5Best comic adaptation of 2012
By A. Davies
First off, let me say that I am biased to this particular comic book character. I’ve been a fan since the late ’80s and have wanted a film adaptation for a long time. I am not saying that I am pre-disposed to like this film. In fact, quite the contrary is true. I’m not only coming at this from the point of view of somebody who wants to see a good movie, but as somebody who will be judging this by its adherence to and respect for its source material.I’ve been disappointed before. The Stallone version of the ’90s failed this test on both counts. In fact, the only thing that movie got right was a few beautifully rendered hyper dense scenic shots of Mega City one. This film didn’t have those shots. In fact, the scenic shots of the city didn’t seem that dense at all…yeah there were tall building….but spaced far apart. It seemed almost like a quaint small city trying to be a big one at the edge of a dessert. That is…until we are taken inside the city. This is one of the real coups the film pulls over on us. A few quick shots of the area around these mega blocks (big…REALLY big…More then twice the size of the Twin Towers big) reveal some familiar (especially if you are a New Yorker) buildings that frankly look like kids toys in comparison. When we are informed that the city has over 800 million people covering a land mass that stretches from Boston to DC, you have to intake air when you realize the true scale of the shots looking at the city from the dessert. We are quickly given a day in a life type story focusing on two characters who have an importent yet oddly impotent job in the city. To maintain order. And it doesn’t take too long until we realize how futile that task is in a city so enormous. The plot details are somewhere along the lines of a Die Hard film from that point on, but the feelings this setting evokes in us are more akin to District 9. It’s an all together beautiful and disturbing combination the filmmakers utilize quite adeptly. At some point we are inside one of these big blocks, and the Judges (a hybrid cop/judge given powers to dispense instant justice) we are following through their sadly ordinary day had to shoot lots of people and utter caustic lines like “Defense noted” or “you have ten seconds to comply”.Did I mention lots of people get shot? Well… let me put it this way: LOTS of people get shot. And we are not spared one ounce of gore when this happens. The film never really lets up, rather it moves at a brisk pace as our protagonists go about their job. The titular Judge Dredd is the experienced mentor, putting Judge Anderson through the ropes here. For those of us familiar with the comics, these are the two biggest characters in the world of Mega City one. While Anderson does go through changes, this film gives us a bit of her origins (placing this story actually BEFORE the comics really take place). While she goes from barely competent and wishy washy cadet to the beginnings of the kick ass PSI Judge we all know and love, Dredd himself never breaks a sweat. In fact, you get the sense that this particular day was no better or worse for him then the day before or the day after. His actions in the last scene of the film really hammer this home. This characterization is what really makes the film work. The sense that this is the norm in this city informes us of the prevailing fatalism that must soak into every citizen. It is a very bleak dystopian view of the future, that sadly looks all too understandable and real. We are never told how the human race came to be in those cities, or why they still exist there. It’s only that they ARE there. And it’s left up to us to fill in the importance of that.

5DREDD IS BACK!!!
By nmollo
DREDD 3DExcellent movie for the budget. The spirit of Dredd is here in spades. It is not perfect but bloody imaginative.First the camera work is fantastic. This is really a film to see in 3D. Not because of fancy Hollywood CGI but because of brilliant artistic imagery.MegaCity looks European in the visuals and vistas but maybe for Americans the vans and cars just look weird. So it works!Pete Travis’ direction is solid and Alex Garland’s script is informed and funny. Would loved to have heard Dredd say “Drokk” just once!Karl Urban is Dredd. He needs to be warmed too but he plays the part very well. Olivia Thirlby is also excellent as Anderson. Lena Headey is very convincing in her Motherly role.I do hope this becomes a franchise. Dredd is as important as Bond. Show him some respect.Brilliant!!!!!

5Destined to become a cult classic! It’s “Die Hard” meets “Robocop!”
By Georgio Alfani
It is an utter crime how this movie flopped at the box office. To be honest I had no idea what to expect when I entered the theater to see this movie. Initially i wanted to go see “Looper” but for some reason at the time I was in the mood for something less cerebral, so me and my buddy chose to see Dredd 3D after a class mate told me to check it out and that it was phenomenal. My God, I was completely blown away! I was so blown away that I went to see it again immediately the next day!You can tell the director of this film really cared about the project. I felt his heart and soul within every composition and frame. Before this film I use to be anti-3D but after I saw this, it completely changed the game for me, yes even more than “avatar” did. This was the first time I felt that the only way to experience this film was in 3d. even though this film failed at the box office, i feel as if i was part of something special because i was one of the few who saw it in 3d at the theaters. All those people who are going to rent it or buy it on DVD/blu ray will be missing half the experience in my opinion. Too bad for you guys!! And if there ever was a movie that would consider me to covert my home theater into 3d, it is this one.The way the film makers utilized slow motion was the best I have ever seen since the “Matrix”, maybe even better. Lately I’ve hated the way recent films have used slow mo, just for the sake of it (Sherlock Holmes) but Dredd actually uses it to engross the audience further into the story. I loved the way the cinematography switched up during these scenes, making the drug scenes feel surreal and beautiful at the same time. That, accompanied with the amazing score, really made me feel like i was on a wild thrill ride. I haven’t had this much fun at the movies in a while. This year has been a great year for movies. i loved “Prometheus”, “Dark Knight Rises” and “Avengers” and even “Looper” but Dredd was the most fun and mind blowing of them all, despite it’s simple down to earth story line. In fact I think it was the simplicity of the story that made it so great. It didn’t try to have Dredd save the damn world. it was literally like watching John McClane in “Die Hard.” It was all about survival!!Karl Urban was great as Dredd. He really knew how to internalize all the angry emotions of the character and I commend his performance especially since we never got to see his eyes. He always retained a calm but ruthless demeanor. Lena Headey was chilling as Ma-Ma, I’m glad to see her still getting work after her underrated and beloved performance as Sarah Connor in the Terminator TV series (if you haven’t seen that show, check it out, you won’t regret it!). Olivia Thirlby did a decent job playing the rookie/dredd’s side kick. At first I thought she was too young for the role but her character contrasted well with Dredd’s character. At times I thought the made her appearance too pretty but she carried the role good enough to make me overlook that.If you like films such as “Die Hard, Robocop, The Crow, or Darkman” YOU HAVE TO CHECK THIS FILM OUT!! It’s a true action film masterpiece that put’s the Expendables to sleep! This is easily one of the best R rated films to come out in a long time. These days everything is PG-13 just so the studio can sell more tickets and it was like a breathe of fresh air to see all the action and gore done in a way that wasn’t gratuitous but servicing to the story and suspenseful atmosphere the film was trying to create for the viewer. I haven’t seen violence in an action film done this well since the 80′s. Everything about this film is fresh and exciting. The only thing that I can nit pick about was some of the supporting characters (Ma-Ma’s henchmen) acting was bit forced but what do you expect from a low budget film? This film is one of the best-low budget films ever made and proof that you don’t need hundred’s of millions to deliver the goods. i think the reason why people didn’t check this out was because folks thought it was a remake of the the Stallone film. My god, how they were wrong! TOO BAD FOR THEM!! Even though in my opinion I feel that a non 3D version of this film won’t be as good as the 3D one I’d still recommend it to anyone, whether 3D or 2D. I’m definitely purchasing this when it comes out!

5Short but fun
By Eric D. Fether
Okay…so, it’s 6 minutes long. It was funny…kids loved it, and I appreciate the same voice actors as the original movie. Is it worth $2.99? It was for me and my family. It’s only $2.99…not $22.99. Who in their right mind would expect to buy a full length feature for $2.99?

1DO NOT BUY!!!! This is free on disney website!!
By L. Moreno
In a hurry to rent/buy something for my daughter and didn’t read the description. Now I did a search on Google and found the same video for free at Disney!! I feel really stupid for buying this!!! Never thought Amazon would have such small videos as I’m used to rent full movies and they are about the same price. For my daughter I usually get the free ones available for Amazon Prime subscribers.UPDATE: 2/19/2013 – Based on comments, it may not be free on Disney’s website anymore and NOW Amazon has the word “SHORT” in the title. It was not the case when I bought it by mistake… anyway… my review is still 1 star as I still believe this is not worth the price. Currently you can rent the full movie for 2.99, so why get this for 1.99??… You may say 1.99 is to buy this one, but I don’t see this being replayed very often to justify the purchase. My daughter watched just once and didn’t get her interested anymore.

5A classic series.
By cyclista
I was in high school when Star Trek originally ran. Even with the cheesy special effects and overacting, it was a show that we looked forward to every week. With the US in a foreign war, it was no wonder that a show would be so popular with a Prime Directive of non-interference. Here is a synopsis of the episodes in the second season.1. Amok Time: Spock must return to Vulcan to complete a mating ceremony.2. Who Mourns for Adonis?: The God Apollo invites the crew to his planet. One female crew member falls in love with him.3. The Changeling: A probe has changed from its original purpose to seek out life to a new purpose of destroying all imperfect life forms.4. Mirror, Mirror: A transporter malfunction send Kirk, Scott, McCoy, and Uhura into an alternate universe where the Galactic Empire is based on terror, treachery, and force.5. The Apple: A planet is beautiful but the plants shoot deadly needles and rocks explode. The peaceful inhabitants feed a computer that oppresses the culture of the planet.6. The Doomsday Machine: When the Enterprise responds to the distress call of the U.S.S. Constellation, a Doomsday machine that has already destroyed several planets targets the Enterprise.7. Catspaw: Kirk, Spock, and McCoy visit a Halloweenish planet with witches, black cats, fog and dungeons. An alien uses magic to persuade Kirk to leave without Scott and Sulu.8. I, Mudd: Harry Mudd has declared himself the king of a planet populated with androids. The androids won’t let him leave, so he wants someone to take his place.9. Metamorphosis: A man thought long dead has been kept alive by an entity called “the companion”. The Enterprise is brought to the planet by the entity to keep the man company.10. Journey to Babel: The Enterprise transports a group of ambassadors that include Spock’s parents. Spock’s father, Sarek, is accused of the murder of another ambassador.11. Friday’s Child: The Enterprise completes with the Klingons for a mining treaty with the tribes of Capella. The tribal leader is killed and the new leader favors the Klingons.12. The Deadly Years: After delivering supplies to a colony, the crew begins to rapidly age.13. Obsession: Two crew members die from what Kirk believes is the same cloud-like creature that killed half of the crew of the U.S.S. Farragut.14. Wolf in The Fold: Scott has a head injury and Kirk and McCoy take him to a planet for recovery. Three people are killed, and Scott is the only suspect.15. The Trouble With Tribbles: The small purring balls of fur are irresistible pets but a few on board the Enterprise turn into a horde. Worse yet, they invade a shipment of grain.16. The Gamesters of Triskelion: A civilization known as “The Providers” enslave the crew of the Enterprise with pain-inflicting collars to be gladiators.17. A Piece of the Action: The inhabitants of a planet have been contaminated with items from Earth and the Enterprise is sent to investigate. They discover a culture similar to 20th Century USA, complete with mobsters.18. The Immunity Syndrome: The Enterprise investigates the loss of contact with the solar system 7A. They find the solar system gone and then are trapped themselves.19. A Private Little War: Kirk is unhappy to find that the previously peaceful natives of a planet that he had visited several years ago are now at war. One side has flintlock firearms and the witch doctor asks the Enterprise crew for phasers.20. Return to Tomorrow: On a long dead planet, three have survived inside “globes”. They ask for help to build androids, but then decide that they would rather use human bodies.21. Patterns of Force: The Enterprise checks on a historian on a planet, and find a society similar to Nazi Germany.22. By Any Other Name: The Enterprise responds to a faked distress call and are overtaken by the Kelvans, whose goal is to conquer other galaxies. They are forced to take human form.23. The Omega Glory: The Enterprise discovers that the crew of a missing starship have been killed by a virus. They find the captain alive and violating the Prime Directive. The captain believes that the villagers are immortal.24. The Ultimate Computer: The Enterprise has been assigned to test a new generation of computers. After the computer destroys a freighter, it refuses to relinquish control of the ship.25. Bread and Circuses: The Enterprise has found the debris of the missing S.S. Beagle near a distant planet. The culture on the planet is similar to ancient Rome. They find that the captain beamed the crew to the planet. Those that couldn’t survive died in the arena games.26. Assignment: Earth: The Enterprise is sent back in time to the year 1968 to the planet Earth to find out how the arms race was survived. The ship intercepts a transporter beam with a space traveler headed for Earth.

5A Dream Come True
By Talk Story Bookstore
Ever since I watched the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Trials and Tribble-ations” back in 1996 and saw the classic Enterprise displayed with modern effects, I dreamed about one day seeing the entire Orignal Series retouched in such a magnificent way. 10 years later, that dream came true. Granted, the series does still retain that 60′s feel (especially with the bombastic style of the music, and of course the “military uniform” mini-skirts), there was so much of it that made for great television even for today. The effects being updated really gives the series credibility and believability for viewers and allows the original series to fit in properly with all the incarnations that came afterward. Bringing it to High-Definition was truly a great idea, and the live-action image quality is drastically improved, so much so that at times it gives the series an entirely new feel!Agreed by both casual viewers as well as die-hard fans, the second season of “Star Trek” provides us with a multitude of favorite episodes. Two episodes in particular that are given excellent treatment and incredible updating are “The Doomsday Machine” and “The Immunity Syndrome”. “The Doomsday Machine”, next to “The City on the Edge of Forever” is considered one of the best from the Original Series, even in its unrefined form. The updating on this episode put it into near movie-quality, far surpassing many Star Trek episodes, includng many from other spin-off series, and even perhaps a couple of the motion pictures. An interesting effect, to me, was how the remastering of “The Immunity Syndrome” made a not-so-great episode into a spectacular episode! The 1966 effects were good at the time, but the remastering gives it a whole new sense of realism and scope. Other classic episodes like “Amok Time”, “The Trouble With Tribbles”, and “Mirror, Mirror” are given good treatments, also.As of August 6th, I’ve purchased this set and have been thoroughly enjoying it as much as I knew I would. One of the most common complaints of one-star reviewers is that this season, unlike the previous season’s release, is ONLY on DVD, not on Blu-ray or even HD-DVD. Don’t let that discourage you. Even in this standard DVD version, Star Trek is given new life unlike ever before. This DVD’s visual quality is far better than any previous releases, especially since that this is a down-conversion of the cleaned-up High-Definition source. On a regular 480i/p CRT TV, it looks superb. On an HDTV, a good 1080p DVD up-converter will give you an excellent picture from the DVD; granted of course, it will not be the same as an HD release (no up-converter can do that, but they can get close). The truth of it is that this DVD will be better than what you can see on broadcast TV. I’ve even noticed that the standard DVD quality is better than the “HD” TV broadcasts. There have also been those who have wondered what Gene Roddenberry would have thought of this rebuffing of the series. To answer that, here is a segment from an interview with the executive producers of the remastered project on that very question:”What do you think Gene Roddenberry would think of the remastered effects?Dave Rossi: When Gene passed away and his estate requested that all memos and paperwork from the Original Series through TNG be turned over, I was the person whose job it was to wade through 27 years of material. One theme that popped up with some regularity in Gene’s memos was “What can we do to improve the visual effects?” While that alone isn’t an answer, the support the Roddenberry family and people like Bob Justman have shown during this project really reinforces the notion that Gene was always striving to improve the effects to help bring the world of Star Trek alive. We’re honored to help fulfill that wish.Mike Okuda: We had a number of long talks with Matt Jefferies before he died. For understandable reasons, Matt was one of our heroes. He was inwardly very proud of his work on Star Trek, but he was always very apologetic for the limitations of 1960s production techniques. He kept saying how he wished he had the technology that was developed after the show ended. We always responded by reminding him that his designs were a major reason why the show remains successful and watchable to this day. At the same time, it convinced us that he would have been the first to stand in line to update his own work, if he had been able.”Bottom Line — If you are willing to wait for the Blu-ray versions, that’s fine. I’m not. As a lover of the Original Series, it’s just too good to pass up. My hat’s off to to all those who participated in this extraordinary remastering effort and for turning a dream of mine into reality.

5A picture so clear that you see the greatness…and the flaws
By M. Herzog
Star trek has been written about probably more than any show. From its countless pop culture references, to it examination of political and social commentaries, Star Trek has been talked about ad nauseam. Given the vast amount of writings, in some ways, its almost arrogant to try and add something new. However, if you’re reading this, you’re probably not as interested in a review of the series and episodes as much as you’re interested in whether the Blu Ray is worth getting. I will say this new Blu-ray is something rather special. The picture is amazing, and I feel almost like I’m watching the show again for the first time, kind of like when you’ve heard a joke a hundred times, but then one day you hear it a little different and you laugh, like its new but familiar as well. However, the trouble is that the Blu ray is almost too good. I can tell when the make up meshes with real skint. I can tell when a punch misses the target. In fact, the Blu Ray is so clear that you can actually see and clearly identify the stunt doubles as they are intermixed with the close up of kirk or whoever is fighting. So your interest in the Blu ray may vary. While the show’s strengths in story and acting are highlighted, the weaknesses of the technology are made the more apparent. That being said, I love having the ability to watch both the new and old effects addition, as well as the slew of special features included makes this a must have for me.

4Hysterically ironic, even poignant at times.
By ChickenGrrl
I caught this film at the USA Film Festival in Dallas last year, thinking it would be a fun way to spend an hour or so. (As you may be able to surmise by my online name, I have something of a thing for chickens.) Little did I know what was in store for me and my companions. The stories are charming, some even downright silly, and I learned way more about chickens than I ever thought I would.

I loved the story of the lady who gave her chicken mouth-to-beak resuscitation after it got lost in a blizzard, garnering national attention for them both. Then there’s the story of Cotton, the pet rooster of a woman even more eccentric than I. This pampered chick has his own special seat in the car so that he may ride around with his owner, who dresses him in diapers (guess chickens can’t be house-trained!) and washes and blow-dries him daily, after they swim laps in her pool. He also loves to watch TV with his human. (Apparently chickens have vision similar to ours, and also enjoy all kinds of music!) There’s also a story about a rural neighborhood where a man who raised fighting cocks moved in, and all hell broke loose because of the noise the roosters made. I also learned from Mike (“Miracle Mike”) that chickens can indeed live a very long time without a head! And a pastor tells his moving story about a tiny hen he owned who defended her chicks against a marauding raptor. This little film may also make you change the way you think about eating poultry (I was already a vegetarian), showing the horrors to which chickens are subjected before being slaughtered for consumption.

Director Mark Lewis’ tongue is firmly planted in his cheek with some of these stories, treading a fine line between mocking/deriding his subjects, and gazing upon them with pure affection. This film is truly a celebration of chickens, and the people who love them.

5The Natural History of the Chicken is very close to
By yygsgsdrassil
….the Unnatural History of Man.If the story about the frozen chicken brought back to life with CPR doesn’t get you, or the one about the headless chicken or the one in which an entire country community responds to the torrent of Bantam rooster crowing, maybe the one in which the lady shows how she puts the Depends on her pet chick or the story of how the mamma chicken saves her brood from the hawk (‘I would be proud to be called chicken.’) will. These are tales told with a deadpan and a tongue in cheek ala PBS’s Rare Visions show. Something here will have you chuckling…or clucking….and putting a big smile on your face. If, however, you feel the need to sit on a few eggs, I suggest you seek a therapist.

5Share the Love, Hug a Chicken
By tjcrewsbooks
This is a great program for people who just don’t know chickens. The program comes across as a bit anthropomorphic, but it is a very sensitive, very enlightening, very engrossing, insightful look into the life of a fellow creature we too often take for granted. Chickens tend to be under-appreciated considering the numbers of them it takes to feed us. Eggs, McNuggets, buffalo wings, Teriyaki, chow mein, etc. There are several people in this program who are clearly absorbed with the Nature of the Chicken. They dearly LOVE chickens–but they are people who probably love cats, dogs, kids, and other people, too. Chickens seem much more special after watching this program.

5Painful, but inspiring to watch
By Jeanne Barkemeijer de Wit
My husband and I are recovering hoarders. We met Cory Chalmers long before we had seen or heard of the A&E Program “Hoarders”. Cory and the Steri-Clean staff changed our life. They helped us come to terms with our hoarding, and helped us learn tools to grow beyond the mess.I watch Hoarders religiously ::: to remind me where I used to be, and keep me from returning. Change is possible for hoarders ::: there is hope for people like us. FYI – We no longer live in a hoarded out mess, and have no intention of returning to that lifestyle.Kudos to Hoarders for it’s inspirational message!

3A disappointing season
By Jen Stelling
I hate to say anything negative about Hoarders, a show that wears its good intentions like a tiara of twinkling virtue, but this last season is hard to watch. Having the staff stay in the terrible hoarder environments overnight with infrared cameras must have seemed brilliant in production meetings, but it doesn’t work. Do these guys feel as if they need more camera time? Was that the pitch? Or is it an assumption about what the audience wants to see? Either rationale is disheartening and distasteful. These interludes erode the veneer of compassion that makes it possible to watch what is essentially blitz attack mental health treatment and lifestyle remediation, packaged as entertainment.Of course it’s also possible that the sheer number of people who may need this kind of assistance is discouraging. And after six seasons, it is clear that some of these people cannot be helped, which is heartbreaking. Will some future Bloombergian president make shopping illegal? QVC is like the 80-ounce soda for lonely folks.I do want more hoarders to get help, to get those kitty corpses out of freezers and be able to see their dining room tables, but would like for the show to drop the sleepovers, if it continues. Although actually what would be ideal is if there were a Habitat for Humanity-like charity/volunteer organization that did these interventions, rather than A&E.

5I was a hoarder.
By MaskedBird
I was a big time hoarder. Not with trash and animals. But with expensive industrial equipment, parts and tools. After watching a couple of seasons of Hoarders. I was able to do a massive clean out on my own. I have one more clean out to go. But watching the Hoarder shows really helps keep me on the right track. Kind of like AA for hoarders. And of course my mom is a hoarder as well, but has not come to reality yet. Her house is a total mess and I can’t do anything about it. When she sees me throw out stuff, she gets very irritated and warns me not to throw away useful stuff. It’s really hard some times. And my late father could not even throw out broken nails and staples!.

5One of my favorite Investigation Discovery shows
By Dee
Real life is so much more interesting than fiction. Being an admitted “real life crime drama” junkie, this is my favorite show because it allows you to get into the thought process of the bad guys and gives you a little insight into what makes them tick. Since completely giving up cable, I have missed the Investigation Discovery channel more than any other. Fortunately, Amazon allows me to get my “fix” through Amazon Prime Instant Video by offering several of these ID shows for purchase. Thanks Amazon & Investigation Discovery!

4Series worth watching
By Michel Kuzmiak
I must say that some things just don’t seem right about this series. Such as one episode that involves two parties accused of wrongdoing and a lot of loose ends. But that’s not to say that this isn’t worth watching. It’s a pretty good time killer. One thing I always look forward to is the excuses put forth and attitude of the convicts. Some of these guys emit a classic textbook example of an ego defense. For example, one guy boasting about hooking up with strangers the night they offed his wife, but insist he should be let free because he went so many years without getting arrested for another crime. Some of these guys tell a story about the time they confronted someone with a gun, and describe the incident as the victim defended himself and the gun just went off. Then you have a few people that genuinely seemed to have steered themselves towards making an honest living yet eventually get apprehended to go back to prison.

3Same actors on all episodes… No real photos or evidence?
By Gus123
The good:I love this type of shows and I really like the idea to hear the testimony and narration of the real “bad” guy from jail. The bad:They just show a few real photos of the crime scene or other real evidence creating just poorly made scenes with cheap decorations, same actors and police cars on all the episodes. The ugly red bus in the Episode 1 is used in several other episodes. This make hard to feel that the story is real. I saw the first 3 episodes and I love those 3 then I start seeing the same actors and I was relating one episode with the other in the back of my mind because this X actor was a bad guy in one episode but in the next one is an undercover cop.Overall I like it. I am still watching all the episodes trying to ignore the fact of the scenes, police cars and actors.

5It may be a slightly sub-par season of Trek, but it’s a real hum-dinger of a Blu-Ray
By Matthew T. Weflen
The Program:Since the A/V quality of the episodes is quite similar to the previous two sets, I will spend a little more time on the episodes in this set. Season 3 is generally regarded as the weakest of the Original Series (TOS), and I won’t offer much argument. Several episodes have rather silly premises. But that said, there are still several gems, the actors all still give it an earnest go, and the characters they have created carry the day. Season 3 is still entertaining and charming, if not as cerebral as the prior two seasons. Here are the episodes you get, with my own humble opinion and ratings (out of 5).Disc 1Spock’s Brain – a decent SF premise marred by silly execution. Spock as a radio controlled automaton is just a bit hard to take seriously. 2/5The Enterprise Incident – A classic show in which Kirk and Spock infiltrate a Romulan vessel to steal vital technology. 5/5The Paradise Syndrome – Kirk loses his memory on a planet with a “NativeAmerican” style culture. A decent show. 4/5And the Children Shall Lead – Ugh, what a stinker. A very annoying alien uses children to do his bidding. 1/5Is There in Truth No Beauty? – Diana Muldaur in her 2nd TOS appearance. A decent show. 3/5Disc 2″Spectre of the Gun” – Some love it, some hate it. I love it. The sparse design is visually stimulating, and the “western” setting is a precursor to later ‘holodeck’ shows. 4/5″Day of the Dove” – A pretty good show featuring the Klingons and a rage-inducing alien presence. 4/5″For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky” – Good sci-fi concept, but one TOS has done before, a society controlled by a computer. 3/5″The Tholian Web” – Kirk trapped in another dimension while aliens attack. Decent, but the pacing is a little sluggish. 4/5″Plato’s Stepchildren” – Absolute telepathic power corrupts a race of beings who once visited ancient Greece. Decent concept, but what of “Apollo?” 3/5Disc 3″Wink Of An Eye” – Some fun bits with an alien race that is sped up beyond our ability to see. 3/5″The Empath” – a weird, sluggish, kind of boring show about a trapped telepath who is the subject of alien experiments. 2/5″Elaan of Troyius” – A royal alien irritates the crew with her demands. She irritates the viewers, too. 2/5″Whom Gods Destroy” – an ex-captain attempts to escape an insane asylum. 4/5″Let That Be Your Last Battlefield” – one of Trek’s most hackneyed attempts to address a ‘Big Issue,’ that of racism. 2/5Disc 4″The Mark of Gideon” – An overpopulated planet concocts a crazy scheme to use the Enterprise to depopulate. Creepy and interesting. 4/5″That Which Survives” – a rather pointless episode about the last survivor of a dying race. 2/5″The Lights of Zetar” – a strange cosmic storm attacks the Federation library world. 3/5″Requiem for Methuselah” – Interesting show about an “immortal” man from earth’s history. 4/5″The Way to Eden” – Space hippies. One of the worst Trek episodes ever. 1/5Disc 5″The Cloud Minders” – One of the most overtly political shows in TOS, a race of aristocrats in the clouds subjugates a race of workers down below. 3/5″The Savage Curtain” – I don’t know how they made “Abraham Lincoln in Space” work, but somehow it does. 3/5″All Our Yesterdays” – a great s/f premise, in which a dying world sends its inhabitants back in time. 5/5″Turnabout Intruder” – an almost unbearably sexist show in which an ex-girlfriend of Kirk’s envies his job and his gender. 2/5Disc 6″The Cage” (2 Versions) – What Trek could have been. Amazing to see in HD. The original adventures of Captain Pike, Number One, and Spock. Quite a brainy show, with many interesting characters. 5/5″Where No Man Has Gone Before” (Alternate) A slightly different edit of the classic 2nd pilot. This cut has a voice-over intro, a few extended scenes, a different theme song, and title cards that say “Act 1″ etc. While it was transferred in 1080p from an original film print, it has not undergone the cleaning and color restoration that the other episodes have. All the effects are original as well. Definitely one of the top 5 TOS episodes ever, so it’s nice to have this additional stuff. 5/5The Blu-Ray:Like the previous 2 sets, the HD transfers of these shows are absolutely sparkling. Detail is through the roof, making every smile line, button and dial, star, and ship detail just pop right off the screen. Black levels are rock solid, especially in space scenes. Color saturation is deeper than deep, and bright colors are radiant in a way that the previous DVDs just can’t replicate. The show is presented in its original 4:3 aspect ratio. The only shots that don’t enjoy the same quality are shots with original optical effects in them (e.g. a phaser blast, the transporter). These shots are blurrier and grainier, because the film elements were scanned twice or more back in the 60s to introduce optical effects. These account for maybe 5% of each broadcast.Special effects sequences have been redone with modern CGI and in high definition. They look uniformly great, and they respect the original design aesthetic of the 1960′s material. All the original effects are on the same disc, and you can either watch the show with either set of effects all the way through, or switch on the fly with the “angle” button on your remote. Also included are several extra features. Several mini-documentaries, mostly reprised from the previous DVD set, are included on the final disc. New features include include several panel discussions from a recent convention, and a set of “home movies” from an extra on the Trek set. Unfortunately, there are no text or video commentaries on any of the episodes. The packaging has its issues. It doesn’t match the previous two sets in size, though it does in design. Again, my main beef is the fact that episode information is placed INSIDE the liner of the case. This means that ALL of the episode information is covered by the two discs in front and back. Having to pop out discs just to see what’s on them is really dumb. Why not put the episode titles on each disc’s face? Instead, I flipped the insert around so I could read it more easily.*****Even though the content is not as strong as the previous 2 sets, the quality is still stellar, and the extras (especially the “Cage” episode) are very good. There are several classic shows, and even the ho-hum shows still have that Shatner-rific and Nimoy-tastic character magic. For a Trek fan with a Blu-Ray player, this is a no-brainer. It’s essential to any HD Trek collection, and the quality of the presentation is top-notch. For everyone else, try the first set instead, see if you like it, and come back to this later.

4The Final Season on the Final Frontier
By Hank Drake
I reviewed most of The Original Series episodes during the initial DVD release which began in 1999. So, the comments here focus on this new, remastered, edition.Doubtless, Paramount will eventually release these episodes on Blu-ray. But even at standard definition, the picture has never looked better. The colors pop off the screen, scratches have been removed, and grain, while noticeable, has been reduced to a bare minimum. Unfortunately, with the improved picture, flaws in the original production are also more noticeable: shadows from boom microphones are occasionally detectable, and the 3rd Season budget cuts show in some of the temporary sets. Still, the picture shows the obvious care taken with the lighting and composition of the original shots (very different from today’s flatly-lit, smash & grab style of television filming).Of course, the primary feature of this new release is the new CGI visual effects. Season Three had a number of effects heavy episodes, including “The Tholian Web” and “The Enterprise Incident,” and they benefit the most from the new effects. Most of the new space shots are very convincing, remaining in the original spirit of the series. Only a few of the shots are major deviations from the originals, such as when the shuttle is seen exiting the Enterprise from the outside. Restraint seems to be the watchword here, and I would have liked to have seen a little bit more done, such as the replacement of some very dated tricorder screen graphics in “The Empath”, and some faulty dialog looping in “The Cloud Minders.” But the enhanced castle in “Requiem for Methuselah” is simply stunning, and the expanded backgrounds seen in “Spock`s Brain” and “The Way to Eden” (two otherwise weak episodes) are subtly done. By the way, my uncle, James Drake, was a background extra and can be seen in “The Way to Eden” as an orderly in sickbay. Blink and you’ll miss him as a red shirt in “Turnabout Intruder”.Also included here is a totally remastered and restored version of “The Cage”, the original, rejected, pilot which was shot in 1964 and starred Jeffrey Hunter. 64 minutes in length, it almost looks like a feature film, and in tone is more like an episode of The Next Generation than the Original Series. The new CGI visuals feature a slightly different version of the Enterprise (based on the original pilot model) than seen later in the series. The unrestored version, in alternating color and black & white, is also included. With the exception of The Cage, the episodes also include audio tracks in Spanish and French, although my partner (fluent in Spanish) tells me many of the Spanish translations are not faithful to the English originals. As for bonus features, most are carried over from the 2004 reissue, but the real highlight is Billy Blackburn’s behind the scenes movies, which show the actors in costume but out of character – a real treat.

5Weaker season, still amazing blu ray
By M. Herzog
Though I’ve never been a huge fan of the third season, I must say that watching them in beautiful blu ray really makes it an entertaining experience. The transfer, like the previous seasons, continues to impress. You can tell whoever worked on the show really loved what they were doing when they made the blu ray, as it looks spectacular. In fact, its so clear, little nuances can be notice that weren’t seen before, details in aliens skin, or special effects that were little more than blurry are now easy to see, and so clear you’ll never want to stop watching. As to the season, it was pretty evident that budget cuts had severly limited certain episodes, but were still largely good. What makes up for the clunkers (spock’s brain comes to mind) are the amazing special features, which include no less than three versions of “The Cage” and a never-before-seen variation on “Where No Man Has Gone Before.” Even if you have reservations for getting the “weaker” star trek season, the gorgeous picture, the great special features make it a must have for any star trek fan. If you have the first two seasons, you owe it to yourself to add this to your collection. Highly Recomended

5Another season of our favorite FRIENDS!
By Raj
The fifth season of FRIENDS is probably one of their most entertaining seasons made ever!!! This season contains a lot of funny moments and shows a clear development of relationships between the characters as well. Whether it be Phoebe giving birth to the triplets or Ross moving into the ugly naked guy’s apartment, Rachel avoiding to put the eyedrops for her infection or Joey getting a job at Caesar’s in Vegas, this season is fun-filled and very entertaining. We also get to see how the relationship between Chandler and Monica develop, from the first episode to the cliffhanger episode at the very end :) . Here is a list of the episodes in this season:01.The One After Ross Says Rachel02.The One With All The Kissing03.The One Hundredth04.The One Where Phoebe Hates PBS05.The One With The Kips06.The One With The Yeti07.The One Where Ross Moves In08.The One With The Thanksgiving Flashbacks09.The One With Ross’s Sandwich10.The One With The Inappropriate Sister

5The funniest season!!!
By Shannon
This season great episodes. One of my favorites, TOW Everyone Finds Out. The Monica and Chandler secret relationship was a brillant idea and funny to watch. The finale is one of the best with drunk Ross and Rachel. Joey with his hand twin. Monica and Chandler thinking about marriage. And Phoebe gambling and trying to avoid a person who is trying to get her jackpot.

4Move over Ross and Rachel, here comes Chandler and Monica
By Lawrance M. Bernabo
You have to admire the symmetry of “Friends: The Complete Fifth Season,” which opens with Ross getting married and ends with Ross getting married. It reminds me of “Gone With the Wind,” which begins with Scarlet pining for a man she cannot have and ends the same way. However, the key difference is that Monica and Chandler are a lot more fun than Ashley and Miss Melly ever were, that is for sure. For that reason Season Five is important in the “Friends” chronology, because it begins the second half of the series, which is operationally defined by the fact that as this point the Monica-Chandler relationship is suddenly transformed from a joke in the finale from the previous season into a driving force for both the season and the series. Even though we are now starting the final half of the final season, I think a lot of “Friends” fans are rooting more for Monica to adopt a baby (if not for Monica to actually be pregnant), then they are at this point for Ross and Rachel to finally end up together for the final time. While not as good as the fourth season, this one once again shows that having multiple story arcs for most of the characters is what works best for the series.

Best Shows of the Fifth Season: “The One After Ross Says Rachel,” not just because Ross is trying to salvage his new marriage before it is even official, but because Monica and Chandler cannot keep their hands or their thoughts off of one another; “The One with All the Kissing,” because of the stupid Not-in-New York rule, Rachel’s heartfelt admission to Ross, and Phoebe’s water breaking; “The One with All the Resolutions,” because Chandler is not allowed to make fun of Ross’s new leather pants; “The One Where Everybody Finds Out,” because they don’t know that we know they know we know and because Chandler knows something none of those that think they know happen to know; and “The One in Vegas Part 2,” because of the power of a hard eight.

This season has one of my favorite story arcs, as Monica and Chandler try to keep their romance secret from as many Friends for as long as possible, but there are also a lot of episodes that are average at best (e.g., “The One with the Yeti,” “The One Where Ross Moves In,” “The One Where Rachel Smokes”) to drag it down a bit. I was thinking that this season was going to grade out at a 4.5 that would get rounded up just for the surprise ending that no one every saw come (which, strangely enough, would explain why it was a surprise), but there are just too many average episodes (“The One with the Inappropriate Sister,” “The One With Joey’s Bag,” “The One Where Ross Can’t Flirt,” etc.). When I realized that there were more episodes on my average list than on my best list, I had to revise my rating appropriately. Yet this season has some of my favorite moments that the highs stopped me from seeing the lows.

4Only the third film can make it good
By Alexander W. Dorn
Warning – Spoilers ahead . . .

When I first saw the film, well, I didn’t like it too much. It seemed to be over-packed with CGI Fight scenes and a storyline that didn’t really mean anything. While Zion is under attack, Neo, Trinity, and Morpheus must find the keymaster to unlock the doors to the mainframe and end the war, thus freeing Zion.

This entire storyline, to me, seemed contrived, making the fight scenes seem meeningless, their overzealous and sometimes long running effects just becoming tiresome.

But, then I got it. Weeks after seeing it, it finally clicked.

They symbolism of these films is much deeper than the average action-movie viewer is usually given. Yes — the entire “The One-Saves the world” storyline is meaningless, and that’s the point. While paying too much attention to events within the computer-generated fantasy world of the Matrix, the real world, and Zion, fall into greater danger.

We are introduced to two ‘french’ characters, programs, which exist simply to experience life. While they are among the long list of villians in this piece, they are also the key to the story. They describe the situation in as much in the film, seeing our heroes as mere puppets in a meaningless plot, which, in fact, they are.

While are main characters are engaged in a meaningless task, struggling to achieve goal after goal in a virtual world, events of the real world are dire, and, just perhaps, if more attention were paid to the real-world events, perhaps the situation would not be so dire.

It is not until Neo discovers that his existance as ‘the one’ is simply another level of control set in place by the machines, that the entire struggle within the virtual world of the Matrix has no real meaning, only then does the truth come to light, just in time for this second chapter to come to a close.

Think about it, how many people do you know who obsess on politics, or sports, or their favorite television show, or even the Matrix itself? We engage in meaningless struggles to achieve goals that, in the end, really have no meaning but to feed our own ego.

A very profound statement to be made by an action film, that is, if the third and final installment draws this observation out.

As I see it, the value of this second episode is entirely dependent upon the content of the third chapter, but the potential is much greater than most people give it credit for.

Thank you for your time.

5deeper than the first
By A Customer
I’ll admit nothing beats the feeling of watching the Matrix for the first time, and Reloaded doesn’t compare with that feeling, however Matrix Reloaded warrants a repeat viewing and more viewings after that because the subtext of the film is nothing short of amazing. It’s deep folks. And the anti-climax is in my opinion almost as shocking as the twenty minute mark into the first. Read into it, and you won’t be disapointed. I can’t wait until Revolutions.

3Flawed, wasted opportunity (spoilers)
By A. Lee
The Matrix Reloaded isn’t a bad film. It’s a very watchable, fun film. But the real disappointment is that there was the potential for it to be as fabulous as the first Matrix. It’s a squandered opportunity. Sometimes when someone writes a novel that becomes a smash hit, the next isn’t edited properly, because the publishing company are eager to keep their cash cow happy. That feels very much what happened here. It feels like nobody kept an eye on what the Wachowskis were doing, nobody tried to keep them focused, nobody steered them towards the story rather than the whizz-bang. And it’s a crying shame, because the ideas they had for these films are completely brilliant. The core of the second movie is the discovery that the entire premise of the first was a lie. The Prophecy is just another layer of control. The machines created Zion, selected the One, and set him up to start the cycle, just to keep people pacified; the naturally rebellious would have an outlet for their energies that could never threaten the status quo at all. Zion and the human resistance are no more nor less than a machine-created pressure valve for the Matrix itself. That idea is brilliantly clever; breathtakingly so. If the movie had been made with that at its heart, with everything else there just to serve the story, you’d have a movie that excelled the first, and could stand alone. But that wasn’t what happened. And the failure of that story means that the last movie failed too, because its own story was equally muddled and equally squandered, and that compounded the problems. If the first movie had stuck to its story, and the second had lucidly set out that the machines are just as much sinned against as sinning, and can co-exist with humanity if only the hawks on both sides will allow them to do so, you’d have a brilliant series. But that isn’t what happened, and saying “people didn’t get the movies” just isn’t good enough. It isn’t a lack of intelligence that caused that problem. It’s a lack of coherent, skilled story-telling. The first film was beautifully made and tight, taut narrative drove the plot. The second and third were muddled and self-indulgent, despite fantastic ideas and stunning set-pieces.The first Matrix movie had budgetary constraints that meant all the action had to be justified by the plot. Here, the action is as out there as they can possibly make it. There’s no sense of it being purely to further the story; it’s an end in itself. The famous “burly brawl” (Neo v hundreds of Smiths) looks fake a lot of the time and goes on too long, and the real shame of it is that half the length and a lot less CGI and it could have worked. The point of that scene is that there is someone new in the mix whose power threatens even Neo, but that gets very lost. Similarly, the freeway chase scene is amazing, but too long. It dislocates the movie and makes the real heart of it – the final mission – feel squashed and an oversight. The focus on set pieces such as these makes for a choppy, episodic feel, and it’s a real shame, especially as when they work the fight scenes are extraordinary – the Chateau scene is balletic in gracefulness and looked breathtaking on the big screen, and Neo’s brief initial fight with agents sent the adrenaline in the cinema rocketing. But the sloppy editing and pacing of the movie really doesn’t do it any favours.Similarly, there are too many scenes that simply don’t need to be there. The conflict between Morpheus and the Zion military command is dull, dull, dull. I can’t imagine anyone cares. Link is a brand new character, and while the actor is light-years better than the appallingly hammy one who played Tank in M1, I can’t imagine anyone investing in his marital problems after a two scene acquaintance. Most of the Zion scenes are redundant, though I’m possibly in an Anglo-Saxon minority in not thinking the sex scene is one. I don’t see what the issue is in showing characters supposedly madly in love having sex, especially given the weight the movies place on that relationship later. The scene was framed to make it about intimacy and profound connection rather than explicit nudity – as you’d expect from the directors of Bound – though the Zion rave scenes it was cut with were a trifle annoying, looking as they did like an X rated Pepsi commercial.Another problem is the wordiness and the heavily sign-posted symbolism. A good script shouldn’t need to beat you over the head, yet here a lot of ink is spilt saying very little. The restaurant scene with the Merovingian is brilliant – well written and wonderfully performed – but as the character really hasn’t been given enough to do, it’s also redundant. This is especially unfortunate when the Merovingian says, with complete accuracy, that Neo is just doing what he’s told and has no idea what his role really is. That salient observation is lost in all the waffle. This is a problem throughout; something may look good, it may sound good, but if it doesn’t matter to the plot, it needs to go. The Architect scene is one that really does need to be there, and the for once the wordiness worked for me. It highlighted the difference between human and machine really well. But that was an exception. The constant talk of Purpose and Causality and Choice and Meaning is the paradigm of telling rather than showing, and if that’s problematic in a book, it’s a disaster in a film; particularly one so reliant on special effects. The effects and the wordiness and the heavy symbolism compete and counter one another, cancelling one another out and overloading the movie. Oddly enough in a film that prides itself on taxing audience intelligence, the philosophical and religious symbolism is laid on with a trowel at best, and beaten into your head with a baseball bat at worst. Those themes would be a lot more interesting if they were more subtly woven and didn’t get in the way of the story. Exposition that detracts from the actual plot might be interesting in an art house film, but in this one it just doesn’t do anything but diminish returns. There’s another big issue with a movie that throws so many words and so many explosions and fights into the mix: suspension of disbelief. When Neo stops sentinels with his mind, you need to be engaged enough with the plot to care. He can do this because he’s been to the Source – the machine main frame – and presumably has enough of the machine code in his cranial hardware to do so, but it seems so out of left-field that you just think – huh?! The brilliance of the first film was the immediacy and plausibility of it. How *do* we know what is real? How can we be certain that life is as it seems? And the hyper-reality of the fighting freed and the Agents worked well juxtaposed to the broad mass of the rest of us. But in the sequels, there is no broad mass. We see programmes who are as stylised and skilled as the rebels, and you lose sight of the link to reality. Zion is a movie fantasy, too. I can’t help suspecting that by losing the real world as we know it when portraying the Matrix, you lose some of the urgency. You also lose a connection to the audience. There’s far less to identify with – to make this war and this battle feel relevant to audience lives. It’s harder to care about the characters. This dislocation increases as the sequels progress and I found the eventual deaths – even of Neo and Trinity, characters I’d loved – muted and less than tragic. I think that is a pretty telling indictment. The acting is mixed. I did feel Fishbourne phoned it in, to an extent. He obviously loved the character and that made him, for my money, a little self-indulgent. He sounds wonderful and looks fabulous, but there isn’t the charisma and warmth he had in spades in the first film. Carrie Anne Moss is a fantastic actress, completely different in every movie I’ve seen her in and very convincing in all, but the oddity for me was that she was a different character in this movie to the Trinity in the first. You could argue that the character is now in love, but she still seems a completely different character, even in scenes where she isn’t speaking. It doesn’t matter hugely as both are likeable and engagingly intelligent portrayals, but if you watch the films together, it’s noticeable, and I do wonder if the actress didn’t just find a new portrayal after the break instead of rediscovering the old. In a sense it’s a compliment to her that there is so little of her own personality in her acting – someone essentially playing themselves wouldn’t have the problem. I also found her fight scenes rather less impressive in the sequels, to the point I wondered if the actress had been injured? She did far better in the car/bike chase elements. I thought Keanu Reeves was great as Neo; the change here is every bit as enormous but makes far more sense in terms of the plot. A lonely computer geek is now pretty much God with a wicked-hot girlfriend, so you’d expect him to be a tad more assured. People say Reeves is a terrible actor, but actually I disagree. I’ve seen him interviewed and was amazed to find he was very bright – and then realised that I’d thought he was Ted. Most of the world thought he was Ted. Now most people think he’s Neo. Given the gulf between those characters, that’s quite some achievement. He has a stillness and an innocence – a goodness, really – that worked really well here and he looks amazing in the fight scenes. I don’t think he has huge range as an actor, but in his own parameters I think he’s fantastic and the role suits him brilliantly. I also loved the actor who played the Merovingian; the Keymaker is also excellent; the Architect was genuinely chilling; and Hugo Weaving seems temperamentally incapable of ever turning in anything but a superb performance, no matter what he does. Jon Voight was also good in a cameo role (though it would have served the film better if his cameo had been single scene – only Star Trek fans could have enjoyed the Zion Council scenes). The real failure of this film is that between the endless talking and the endless fighting you end up feeling like hardly anything important happened – that it’s light on plot. And nothing, actually, could be further from the truth. A film with a brilliantly clever plot, some wonderful characters, and some fabulous action scenes ended up being a bit of a confusingly episodic mess. A hugely enjoyable, fun, action-packed mess, but a mess just the same. The action and speech disguised rather than revealed the plot, and it’s such a shame. This movie is a real lost opportunity. I’d buy it anyway, expecially in Blu Ray and especially if I had a very large screen! But I can’t help feeling sad that they didn’t have someone from Warner keeping their eye on the ball. They killed their own franchise and didn’t really realise their vision, I don’t think.

I have been hoping Nickelodeon would make the box sets (or any sets) of “Hey Dude” & “Salute Your Shorts” for some time now, but heard of nothing yet. I think if Nickelodeon has any chance of keeping up with DIsney Channel, they need to start making the classics and then onto new stuff. I bought Pete & Pete (both seasons) the day they came out and my hopes were high that Salute Your Shorts & Hey Dude were soon to come. Unfortunately, as of 2010 there’s still no word… Come On NICKELODEON!!! Get On w/it or sell the rights to someone who will do it!!!!

5Nostalgic
By Darrin Omo
Sure this show is low budget, cheesy, and very family friendly, but I used to catch it on Nickelodeon back in the 90′s and enjoyed watching it. Now I have those memories attached to it, which makes it a childhood classic for me….not to mention it was filmed in Tucson and I live in Phoenix.

5Bringing back the memories
By MusicGeek
It’s great to see that Nickelodion starting to release some of the shows I loved as a youth. Hey Dude is one of those shows. After purchasing and downloading the first season the memories have come flooding back. Although the show is very out dated (the first season aired back in 1989), I still really enjoyed watching it. I think I will forever treasure Hey Dude. The video and audio quality of the downloads are great. With the Amazon Unbox Video feature I was able to download each episode to my hard drive so that I can view the show while not connected to the internet, so now I can even enjoy the show while traveling. After seeing they have released Hey Dude, and Salute Your Shorts, I can only keep my fingers crossed that sometime in the near future we will see the release of You Can’t Do That On Television, and I would love to see some of the old episodes of Double Dare.
