends up being a mirthful romp in high flying action.Sony dropped the ball on their first blu-ray release of The Fifth Element. The uncompressed PCM and Dolby 5.1 surround tracks blew you away, but the video quality was merely on par with regular DVD resolution. This time Sony listened to their fans and remastered the movie so that you get the full 1080p love you deserved the last time. Bought the first blu-ray? No problem. Sony seems to be offering an exchange program. Just contact Sony and they will set up a way you can pass your old blu-ray for the remastered one. Contact info is below:Phone: (800) 860-2878Email: consumer@sphecustomersupport.sony.comOne downside though: no extras. That’s right. All the cool stuff in the ultimate edition is gone. Getting this DVD is just like getting the first one they released. You get only the movie and some trivia text. If I were you I would still wait until they make some kind of special edition in blu-ray so you get the higher resolution AND the goodies.If you want to experience a varied range of pleasant emotions without taking any one of them too seriously then you’re going to love The Fifth Element. If you want high definition and special features then you better wait. I am betting this is going to be the case with most (if not all) new HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVDs that first come out.

“how can you tell the difference between the old and new packaging?” It’s a good question because outside of a few minor visual clues there’s nothing obvious that really separates the discs from one another, at least not until you know what to look for. First off the new disc has a TrueHD logo on the back, the original obviously didn’t. The security tape across the top of the disc case reads “FIFTH ELEMENT, THE RMSTD BD” on the new version, the catalog number on the spine of the re-master is 21520, the originals catalog number was 15018 and lastly the bottom border (front cover) area that contains the “Experience High Definition” slogan is set against a silver/foil background on the re-master versus a flat gray border on the original.

The story goes that director Luc Besson began writing THE FIFTH ELEMENT in his teens, incorporating all the Sci-Fi elements he loved into one over-the-top, grand space opera…sort of an “E.E. ‘Doc’ Smith ‘Skylark’ Meets Flash Gordon and Barbarella” hybrid with sex, intergalactic action, and even some pseudo-religious overtones tossed in…in other words, a teenage daydream come true! Critics panned the end result for this very reason, sneering at Bruce Willis’ Earth-saving (yet again!) Folks here trying to point out inaccuracies in the alternate history that unfolds when the CSA wins the Civil War are missing the point. Any chaos theoretician will tell you that a slight change to a system will result in massive change years later–in the “real” CSA there would probably never be a war with Japan, or the Nixon/Kennedy debate, etc. So what! A true examination of alternate history this is not, but I’m a hard-core history buff, and I was extremely entertained by this piece. It’s a hoot to see footage of the Berlin Wall going up, used to illustrate the “Cotton Wall” between the US and Canada!This was meant as a very biting satire of American culture, race, and slavery. It succeeds on that level. The only, and minor, complaint I have is that the low budget of this highly ambitious production occasionally spoils its “reality.”Also, some folks here presume this is some sort of Spike Lee production, which is not the case. Lee was asked to put his name on it as a “presented by” for marketing purposes, a seal of approval thing, much like Tarentino has his name on some Chinese action films. This piece is entirely Kevin Willmott’s baby, he’s a professor in the Film Studies Department of Kansas University.

“CSA” takes the format of the broadcast of a faux British documentary about the history of slavery in the CS after the War of Northern Aggression. It’s punctuated with commercials that suggest what life would be like in a society that has thoroughly integrated slavery into its basic structure.Contrary to what some reviewers claim, the documentary is a coherent, well-worked-out speculative history of what might have happened if the South had won. Some of it is based on what the South did, or wanted to do (the invasion and subjugation of South America, for example); most of the rest seems plausible, if only in terms of “human nature”.Several reviewers correctly pointed out that all the South wanted was the right to continue to spread slavery to states entering the Union, and that it had no /intention/ of conquering the North. This overlooks the fact that the only way it could have had what it wanted was by overthrowing the US government and seizing power. The South /did/ invade the North, and had it seized Washington, it’s unlikely it would have simply walked away from the opportunity to take control. Would you?If you’re expecting an SNL or MAD TV sketch, you’ll be disappointed. Though there are slap-your-knee/laugh-out-loud moments, the subject matter and its basically serious presentation prevent most of it from being amusing.Highly recommended, if you have the stomach for this sort of thing.

i won’t claim to know enough about american history to question the alternative history presented here. from what i do know though its accurate enough to turn the current history on its head. indeed, just before the end of the film credits inform us just how close perhaps we came to the horror described in this film actually being reality.at times hysterically and painfully funny, bitingly scathing of the csa while at the same time showing that (sadly), as some people have already pointed current us attitudes aren’t that different, even behind a facade of political correctness. this film pulls no punches throughoutusing real footage this is essentially a faux english documentary narrated by a ray stubbs soundalike, shown on csa tv interspersed with ads that straddle the border between truly offensive and truly funny (think south park/ borat) ads. it starts off with the south winning the war of independence with the history commented on by two talking heads, a black history professor from montreal and a csa-based white author – both, natch, on different sides. we also get to see the brilliantly odious (little lord – sorry, couldn’t resist) white bread presidential candidate fauntroy v. we also see the troubles that this increasingly isolated country suffers from and due to its attitude to slavery. te former includes some of the ‘problems’ with slaves mentioned below – in fact considering that phrenology was once accepted as good science the acceptance of the concept of freedom diseases like ‘drapetomania’, which causes slaves to run away should surprise no-one. the csa becomes more and more isolated as other countries recoil from its policy (though hands up europe has more of its share of blood on its hands due to colonialism. sadly too black african leaders don’t come out of this too well either.) one of the more shocking revelations is the support the csa lends to hitler and his ‘biologically correct’ policies – indeed the then president suggests to him why exterminate jews when you can instead ‘put them to work’ since extermination is a “waste of livestock”. maybe not so surprisingly is the fact that the csa fosters a right-wing christian fundamentalist mentality (with the catholic church accepted to be, after much debate, christian). hmmm, where’s that mirror???as pointed out some of the products show in these ads used to exist in the ‘real’ us. take the slave shopping network or control aid contrari – showing how blacks and mixed race are shown as truly sub-human in this ‘brave new world’ – with side effects which are not recommended by vets (VETS!!) on servants who are about to ‘drop a litter’. to show how well these ads mirror the america of the past, look at the pisstake of ‘cops’ called ‘runaway’. devoted to the capture of runaway slaves (quite the problem apparently), it has a laugh-out-loud theme tune; think the cops tune performed by a bunch of drunken hicks and you’re there.one final thought though – look at this ad and see how close it is to the parallel universe ‘cops’ show, look again at the faces of the runaways/ criminals and those of the cops. notice anything? just in case you missed it, how close is the ‘fantasy’ of teh csa to the reality of modern day america? the more things chance…

This documentary was extremely interesting and sad. What the young girls have to do to survive is depressing. There were times where I felt angry that the mother was endangering her child but I had to remind myself that their culture is different. All in all, I highly recommend this documentary.

In Iran after the 1979 Islamic Revolution the Shah of Iran was replaced by a theocracy. Most of the rights of women were removed through legislation. Children were allowed to marry at the age of 9. The only people who grew rich were the mullahs. This documentary shows the life of two women who like thousands of Iranian Women live a hopeless life because they are never given a chance to be independent and better themselves.

Every time I watch a movie like this always makes me depressed, especially after you pull yourself out of the movie and notice that you have so much that many people in the world don’t have.
