Fun Finding Treasure

One truly great thing about this movie is that it is not in the least pretentious, overblown, pompous, puffed up, or heavy handed. Neither does it hit you over the head with an overload of CGI and special effects nor wallow in personal issues like so many film today.This movie is basically a swimming trunks and bikini action adventure flick. so, if want some good shots of Jessica Alba (Sam) in a bikini swimming – this movie is for you.But there is more to “Into the Blue” than that. And it is not a teenager kind of film (i don’t think there is one teenager in it, although ofcourse they may enjoy it like anybody else). Jessica Alba was probably about 23 years old when she was making the movie – and Paul Walker (Jared) was at least 31.i’m not going into basic plot details (that has been done by others here) – just some fun observations.Sam has a kissy-kissy ralationship with boyfriend Jared. in the first half of the film this actually becomes a turn off – it was funny when one of the characters actually tells them to basically ‘knock it off ‘ when they start in on one of their run-of-the-mill kissing scenes. one thing more about turn-offs in the movie, *(SPOILER – WITHOUT TELLING YOU WHO OR HOW)* when one of the main characters gets seriously injured and dies there is hardly any real or true concern for her life expressed by anyone.But the film does mangage to finally get into some actual story-telling with some good twists and turns. a bit far-fetched and drawn out near the end but that’s what makes it fun!!.So for me “Into the Blue” gets 4 stars; it has a good moral to it – about the real treasure found in one’s own heart, it had good nature photograghy of the ocean — and it was just plain fun!!It turned out to be pretty good.

INTO THE BLUE surprises. Despite an opening sequence that is frightening and grisly, this film starts with the feeling that it is another pretty people at the beach flick – mindless, but visually attractive ‘what I did last summer on the waves’ story. But stay tuned: this is a film of visual splendor and tense intrigue and action that is up there with the best of them.Amidst some of the most spectacular underwater sea photography on record blooms a story of friends with polar priorities: Jared (Paul Walker) and Sam (Jessica Alba) live the simple life in the Bahamas, sport diving, looking for lost treasure ships as a hobby; visiting lawyer friend Bryce (Scott Caan) and his just-met current squeeze Amanda (Ashley Scott) have dubious pasts and are out for the quick buck no matter the dangers. This quartet spends the first part of the film diving and playing underwater with the glorious sea life until the unexpected discovery of a submerged airplane (recall the opening sequence) containing vast amounts of cocaine changes the playing board. Jared and Sam won’t deal in drug trafficking while Bryce and Amanda are unable to resist. Once this strident mark is hit the movie becomes a fast paced intrigue of good vs evil, crime, police corruption, all mixed with chase sequences both on land and underwater. Tragedies occur, priorities alter and the polarities among friends are tested.Even if the story of sunken treasure and drug trafficking weren’t as well written as they are, this film would be well worth the time spent just watching some of the finest underwater choreography on a stage both fascinating and gorgeous and with a cast of beautiful bodies in synch with the splendor. The cast is good and certainly beyond even the eye-candy appeal of each of the actors. Peter Zuccarini’s underwater cinematography deserves Oscar attention; Shane Hurlbut controls the above water cinematography well. But director John Stockwell is to be commended for the pacing of this edge-of-the-seat story – and that is saying a lot for a film that is close to two hours long! Yes there are chinks in the mortar of the story and moments where the audience must suspend belief (just how long can Paul Walker hold his breath anyway?), but in the end this is a film that deserves serious attention from the movie audience. Sweet enough to make your teeth hurt, but not much substance.

Mayson (Dan Selon) is a twenty-something gay man who is waiting for his first kiss (Yes, really!) His BFF, Robyn (Kendra Thomas) is pushing Mayson to be more aggressive about meeting other guys, and be open to whatever might happen, such as speaking to the cute guy they saw at the library and again at a coffee shop. At a party thrown by a mutual friend, Mayson encounters Reilly (his crush) again, and learns he had recently broken up with a girlfriend (Uh, oh). Of course, since this takes place in the Los Angeles area, where all cute guys are gay, Mayson and Reilly find a common interest in each other, and it goes from there.The story is told in flashbacks with quick cuts to scenes with different characters, making it a bit confusing. While the concept is sweet and charming, and the attractive, inexperienced cast does the best with what they were given, the story (such as it is) suffers from rather cartoonish situations and some of the most inane dialogue I have ever heard in a film. There are also problems with the sound, and I had to constantly lower and raise the volume to hear one bit of dialogue, only to be blasted out of my seat at the next scene. Not rated, but would be a PG-13 at worst. DVD has no extras besides trailers and chapter stops. Best I can do on this one is give it three stars out of five.

Just finished watching this movie. Overall, I enjoyed the story. Very sweet and romantic. But I agree with another reviewer, it was a little confusing with the flashbacks, and the sound was terrible at times. The actors are all very cute, and the dialogue is fun and catchy. Not alot of depth, but then, it isn’t intended to be that kind of movie. If you want a low budget, feel good romantic movie, I think you’ll like this one.

Not Much Substance to This Film

I’ve seen a lot of gay films (around 250 or so) and this one is not high on my list. I will first focus on the strengths. This tells a simple story of an innocent and idealistic young man looking for Mr. Right. He finds him in another man who is only beginning to explore the possibility that he might be gay. For both of them, they share their “first kiss” with each other and then the film is over. Prior to that touching moment, we meet a lot of odd friends who like to drink and smoke pot and behave in silly, goofy ways. The acting comes across as insincere. At thirty minutes, I thought, “I hope this film gets better,” but they almost never do after thirty minutes and this one didn’t either. I recommend this film only if you have few other choices. My recommendations of tremendous gay films, awesome writing, insightful stories are: Priest, A Home at the End of the World, The Journey of Jared Price, Locked Up: Love Behind Bars, Milk, The Sum of Us, Making Love, Latter Days, Long-Term Relationship, Regarding Billy, and Touch of Pink, You’ll Get Over It, All Over the Guy, Another Country, Back Soon, Beautiful Boxer (transgender theme), Beautiful Thing, Get Real, Big Eden, Boy Culture, Brokeback Moutain, Chris and Don – A Love Story, Coffee Date, C.R.A.Z.Y., An Englishman in New York, Fighting Tommy Riley, Gay Sex in the 70s, Gone, But Not Forgotten, Guide to Better Gay Sex (hot!), In and Out (hilarious), Just a Question of Love, A Love to Hide, Ma Vie En Rose (My Life in Pink) [transgender theme], Make the Yuletide Gay, and too many more to list.

We LOVED this movie at Halloween this year. My 6 year old watched it over and over again. I enjoyed it just as much as she did. My 4 year old watched the majority of the movie – except when they actually “transform” from kid to werewolf – is pretty scary for a young child. I’m really hoping that Nickelodeon will release this movie on DVD for us to buy before next Halloween!! I’d say any kid between the ages of 6 and 14 would seriously enjoy this one, and adults that like to enjoy watching a movie with their kiddo’s too!! (other great “not too scary” halloween movies we loved this year were: All the HalloweenTown movies, The little Vampire, the Tower of Terror was a favorite, and the Casper Movie (with Bill Pullman) is really good – but it does have ALOT of curse words…so, I’d be careful with that – depending on how well your children pick up on them). My kids have outgrown the “cartoon Dora/Max and Ruby” type Halloween movies – so these I’ve mentioned were great “next steps up” for them. I have kids who aren’t scared of anything, and I’m not too overly cautious about what they watch – so, as usual, use your own judgement about what your kids are ready for…But definately 2 Thumbs up for Nickelodeon and THE BOY WHO CRIED WEREWOLF!!

Exploding on the screen with color, violence and a great story, this Brazilian film captures the essence of life in the City of God, a slum of Rio de Janeiro. Based on a true story of a young man who somehow escaped the preordained fate of his companions by becoming a photographer, the director, Fernando Meirelles, uses every modern technique to achieve his razor-sharp scenes of drugs, murders and non-stop violence that spins out of control and just keeps going.
The frantic energy of the film and fascinating story kept me at the edge of my seat, as a voice-over narration that moved backwards and forward in time, held the story together. All of a sudden, a detail would be revealed that explained something that happened in the past, and, like an electric shock, my grasp of the story would move to even deeper levels. There was little time to ponder it all though, because I was so caught up in what was happening on the screen that it was only later that I could appreciate the brilliance.
We watch several young boys grow into teenagers, tentatively experiencing the world of girls and drugs and guns and murders and crime. There’s upbeat samba music throughout, and brilliant colors and blood. There’s horrific violence, and also fine moments of humor and humanity. All together it just picked me up and plunked me down right into the middle of this world which made me hold my breath and live on the edge with the more than 200 non-professional actors who were recruited for this film. The sense of place is amazing. And the acting was more than just acting. It was real. And it was also one of the most creative films I’ve ever seen. Bravo to the filmmakers! I give “City of God” my highest recommendation.

“City of God” (“Cidade de Deus”) is the story of a boy, but also the story of a “favela” (Portuguese word with similar meaning to slum or shantytown) on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. That shantytown is called “Cidade de Deus”. Throughout this extraordinary movie both the boy and the favela grow, albeit obviously in very different ways 
The boy is Rocket (Buscapé in Portuguese, played by Alexandre Rodrigues), who is born in Cidade de Deus and grows up before our eyes living in it. He is quiet and easygoing, just a non-violent person seeking a way to survive in a brutal environment. Rocket ends up doing exactly that through his passion, photography, that ends up making him an intermediary between the local gangs and the press. He is also the narrator of this movie, the voice that accompanies us throughout many of the stories that “City of God” has to offer…The other main character of “City of God” is the “city” itself, that starts merely as a couple of houses, but that grows immensely as years go by. The activities in which its inhabitants are involved also change, from petty robbery to organized crime that involves drug dealing and arms trafficking. We see Li’l Zé (Zé Pequeno in Portuguese, played by Leandro Frimino), one of the boys that used to play soccer with Rocket, grow up to become a murderer and a drug lord, someone that makes his own laws. The same happened with others, but Li’l Zé probably represents to most dangerous kind of sociopath that the favela can produce. Rocket and Li’l Zé, same circumstances, different persons, different choices. Who says that where you lives determinates how you are and what you do?. This is an excellent example that that is not always the case…Directors Fernando Meirelles and Kátia Lund somehow managed to convey in their movie the full strenght of the novel (written by Paulo Lins) on which “City of God” is based. This film is full of colour and energy, carrying the spectator at a dizzying pace through the twenty years it covers, never giving him time to get bored. It is wortwhile to point out that most of the “actors” didn’t have any real experience as such, they just happened to live in different slums of Rio de Janeiro (including Cidade de Deus) at the time when the film was being made. I think that is something that shows in the realism of the results…On the whole, I can say that I loved “City of God”, notwithstanding the fact that it is undeniably bloody and has some very violent scenes. In my opinion, they are not gratuitous, because they help the directors to capture what may really happen in a Brazilian shantytown, and show it to us. All in all, this movie is nothing short of an experience worth having and sharing. If you watch “City of God” and love it as much as I do, do your part and recommend it to others Belen Alcat

So this is what Brazilian ghettos look like. Stylistically a little like “Traffic” (liberal reliance on sepia tones or drugs) or “Salaam Bombay” (similar theme couched in the streets of Bombay), this movie is a bloody but captivating look at real life in modern day Rio.
Gangsterism is no more a fringe career option amidst the socio-economic strife of the city, but a prime-time industry that takes guts and guile to keep away from. Character after character in the movie fall a prey to this vicious panoply of drugs, poverty and gore. An underlying personal thread is the story of how our protagonist, Rocket, becomes a news photographer and escapes from the slum. Plus, a minor subplot about how he loses his virginity.
Technically, the movie is nothing short of stunning. Several virtuoso scenes are strewn together with clever direction in which the dizzying pace and the sheer number of characters don’t detract from a coherent, well told story. We are led in and around scenes, and frequently led back to explain why what occured occured. Wannabe-editors will marvel at how cunningly this effect is achieved. The cinematography, needless to mention, is geewhiz, the screen literally pops with color.
I could wax eloquent about more reasons but the proof is in the pudding. City of God bursts at the seams with energy, vivid color and a poignant story of a man’s escape from the social drivel he is born into. If you can get your hands on this movie, do so pronto, you won’t regret it.

Benjamin “Finn” Finnegan (Matthew McConaughey) is a beach bum with an interest in treasure hunts. He’s also hardly responsible, which is why he sets his boat on fire and sinks it not too long after we meet him.Tess Finnegan (Kate Hudson) has had enough. She’s taken a job aboard millionaire Nigel Honeycutt’s (Donald Sutherland) yacht. And she’s divorcing Finn.Finn’s latest quest is the Queen’s Dowry, a treasure lost almost 300 years ago. In fact, he’s found a piece of it. Now all he needs is financial backing. His irresponsibility has left his last backer rather mad at him. So he decides to get Nigel’s help, completely unaware that Nigel is Tess’s new boss.Unfortunately, the shipwreck is somewhere around the island owned by dangerous rapper Bigg Bunny (Kevin Hart). As in Finn’s last investor. Can they find the treasure without Bigg getting his hands on it? Can Finn win Tess back in the process?Let’s be honest, this is mindless, predictable entertainment. Especially since the previews gave away many of the key scenes. But it is fun.It’s trying to be a action comedy. It had some laughs, but there weren’t as many as I had hoped. The funniest scenes involved Nigel’s daughter Gemma as played by Alexis Dziena. Anytime she was on screen, I was guaranteed a laugh. Most of the action in the film was played for laughs as well, and is over the top. Then again, what action movie isn’t over the top? Even the exposition scene near the beginning that is key to understanding how Tess and Finn got started on this trail wasn’t that great. I couldn’t follow it, and I tried.So why did I like it? Because of the characters. I really did care for all of them. Well, the good guys anyway. Credit for this obviously goes to the actors who are obviously having so much fun making the film. Frankly, they made it hard for me not to like it.It may make me a fool, but I enjoyed this movie. You may not want to rush out and watch it, but if you get a chance, I bet you would enjoy it.

You can guess the ending before watching the opening creditsIn other words, there’s nothing new about this light and ditzy treasure hunting romp that plays heavily on stereotyping and McConaughey’s shirtless bod.The legend behind the treasure is interesting enough. Forty chests of gold and jewels, destined to be a dowry fit for an eighteenth century queen, was lost without a trace during the hurricane season of 1715. Finn (McConaughey) and Tess (Hudson) had been searching for it for years, until an accidental discovery clues them in that they’re finally on the right track.With the exception of Donald Sutherland, the movie loses momentum whenever the supporting actors are on-screen and the burden of the caricaturized characters sink the movie even deeper than the plotline.The action scenes were good, especially at the end, and although there is violence, most of it is off camera. A couple of swear words and a few naughty scenes make for a PG-13 movie that should be found guilty of breach of promise.Amanda Richards, June 7, 2008

Don’t Listen to the fools that dislike this movie, the only reason they do not like it is likely bc it’s not the typical form of movie they go for. With movies like Harry Potter, Transformers, Iron Man, Avengers, Battleship, etc., it is easy to overlook smaller movies like this. People are now accustomed to seeing big budget action/adventure films so movie like this are quickly dismissed. It is a pretty good movie, not excellent but worth watching.

That Jess Franco sure was wacky. This ultra-sexy 70′s vamp flick probably arouses me more than any modern softcore film, but it’s still not as good as Vampire Femmes or Vampyres. The woman here isn’t really a vampire in the monster sense of the word. She’s more of an energy sucker, kills by sucking sexual energy from her victims. The bad acting will get on some’s nerves, and the plot is ludicrous, but if you buy this film to begin with, you can’t expect Citizen Kane. A good b-movie sexfest.

The new IMAGE DVD of Jess Franco’s “Female Vampire” is a welcome addition to any Francophile or euro-horror fan’s collection. The movie reeks with an ethereal mood and pace and the euro-lounge theme music (played through about 90% of the flick!) is catchy and will haunt you long afterwards. Irina the lonely vampire goes from one victim to the next — that’s about it for story — but who cares! This is Franco at his best! Be forewarned — this is definitely a Very Mature movie so keep the young ones away! Released in a few different versions over the years, this 101 minute version is closest to “The Loves of Irina” version once released on VHS by Private Screenings. Alternate scenes from the “Erotikill” version are included as a supplement (app. 8 minutes) and basically include all the attack scenes which show Irina drinking blood. For some reason, the alternate scenes are not in chronological order. The movie is letterboxed at 2.35:1 and looks fine, but some shots seem to be over matted (but maybe that’s just the way it is). Image quality is a bit soft and there are two moments of print damage (streaking of image for app. 30 seconds -sprocket hole damage?), but basically it’s a very nice presentation and a MUST BUY!!! The DVD also has one trailer (in French only).

It never fails that every time I experience this film, and I’ve seen it now about three times in the past year, it produces a vastly different reaction each time I view it. I bounce from absolute admiration for Franco’s directorial style, dreamy camerawork and musical score, and committed performances from the cast, to thinking that this is nothing but a cheap, porno-wanna-be-flick with absolutely nothing to do with “vampires”, and no artistic integrity whatsoever. Fortunately, the positive vibes win out over the negative and I, once again, admire this film and all that is right and wrong with it. If I fail to make sense, well good then, because neither does this flick. Ms. Romay is, to say the least, totally uninhibited as she romps about the beautifully filmed outdoor scenes while a Chopin-like score lusciously underscores her every movement. Her scenes with the bed posts are, er…., quite a moment in the Euro-Erotic field, and the way she swishes and moves about on her bed like a pent-up, totally horny young woman about to have an orgasm for the first time is, well…… something to see. I love the moments of male frontal nudity, especially a scene where Ms. Romay is seducing a hotel masseur. The simulated sex is quite laughable, especially since our young man can’t seem to “get it up”. This is quite an atmospheric film and, if you love your 70′s horror/vampire flicks, I think you will find much to admire in this one.Luigi – NYC

So, just this once, toss those hip modern values out the window along with that bathwater. This movie is VIVAH, and it unabashedly hearkens back to India’s more traditional conventions, and specifically that of the arranged marriage. Released in 2006 VIVAH tells the story of two young people, Prem and Poonam, strangers to one another yet destined to be wedded. So it’d be nice if they like each other.Poonam (Amrita Rao) is an orphaned girl from the small town of Madhupur, who was raised in her uncle’s household. She is beautiful and demure and brought up to be obedient and traditional. Despite this, her aunt dislikes her intensely, simply because Poonam is far prettier than her own daughter, never mind that Poonam and her daughter get along very well. Poonam has tried to make the best of it, basking in the love lavished on her by her doting uncle and cousin. But, all her life, she’s longed for a mother’s affection…Prem (Shahid Kapoor) is the youngest son of an industrial magnate in Delhi. Carefree and just about to settle into his career, Prem is very surprised and unprepared when his father proposes an arranged marriage for him. Yet Prem is respectful enough to at least meet his potential bride, an act which proves fatal to his bachelorhood. Instantly charmed by Poonam, Prem promptly gives the nod to the marriage contract. As for Poonam, it’s hard to tell what she’s really thinking because she’s so damned demure, but she seems to reciprocate Prem’s interest. So the contract is finalized, friendships are struck, a romance is fostered, and the nuptials set to take place in six months’ time.As the following weeks and months elapse and the families get better acquainted, Poonam and Prem continue to get ever closer, until that old familiar happens: Poonam and Prem fall in love. And, suddenly, the big day can’t come soon enough. But complications surface. Poonam’s aunt still bears her a deep jealous resentment and, so, what should have been an idyllic time for Poonam is sabotaged by her aunt’s venomous snipings at her uncle, over his extravagant financing of the wedding and over his seeming disregard for his own daughter’s future prospects. Then, on the eve of the wedding, a life-threatening tragedy unfolds, and Poonam and Prem and their families will be tested as never before.Even in Bollywood cinema, the idea of the arranged marriage has taken its share of negative hits. So, every once in a while, for balance’s sake, it’s nice to see a film which espouses the positives of this age-old institution. I don’t necessarily agree with it as I’m more with the free choice side of the fence. But it’s nice to hear from the other point of view. And, more importantly, while not a classic, I do think VIVAH is a movie worth watching. It certainly did well enough at India’s box office.Granted, not much of a plot here in VIVAH. Basically, the film is built on simple moments as it tracks the progression of the arranged marriage, from the contractual conception to the courtship to the consummation of the marriage ceremony. Nothing gossip-worthy happens, and, other than the virulent aunt, all is easy-peasy until the last thirty minutes when the tragic twist surfaces. Sadly, the musical interludes are lackluster. And the sedate pacing and lack of narrative punch might’ve turned me off, except that the superb cast managed to keep me involved. These characters are likable enough (except for the aunt) that you even get immersed in the slow scenes. VIVAH applies a huge chunk of the running time in developing Poonam and Prem’s blossoming relationship, as they overcome their mutual shyness and awkwardness and begin to fall for each other. Theirs isn’t a raging romance. Their subdued personalities don’t lend too much to fiery, over-the-top demonstrations, although there is a moment when Prem shouts “I love you!” in an airport. Rather, theirs is a connection arrived at by achieving a certain mutual comfort level and by clinging to a commitment to and a respect for traditional culture and customs. But, also, that they’re both very attractive people probably didn’t hurt any.Again, the glue of VIVAH is the cast. The two young leads, Shahid Kapoor and the ravishing Amrita Rao, turn in sensitive, if bland, performances. The supporting actors turn out to be as equally important. Particularly great are Anupam Kher and Alok Nath, who respectively play Prem’s wealthy but grounded father and Poonam’s loving uncle and surrogate father. And the fact that you end up hating on Poonam’s dour-faced aunt is, of course, a reflection of Seema Biswas’s very good acting skills.For those with the 2-dvd set, the first disc has the film and song selections. The second disc contains the 19-minute-long “Making of the Film” featurette (average) and the 21-minute-long “Making of the Music” (dull).Graced with a gentle, low key charm and a heartwarming simplicity, the waterworks really come on in the tense and emotional last half hour (Grab your hanky). And yet VIVAH may prove to be too Pollyanna for some. Are arranged marriages really this wonderful? Does love really come after marriage? Well, no, and sometimes. VIVAH is a celebration of this institution and is, for all purposes, a Bollywood fairy tale, an idealization of arranged matrimony. As such, it’s about as real and convincing as, well, as a Bollywood motion picture. Would that all arranged marriages work as well as this one did.

Some people may say that it is too “fluffy, sweet” but isn’t that what we crave after maybe s bad day or week.This movie in my opinion is an instant remedy for a bad day,week, month, bad anything. period the end.

The main story focuses on the growing relationship between the main characters, but the relationships between the main characters and other members of the family as well as the two families, form a core part of the story development. All the characters were great in their roles, particularly the main characters. There is a lot of subtlety in expression and body language that’s wonderfully expressive. The music fit very nicely. It’s a long movie and it would be hard for me to cut anything. Definitely have a hanky for a rough patch. Very sweet treat without crossing the line to syrupy. I can’t bring myself to subtract from the rating for it, but I do wish the “extras” DVD contained deleted scenes.

Jake and the neverland pirates is a good kids show, my son is 5 years old and he has watched this episode several times without getting bored. There is some fun and some education in every Jake and the Neverland Pirates Episode.

I have followed all three seasons of this show and still find it a very enjoyable show to watch. It is light hearted and comedic. The character development has been well done. Despite the two negative reviews currently listed for this show – It is definitely worth seeing for yourself if it is to your liking.

This is a solid family show that never disapoints. I love the characters and the writing and my kids just love the cool gadgets and funny plot lines. Good suspense too with interesting plot lines.
