4Intense classical music and relationship drama
By Paul Allaer
“A Late Quartet” (2012 release, 105 min.) brings the story of the (fictional) “Fugue String Quartet”, portrayed by Philip Seymour Hoffman as Robert, Christopher Walken as Peter, Catherine Keener as Juliette (wife of Robert) and Marc Ivanir as Daniel. As the movie begins, we learn that Peter has the beginnings of Parkinson’s disease and possibly the end of his musical career. Peter contemplates a replacement so as to assure the contunity of the quartet. Robert at that point voices his long-held frustration of “just” being second violinist and would like to share first chair with Daniel, much to Daniel’s dismay. Robert and Juliette get into a huge argument about it and when he feels like she doesn’t “have his back”, Robert has a ill-fated affair with a younger woman. Juliette finds out and promply kicks him out of the house. Meanwhile Daniel fall for the charms of Alexandra (daughter of Robert and Juliette). At this point we are about half-way into the movie. Will Peter recover from his illness to bring one last live performance? Will Robert and Juliette reunite? Is Daniel’s relationship with Alexandra doomed? Will the Fugue String Quartet survive? To tell you more would ruin your viewing experience, you’ll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.Several comments: the acting performances are ACE throughout this movie, none more so than from Philip Seymore Hoffman as the wounded husband and frustrated musician, and in my book better than his much hyped performance in “The Master” earlier this year. But check out also Christopher Walken as he stares into his mortality, just superb. If you don’t care much for classical music, save yourself the trouble as classical music is front and center throughout this movie (the CD soundtrack of this movie, bringing original music from Angelo Badalamenti, best known for his “Twin Peaks” work, and the other assorted classical music is superb too).Bottom line, I enjoyed this movie both for the music and the acting performances, and hence “A Late Quartet” is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

5Classical Masterpiece
By WitchyWriter
This movie my favorite film so far this year. The all star cast, including Christopher Walken and Catherine Keener, give a stunning performance. As a violinist, I can appreciate not only he the dramatic storyline but the struggles of the musicians as well. When a world famous quartet is about to lose one of their own, a lot of unspoken and painful feelings are brought to the front burner. There is competition and resentment and friendships that took twenty-five years to build are threatened. This is a film that will make you cry but there are also moments that will make you laugh. The music was as beautiful as the storyline and I enjoyed the classical pieces interwoven with the movie. This film is a must see for anyone who enjoys a good drama but especially for anyone who has even been involved with or loved music

5A great study of human relations / community life ;-)
By D. Kriz
A surprisingly simple yet “complicated” movie that IMHO was one of 2012′s best. The aging leader and cellist (played by Christopher Walken) of a classical “String Quartet” finds that he must retire due to the onset of Parkinson’s Disease. What now? Well, the “second violinist” (for 25 years …) played by Philip Seymour Hoffman takes the opportunity to suggest to the first violinist that he’d “kinda like to play first violin on occasion.” The first violinist (played by Mark Ivanhir) a true virtuoso and perfectionist is aghast. The second violinist’s wife (and viola player rounding out the Quartet) who’s spent her entire adult life playing in this Quartet and, in fact, only met her husband through their playing in the Quartet together kinda agrees with the first violinist :-) … What now? ;-) What a GREAT story about human / Community dynamics and Life ;-) ;-)

4Carnahan’s best work to date? Possibly
By C. Sawin
There were a lot of things that felt like they were kept secret on purpose before sitting down and viewing The Grey for the first time. The trailer hints at the movie being nothing more than a survival thriller starring Liam Neeson as he struggles to survive not only the unrelenting cold elements, but also the ferocious wolves that inhabit his surroundings. The Grey is written and directed by Joe Carnahan, the man who brought us Smokin’ Aces and The A-Team. The movie is also produced by Tony and Ridley Scott, which you think the marketing campaign would jump all over but doesn’t even mention. Not only that, but there is quite a bit more to the movie than the trailer and TV spots let on.As the movie begins, Ottway (Liam Neeson) narrates a letter he’s writing to his wife. This segment just made me realize what my life is lacking most right now and that’s a Liam Neeson voiceover for every thought that crosses my mind. Think about that. It’d be the most amazing thing ever. The trailer reveals a few major things: that Ottway is stranded in the middle of nowhere in the blistering cold thanks to a plane crash and that wolves stand in the way of him actually surviving this ordeal. The plane crash itself is one of the best executed in recent memory. The way it’s filmed and edited is downright ruthless. It’s as if you’re on the plane as it goes down. The Grey doesn’t just place you in this blizzard-ridden hell infested with wolves, it kicks your teeth down your throat, laughs in your face, and throws you into it with everything it has.The movie gives new meaning to some of the simplest things. Seeing your breath in cold weather takes on an entirely new definition and the way The Grey deals with death just feels incredibly powerful. Ottway questions faith right from the start and takes matters into his own hands throughout the movie. The events that transpire take a toll on even the most religious plane crash survivors. Death is more of a relief than something worth distancing yourself from. Ottway describes it as being a warm sensation and thinking about the thing you love most in life before completely giving yourself into it. Many of the campfire conversations are entirely more impactful than they have any right to be. The conversation about faith in general hits you like a potato sack full of cinder blocks. The Grey manages to shout its message even when there’s nothing being said on-screen. One of the images that stuck with me long after the movie ended was the shot of blood flowing into the paw print of a wolf in the snow. There’s a scene by the river that strictly relies on sound and the way you succumb to it is nothing more than brilliant. There’s another shot at the end of the film where (and I’m trying to avoid spoilers the best I can) Ottway is arranging some objects in the snow. The way Liam Neeson’s fat, sausage-like fingers delicately wrap themselves around these objects and the way his hands tremble as he does this illustrates not only what this man has been through, but also that he’s at the end of his rope. Plus the movie will make you want to look over your shoulder the next time you consider relieving yourself out in nature somewhere. That level of greatness The Grey eventually achieves isn’t around at all times. Some lame dialogue does squeak through and characters manage to do really stupid things at times (John Diaz, played by Frank Grillo, especially), but that seems to help the movie more than anything. People, real people, occasionally do stupid things especially when they’re scared. So this kind of made the characters feel more genuine and made it very clear that certain characters were caving under pressure. There was a movie that came out back in 2000 that was called Vertical Limit. It was one of my most trying times at the movie theater. I fought vehemently to leave about halfway through because I hated it so much, but I was with people at the time who wanted to stay until the end. It was probably one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had to pay for. The Grey is basically everything I wanted that movie to be. The cast is fantastic, their actions are mostly believable, and there’s this meaning to everything that really speaks to you.The Grey is a grainy thriller that knocks the wind out of you on more than one occasion. In fact, it’s rare that the movie actually allows you to catch your breath. Everything is such a raw, vicious, and brutal test of faith. It’s fantastically violent and Liam Neeson is superb. If The Grey is anything to fall back on, then 2012 is going to be one hell of a year for movies.

3A wolf in sheep’s clothing
By James Beswick
The basic problem of The Grey is the difference between what the filmmakers think they had and what the marketing department wanted to sell. This is promoted as a dramatic survival action movie in the trailers and even Liam Neeson’s talk-show circuit tour pushed the same line – a plane crashes and a bunch of guys have to survive things that want to eat them. Kind of ‘Alive’ meets Jurassic Park. With Ra’s al Ghul.Unfortunately, it’s this difference that’s going to disappoint most of the audience. The film starts with Liam’s melancholic voice-over (which isn’t a good sign) and a fairly dim setup of oil-riggers beating the ever-loving out of each other. We then see Liam shooting a wolf, lamenting the loss of his wife and then putting a rifle in his mouth and contemplating sparing us from another 2 hours of this. And it gets more depressing from there when the trip home ends abruptly in a plane crash. It’s at this point that the film’s indecision about what it is becomes a real problem. As an action or survival film, Liam guides his band of survivors in the most irresponsible way possible, making mistake after mistake and fundamentally dooming them all to becoming wolf entree. There are some basic errors, such as a stack of shotgun shells packed with his rifle, and anybody who’s familiar with wolf behavior is going to be really unhappy at their depiction in this film. Anyone from Alaska is going to be even more unhappy at the depiction of swimming in rapids too. Also as an action film, the wolves have a supernatural capability to outsmart the survivors and behave more like Spielberg’s raptors than any real life wolf. At one point they jump a ravine and the wolfs are waiting with GPS precision. They pick off our band of survivors one at a time, leaving us with intermittent testosterone-fueled in-fighting to pass as drama. If only Liam hadn’t left the crash site, where rescue teams would already have arrived with burgers and cocoa. But here’s the problem – it’s not an action film. It’s not a survival film either. It’s a psychological drama about facing death where the wolves act as furry metaphors for the grim reaper. From the very first scene to the last, Liam Neeson (who’s very good as always) emphasizes this theme and it reverberates over and over. And that’s where the film could have been quite good and a welcome break from the survival genre but unfortunately it’s too late by the time it becomes clear that the wolves’ uncanny supernatural sense has a very good explanation. My guess is that the everyone expecting an action drama is going to be very unhappy, along with animal rights, PETA, Alaskans and oil-riggers. It’s a real shame they didn’t recut the trailer before the release.

5What is the meaning of life?
By Carla G. Dávalos Rdz
Countless philosophers and religions have tried to answer that by actually giving us a set of commandments, rules or viewpoints to actually give meaning to something we simply do not have a straight answer for. In the end, the meaning of life is the meaning we ourselves give to it.The Grey is all about this, had the writer director for this move have been a fan of normal Hollywood movies with a lollipops for everybody and a happy endings this probably would never have made, and that would have been such a shame. The basic premise of the movie is pretty simple; a plane crashes in the middle of Alaska and a group of survivors try to make their way into civilization while being hunted by the local wolves. I could talk about the magnificent photography, the brilliant casting of Liam Neason or the stark beauty of the Alaskan landscape, but instead I will focus on what becomes the central point of this movie; when everything seems to be against you, what is it that truly matters to us, what makes us tick and in the end when everything seems to be done, what comfort do we get out of it?The answer is as varied as the characters of the movie itself, and in a sense some have that quite moment of reflection take away from them by the circumstances, and some others simply have the moment come upon then after everything else seems to be exhausted.Rarely have I watched a movie and felt this weight upon me, because we might dodge the issue and try to justify the way we have lived and the things we have done, but it is with movies like these that we feel a creeping feeling that we might have take our time for granted or numbed ourselves in our petty little lives surrounded by our petty little machines and toys…but in the end we face the reality of the meaning of our lives…and we might find it lacking, or surprisingly fulfilling …Do not watch this movie looking to pass a few fun hours, try to see is for what it is, a masterpiece of modern cinema that dares to make us come face to face with our deepest demons and the way we deal with them in our everyday lives….

5Tragedy at 35,000 feet
By Big Al
**This review is on Nova Volume 6, Ep. 10 “Crash of Flight 447″**On June 1, 2009, Air France Flight 447 fell out of the night sky over the Atlantic Ocean killing all 216 passengers and 12 crew members on board. In this program “Nova: Crash of Flight 447″ broadcast on PBS on February 16, 2011, investigators piece together available weather and radar data as well as automatic electronic messages from the airplane transmitted through the airwave, in an effort to reconstruct the tragic event and the possible cause of the crash. It is an aviation detective story. I found the program riveting.**Spoiler Alert** The rest of this review may contain spoilers.SYNOPSIS – The crew of Flight 447, with the limited range of the on-board weather radar, apparently flew the airplane into a severe thunderstorm over the Altantic Ocean at 35,000 feet, unable to detect it visually in the pitch darkness of the night. Then the three Thales pitot tubes of the air-speed indicator froze up when the airplane encountered super-cooled water droplets at high altitude, which totally overwhelmed the heaters of the tubes. Without reliable airspeed data, the automatic controls of the highly computerized Airbus A330-200 aircraft shut down one by one in rapid successions. The crew was forced to fly the airplane manually. Standard procedure in the event of an air speed indicator failure is to set the engine thrust at 85% and adjust the pitch of the airplane up 5 degrees. The show suggests that the crew was simply overwhelmed by the event and failed to do so. The plane stalled and fell into the Atlantic Ocean killing everybody on board. It hints that pilots of modern highly computerized airliners are not trained adequately to react to emergencies which require skilled manual control of the aircraft. The show ends with the note that a year later, authorities were still looking for the on-board black box containing vital voice and flight data, which might shed light on the cause of the accident.Footnote: On May 2011, the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder of Flight 447 were found at 12,000 feet on the ocean floor. An interim report confirms that the pilots had not applied the standard unreliable airspeed procedure. It paints a picture of an aircrew overwhelmed by inconsistent data and warning signals and unable to control the aircraft.

5NOVA is programming we can all be proud of.
By Christopher Walter
They are not afraid to do a program that is controversial either. There are few programs I can compare NOVA because it is a standard of excellence that I associate with NOVA. I have to laugh when I hear about funding cuts to public broadcasting. NOVA is proof of how programming like this is some of the best way to spend education dollars. If you do not like or agree with an episode in this format skip to a different one that is why on demand works

There is nothing like NOVA. I grew up with NOVA. Remember Leonard Nimoy? Well, NOVA has evelved since those days. There are those documentaries on The Science Channel but they just don’t cover stories quick like NOVA. NOVA has the special touch and dives deeper than any other documentary media source.

4Unit – Corps – God – Country.
By Themis-Athena
How much critical thought can the military allow its rank and file? Certainly most orders must be followed unquestioningly; otherwise ultimately the entire Armed Services would collapse. But where do you draw the line? Does it matter how well soldiers know not only their military but also their civic duties? Does it matter whether trials against members of the military are handled by way of court-martials, or before a country’s ordinary courts?I first saw “A Few Good Men” as an in-flight movie, and after the first couple of scenes I thought that for once they’d really picked the right kind of flick: A bit cliched (yet another idle, unengaged lawyer being dragged into vigorously pursuing a case against his will), but good actors, a good director and a promising storyline. Then the movie cut from the introductory scenes in Washington, D.C. to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and Jack Nicholson (Colonel Nathan Jessup) inquired: “Who the f**k is PFC William T. Santiago?”And suddenly I was all eyes and ears.Director Rob Reiner and Nicholson’s costars describe on the movie’s DVD how from the first time Nicholson spoke this (his very first) line in rehearsal he had everybody’s attention; and the overall bar for a good performance immediately rose to new heights. Based on my own reaction, I believe them sight unseen. Or actually, not really “unseen,” as the result of Nicholson’s influence is there for everybody to watch: Never mind that he doesn’t actually have all that much screen time, his intensity as an actor and the personality of his character, Colonel Jessup, dominate this movie more than anything else; far beyond the now-famous final showdown with Tom Cruise’s Lieutenant Kaffee. Nobody could have brought more power to the role of Jessup than Nicholson, no other actor made him a more complex figure, and nobody delivered his final monologue so as to force you to think about the issues he (and this film) addresses; and that despite all the movie’s cliches: The reluctant lawyer turning out a courtroom genius (as lead counsel in a murder trial, barely a year out of law school and without *any* prior trial experience, no less), the son fighting to rid himself of a deceased superstar-father’s overbearing shadow, and the “redneck” background of the victim’s superior officer Lieutenant Kendrick (Kiefer Sutherland, who nevertheless milks the role for all it’s worth).Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, who adapted his own play, reportedly based the story’s premise – the attempted cover-up of a death resulting from an illegal pseudo-disciplinary action – on a real-life case that his sister, a lawyer, had come across in the JAG Corps. (Although even if I take his assertion at face value that assigning the matter to a junior lawyer without trial experience was part of the cover-up, I still don’t believe the real case continued the way it does here. But be that as it may.) Worse, the victim is a marine serving at “Gitmo,” the U.S. Naval Base at Guantanamo Bay, where *any* kind of tension assumes an entirely different dimension than in virtually any other location. In come Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) and co-counsels Lt. Sam Weinberg (Kevin Pollack) and Lt.Cmdr. JoAnne Galloway (Demi Moore), assigned to defend the two marines held responsible for Santiago’s death; L.Cpl. Harold Dawson (Wolfgang Bodison) and PFC Louden Downey (James Marshall), who claim to have acted on Kendrick’s orders to subject Santiago to a “code red,” an act of humiliating peer-punishment, after Santiago had gone outside the chain of command to rat on a fellow marine (none other than Dawson), attempting to obtain a transfer out of “Gitmo.” But while Kendrick sternly denies having given any such order and prosecuting attorney Captain Ross (Kevin Bacon) is ready to have the defendants’ entire company swear that Kendrick actually ordered them to leave Santiago alone, Kaffee and Co. believe their clients’ story – which ultimately leads them to Jessup himself, as it is unthinkable that the event should have occurred without his knowledge or even specific direction.By the time of this movie’s production, Tom Cruise had made the part of the shallow youngster suddenly propelled into manhood one of his trademark characters (see, e.g., “The Color of Money,” “Top Gun” and “Rain Man”); nevertheless, his considerable skill (mostly) elevates Kaffee’s part above cardboard level. Demi Moore gives one of her strongest-ever performances as Commander Galloway, who would love to be lead counsel herself in accordance with her rank’s entitlements, but overcomes her disappointment to push Kaffee to a top-notch performance instead. Kevin Pollack’s, Kevin Bacon’s and J.T. Walsh’s (Jessup’s deputy Lt.Col. Markinson’s) performances are straight-laced enough to easily be overlooked, but they’re fine throughout and absolutely crucial foils for Kaffee, Galloway and Jessup; and so, vis-a-vis Dawson, is James Marshall’s shy, scared Downey, who is clearly in way over his head. The movie’s greatest surprise, however, is Wolfgang Bodison, who, although otherwise involved with the production, had never acted before being drafted by Rob Reiner solely on the basis of his physical appearance, which matched Dawson’s better than any established actor’s; and who gives a stunning performance as the young Lance Corporal who will rather be convicted of murder than take an unhonorable plea bargain, yet comes to understand his actions’ full complexity upon hearing the jury’s verdict.”Unit – corps – God – country” is the code of honor according to which, Dawson tells Kaffee, the marines at “Gitmo” live their lives; and Colonel Jessup declares that under his command orders are followed “or people die,” and words like “honor,” “code” and “loyalty” to him are the backbone of a life spent defending freedom. Proud words for sure: But for the “code red,” but for the trespass over that invisible line between a legal and an immoral, illegal order they might well be justified. That line, however, exists, and is drawn even in a non-public court-martial. I’d like to believe that insofar at least, this movie gets it completely right. Also recommended:BasicRules of EngagementThe FirmThe BorderGuantanamo: ‘Honor Bound to Defend Freedom’The Caine Mutiny (Collector’s Edition)

5Nicholson and Cruise Square Off
By Reviewer
In one of the most telling scenes in this movie, Navy Lieutenant Commander Jo Galloway (Demi Moore), a lawyer who is helping to defend two Marines on trial for murder, is asked why she likes these guys so much. And she replies, “Because they stand on a wall, and they say `nothing is going to hurt you tonight, not on my watch’.” Which veritably sums up the sense of duty and honor which underscores the conflict of “A Few Good Men,” directed by Rob Reiner, and starring Jack Nicholson and Tom Cruise. There is a code by which a good Marine must live and die, and it is: Unit, Corps, God, Country. But to be valid, that code must also include truth and justice; and if they are not present, can the code stand? Which is the question asked by director Reiner, who examines the parameters of that code with this film, which centers on the murder of a young Private First Class named William Santiago, who was killed while stationed at the Marine Corps base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The case draws the attention of Commander Galloway, Special Counsel for Internal Affairs in the Judge Advocate General’s Corps in Washington, D.C. Galloway, taking into consideration the impeccable service records of the two Marines charged with the crime, convinces her superiors that a thorough investigation is warranted in this case, though there are those in high places who would rather see this one plea bargained and put to rest.

Galloway persists, however, believing that Santiago’s death may have resulted from a “Code Red,” a method of disciplinary hazing employed in certain circles of the Corps, though illegal. And if this was a Code Red, the real question is, who gave the order? Ultimately, her tenacity prevails, but though Galloway is a seasoned lawyer, she has little actual courtroom experience, so Lieutenant Daniel Kaffee (Cruise) is assigned to the case, along with Lieutenant Sam Weinberg (Kevin Pollak), with Galloway, as ranking officer, to assist. Kaffee, the son of a legendary lawyer, has skated through the first nine months of his Naval career, successfully plea bargaining forty-four cases. Outwardly upbeat and personable, Kaffee seems more concerned with his softball game than he does with the time he has to spend on the job. But underneath, he’s coping with living his life in the shadow of his late father’s reputation, which is an issue with which he must come to terms if he is to successfully effect the outcome of this case. And on this one he will have a formidable opponent: Colonel Nathan R. Jessup (Nicholson), who commands the base at Guantanamo.

As Jessup, Nicholson gives a commanding performance, and once he enters the film you can sense the tension he brings to it, which begins to swell immediately, and which Reiner does a great job of maintaining right up to the end. Jessup is a soldier of the old guard, a man of narrow vision and a particular sense of duty; to Jessup there’s two ways of doing things: His way and the wrong way. He’s a man who– as he says– eats breakfast three hundred yards away from the enemy, and he’s not about to let a couple of lawyers in dress whites intimidate him. And that’s exactly the attitude Nicholson brings to this role. When he speaks, you not only hear him loud and clear, you believe him. It’s a powerful performance and, as you would expect from Nicholson, entirely convincing and believable.

Cruise, also, gives what is arguably one of the best performances of his career as Kaffee. He perfectly captures the aloofness with which Kaffee initially regards the case, as well as the determination with which he pursues it later. Cruise is convincing in the role, and some of the best scenes in the film are the ones he plays opposite Nicholson in the courtroom, the most memorable being one in which Kaffee exclaims to Jessup, “I want the truth!” to which Jessup replies, “You can’t handle the truth!” And the atmosphere fairly crackles.

Moore is outstanding, as well, and she manages to hold her own and make her presence felt even in the scenes dominated by Nicholson and Cruise. It’s a fine piece of acting by Moore, who deserves more than just a passing mention for it. Also turning in notable performances are Pollak, whose dry humor adds such an extra touch to the film, and Wolfgang Bodison, who makes an impressive screen debut as Lance Corporal Dawson, on of the Marines on trial for the murder of Santiago.

The supporting cast includes Kiefer Sutherland (Kendrick), Kevin Bacon (Ross), James Marshall (Downey), J.T. Walsh (Markinson), Cuba Gooding Jr. (Hammaker) and Christopher Guest (Dr. Stone). A powerful drama, superbly delivered by Reiner, “A Few Good Men” is a thought provoking, unforgettable motion picture that makes you take pause for a moment to consider some things that are for the most part out of sight and out of mind. Like who is on that wall tonight, and are we safe because of him. And it makes you reflect upon some things perhaps too often taken for granted. And that’s what really makes this film so good; and it’s all a part of the magic of the movies.

2Good Actors in a Movie That Knows Nothing About the Military
By Duane Thomas
I think, if I’d never spent any time in the military, and didn’t know how the military, and the people who make it up, operate (like, for instance, the writer and director of this movie don’t), I’d have liked it a whole lot more. But having spent 10 years on active duty in the Army, there were two things about this movie that spoiled for me most of the enjoyment I might otherwise have gotten from it:

(1) The Tom Cruise character constantly smarts off to the Demi Moore character. His boss. His superior officer. He’s a lowly Lieutenant, she’s a Lieutenant Commander. In other words, he’s a company grade officer; she’s a field grade officer. This is a big deal in the military. My experience dealing with women of rank in the military is that, having invaded and excelled in a male dominated field of endeavor, they tend to be very concerned the men under their command won’t respect them. Therefore, they DEMAND you respect them. But every time Moore tells Cruise to do something he ignores her, every time she gives him an order he has some smartass comeback and he refuses. And she just takes it. No woman who’d risen to the rank of Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy could be such a milquetoast. Forget for a moment she’s a woman. ANY officer worth their salt would have yanked Cruise bald the first time he lipped off. Metaphorically speaking (probably).

Finally, he pops off to her in front of the Nicholson character, who says to him, “You know, I just realized something. She outranks you.” At which point, sitting there in the darkened theatre, I muttered to myself, “Thank God someone in this movie finally noticed that.”

(2) The entire premise of the movie is bogus. Okay, two young Marines have beaten a fellow Marine, and because of a previously undetected medical problem he dies. So far so good. BUT the Cruise character, a JAG officer of years of experience, believes that if he can prove they were ordered to beat the dead Marine, they’ll be let off. Because they were only following orders. Which is what soldiers/Marines are supposed to do, right? And Moore, with even greater experience than he, agrees. So we’ve got Tom Cruise, working and slaving and agonizing over how he’s going to prove Kiefer Sutherland ordered these two Marines to beat another Marine, and that Jack Nicholson knew about it.

Uno-teeny-tiny problemo. According to military law, no military member has a duty to obey an unlawful order. On my first day in Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, they taught us that “I was just following orders” is not a valid defense if you break military law, that being ordered to break the law does not relieve you of the moral and intellectual responsibility to realize what you’re being told to do is wrong, and refuse to do it. As a matter of fact, one of the first things – literally – they taught me in the Army was how to refuse an illegal order without being insubordinate. But Cruise – who should know better – figures if he can prove these guys WERE ordered to commit the actions that resulted in manslaughter he can skate them free. In the real world, any JAG officer with two brain cells to rub together knows that’s not the case. Realistically, at most, he can take Sutherland and Nicholson down with them, for their part in the crime, but there’s no way on God’s green earth his clients aren’t going to be convicted. But he doesn’t realize that. And he should.

This was obviously a movie written and directed by people who’ve never been in the military, who don’t understand how the military, and military law, works. This is a fatal flaw in a movie dealing with the military, and military law. They believe that soldiers/Marines are dogged robots who just mindlessly follow orders. And if you can prove they were following orders, they can’t be held accountable for their actions. False. I’ve heard the attitude that the end of this movie, when the two Marines are convicted and sentenced for their actions, is a horrible, horrible thing. It’s not. It’s what would have happened in a real military trial. At least they got that much right.

On the other hand, Jack Nicholson as a hardcore Marine full bird Colonel (talk about casting against type) is worth two stars all on his own.

5“I surely am not unfond of this DVD set, I tell you what”
By mwreview
King of the Hill is one of the best T.V. shows around. It is hilarious yet intelligent with unforgettable and very believable characters (who doesn’t know someone like the government-hating, paranoid Dale or the self-aggrandizing Peggy?). Like the first DVD set, Season 2 if compiled with a lot of professionalism and care. The extras on these DVDs are very unique and creative. My favorites are the deleted and extended scenes. There is commentary on at least one episode per disc by the characters or the creators that are entertaining and interesting, although the character commentaries are better on the first season disc set. The designers of this set also give the viewer an inside look at how animated T.V. shows are made through the “Animation Evolution” featurette which has many options. Other extras include The Arlen School of Drawing tutorial, music inspired by the Hills, and book excerpts from “The Boy Ain’t Right.”

Season Two has 22 episodes which include the following: (1) How to Fire a Rifle Without Really Trying: Bobby discovers he excels at shooting but Hank’s traumatic childhood may prevent them from participating in the father-son funshoot; (2) Texas City Twister: One of my favorites. Hank tries to save Peggy and Luanne from a twister headed for the Shiny Pines trailer park; (3) The Arrowhead: Peggy is intrigued by an archeologist but Hank is suspicious; (4) Hilloween: A fanatic church member tries to cancel Halloween in Arlen; (5) Jumpin’ Crack Bass: Hank finds a cool new fishing “bait”; (6) Husky Bobby: Another favorite. Bobby becomes a model for husky boys…over Hank’s body!, (7) The Man Who Shot Cane Skretteburg: Hank and the gang are humiliated during a paintball incident; (8) The Son That Got Away: Connie, Bobby, and Joseph visit the make-out caves; (9) Bobby Slam: Connie wants to try out for the wrestling team; (10) The Unbearable Blindness of Laying: Another favorite! Hank goes blind after seeing his mother and male companion “in the act,” (11) Meet the Manger Babies: Luanne starts a puppet show.

Episodes on the next two discs: (12) Snow Job: Hank discovers his boss uses an electric stove; (13) I Remember Mono: Peggy suspects her husband made out with a classmate back in high school; (14) Three Days of Kahndo: Hank and Dale must sneak over the border to get out of Mexico; (15) Traffic Jam: Hank and Bobby encounter a Chris Rock-like traffic school instructor; (16) Hank’s Dirty Laundry: A local video store accuses Hank of not returning racy videos; (17) The Final Shinsult: Cotton and Dale are in cahoots; (18) Leanne’s Saga: Luanne’s mother is back and falls for Bill; (19) Junkie Business: A great parody of real life, Hank hires a drug addict and finds out he cannot fire him without breaking some discrimination law; (20) Life in the Fast Lane, Bobby’s Saga: Bobby get a job at the Speedway with a mentally unstable boss; (21) Peggy’s Turtle Song: Bobby is diagnosed with ADD and Peggy decides she must become a full-time mom to help him, but becomes bored and signs up for guitar lessons from a feminist; (22) Propane Boom-Part I: The Mega Lo Mart threatens Stricklen Propane. This one was part of that “Who’s going to die?” cliff hanger.

5THIS is why you buy DVDs
By John Smith
First, I am assuming you already know that King of the Hill is an excellent show, and that Season 2 was one of the best. But these 5 stars have nothing to do with that – they are because these DVDs have some of the greatest extra content I’ve ever seen.Nearly 2 minutes of extra scenes for every episode, great commentary, extra “books” on each DVD (for 4 total) that take ~20 minutes each to read – and none of this is junk, it’s all positively hilarious. A lot of it is a little more “edgy” than what got into the final episodes – I think one of the best parts of King of the Hill is that it typically was *not* edgy, but it is still fun to see the deleted scenes that are. Some of it’s the little things – there’s not a seperate tacked on DVD of extra features – the extras go right along with the episodes, you can watch an episode then see the deleted scenes right away without changing disks. Funny, creative and well laid out menus, great cover art, the list goes on.There is absolutely nothing more I could ask for, these DVDs surpass similar sets from The Simpsons or Family Guy ten fold. I cannot wait to buy the remaining sets as they come out. Very highly recommended.

Another excellant job by Amanda Burton. This is one gritty show and it is not for the faint of heart. It reminds me of CSI. The episodes are exciting and they keep your interest. If you like English police or mystery shows you will like this one.

4Not what I was expecting from Denise… in a GREAT way!
By Cat
I have a ton of fitness videos, and picked this one up on a whim. I am SO glad I did! I was surprised at how efficient the entire program was.. it was fast moving, but I felt like my entire body was worked, and worked well. I almost gave up on Denise after her Burn Fat Fast video, which was frustrating in that it didn’t provide a high intensity workout.I completed the entire program tonight, and it was FUN and not in a dancy, breezy way – but in a way that moved along without getting boring.Beginners will definitely get frustrated with this because it IS Denise, and her cueing is atrocious.. BUT if you exercise often, and are familar with a variety of moves you will catch on quickly. I highly recommend this dvd for exercisers wanting to throw in some great variety (which there is a TON in this video) I am now a happy (boot)camper!

5I used to run 10k a day
By A. Frank
I used to be a very active athlete..running, basketball, gymnastics…you name it. A couple of months ago I graduated college and moved out to a tiny apartment in a big city with my boyfriend and needed to find a way to workout without paying big bucks for a gym and without running in the dangerous area I live in.This was the answer. I consider myself in great shape, and was very skeptical about girly workout videos. Since I started this video my flexibility improved greatly, I’ve become more defined, and my balance has improved. I never weigh myself, but if you eat your greens and use this workout tape, you will lose fat. Also, I’m very muscular and was worried about getting “big,” and this doesn’t do that at all.I was also very concerned about how cheesy this was going to be. I didn’t want to look like an idiot working out in front of my boyfriend, and you really don’t do anything ridiculous, like some of the dance cardio stuff out there. In fact, sometimes he jumps in and tries to keep up.My suggestion: do the 40 minute workout every other day, and use Carmen Electra’s Fit to Strip (disk 2) every other day. Results are amazing.

2Not my cup of tea…
By Vicki Williamson
I bought this DVD in hopes that I could work it in with the rotation of the other exercise DVD’s I own in an effort to keep from plateauing. I was very disappointed with the workout on the DVD. I am not going to criticize Denise though because I found her as the host/leader to be alright. What I didn’t care for was the choreography on this DVD. There were several things about the choreography that I didn’t like such as the fact that so few reps are done on each exercise and just as you really getting into one exercise it is time to move on to the next. There is a lot of jumping and bouncing involved which I don’t really care for, and this workout requires you to have an extraordinary amount of balance. I also didn’t feel like I worked out. I consider this DVD to be a moderate workout and I was hoping for a heavy workout. I also felt like this DVD was misleading. On the case it says there is kick boxing and there was very little kick boxing used in this workout. All in all, I just didn’t really like this workout DVD and found it boring and it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I do, however, highly recommend Kathy Smith, Leslie Sansone or TamiLee Webb.

5Excellent. NOVA does it again
By Learner
This is the clearest explanation I’ve seen of relativity, quantum theory, the nature of space and time – even Newton. Very very good science documentary.NOVA has surpassed its usual high standards. It’s obvious they thought carefully about how to visually explain the concepts. They did an admirable job in trying to appeal to a broad audience, including to curious people who aren’t well-read about science. If you like eye-grabbing graphics you are in luck here. But this show was also enjoyable to me, even though I was already familiar with many of these ideas. As is NOVA’s trend in recent years, for me there was too much hyperactivity in the presentation. But I assume they do this to appeal to younger audiences, and this show will without a doubt be presented in high schools for years to come. The last part of episode one was mind-blowing, that our universe is like a hologram. I didn’t really understand it, but it’s a very interesting idea to say the least. (I did see some science news articles a few months ago saying this idea has now been mostly disproved, but maybe those news articles were premature.)Having seen the previous Brian Greene series named The Elegant Universe years ago, I had high expectations for this new series. Even more so because where Elegant Universe is mostly about only string theory, Fabric of the Cosmos is broader, covering space, time, quantum physics, and multiverses – all core ideas to physics. Now I’m reading the book, The Fabric of the Cosmos: Space, Time, and the Texture of Reality. If you are interested in science or just enjoy an excellent documentary, this is a must-have DVD. If you are well-read in science, you may not hear much new here. But you may well see things presented in a new way. And in the end, it’s all about the wonder.[Update] I saw an after-show Q&A with Brian Green at the World Science Festival website. About a third way through, Leonard Susskind joins and gives more good explanation of the holographic principle. It sounds like it’s still very much a viable theory.

5well done brian green.

I have used the 3 DVD’s of the original Elegant Universe in my introductory Astronomy courses. Students really liked that series.I have seen 3 episodes of the “Fabric of the Cosmos” now. The Episode on Time is alright but not superb. The episode called “Quantum leap” is superb and I will definitely use it for my introductory astronomy courses. The 3rd episode on “String theory” is even better than the original Elegant universe. The part about Einstein and Neil Bohr is superb. The explanation of Quantum Entanglement and then the Teleportation is surprisingly digestible. I am thinking of building a course based on the fabric of the universe series. This is a fantastic series for the curious minded people among us. I am definitely buying these DVD’s even though I have seen only 3 of the episodes.

5Amazing and mindblowing.
By nellandis
Saw the first two episodes on PBS last night and was glued to the TV. They explain concepts of the universe in such a clear and conscise manner. It put so many things into perspective and I can’t wait to watch it again along with the other episodes. Dont miss out on this DVD, they did an amazing job putting it together.

5Smart, Stylish, and Dryly Ironic
By Theo
Refreshingly nihilistic and amoral, this classic MTV animated series from the 1990s represented a truly wonderful break from the saccharine pap we’re usually fed. It offered us a take on high school life light years away from the idealised vision to be found in so many shows. What we have here is considerably closer to the brutal – and just plain stupid – reality. What’s more, “Daria” is a show that manages to pull all this off with a dry, rapier wit, and its own tersely ironic sense of style.I know that five star reviews tend to predominate here on Amazon. So much so that it becomes almost a running joke. I think that’s because according to Amazon’s stated guidelines, five stars simply means “I love it!”, and most folks tend to review what they love. But in all honesty, this really is an extraordinarily good piece of animation. One well worthy of five stars by just about any criteria. As is the case with any TV show transferred to other formats, it needs to be acknowledged that there are really two issues here: the show itself and the transfer. As most readers will already know, with Daria the big issue with the transfer was always going to be the music. Because the original show sampled from so many popular artists, a full and faithful reproduction on a non-bootlegged release was always going to be a copyright impossibility. In the end, virtually none of the original background music survived.Given this reality, for the most part I take off my hat to the musicians who did end up providing the substitute background music for the DVD. They took on what was always going to be a thankless task and for the most part acquitted themselves pretty well. True, there are moments here and there where the music they provide is noticeably weaker than what we heard in the TV original. But overall they do a fairly solid job. Personally, what I miss most is not the lost background music per se, but the varied and eclectic range of songs used as end title music in the original broadcasts. These often provided an ironic or poignant counterpoint to the themes explored in the episode. Now for the show itself. In my opinion, the first two seasons really do see Daria at her best. I don’t think this season (season two) is quite as good as the first, but it is very close. Hereafter… things begin to go downhill. Slowly and intermittently at first, but by progressively greater leaps and bounds. The most marked change is that Daria the sardonic observer of human folly is replaced by Daria the moral crusader. The show’s dry edge isn’t entirely lost, but it is substantially dulled.Curiously, the season two opener is an episode called “Arts ‘n’ Crass” where Daria and Jane collaborate on an artistic work that is then horrendously sanitized by school administrators. I can’t help but wonder if the irony here is deliberate: if there was at least someone behind the scenes who fully grasped what was being done to the show, and felt the urge to give voice to this protest. If so, the protest is remarkably clever and doubly ironic, because how Daria and Jane handle the situation that has been thrust upon them fits seamlessly in with the show’s new direction. A direction that is ultimately spelled out quite plainly in all its awfulness at the other end of the season, in the final episode “Write Where it Hurts”. That one really does rather ominously show us the way of things to come.Fortunately, the episodes between these two bookends are for the most part in the spirit of season one. It is for this reason that I’m still able to give this season five stars. Things don’t really descend into full blown sermonising until season three. So for true diehard fans of the show’s original vision, this is your final chance to bask in the light of that vision (dare I say, “the harsh light of reality”?) before the coming of the dark times.Enjoy it while it lasts!Theo.

Always amazing how right they portrayed things.Like how a little effort by good looking but not so bright people made the good looking appear to be extra good of extra smart while truly gifted languished on the side sidelines keeping everyone out of trouble.
