A Masterpiece!

Coupling is one of my very favorite shows for several reasons: the terrific actors, the solid scripts, and it simply makes me laugh more than most other sitcoms. This season features a lot of farce and new Jeffisms (such as “porn jelly” and “secret listeners”), but there is also more of an emotional depth given to all of the characters. I can’t review the DVD itself yet, but if the special features and presentation are anything like they were on the second season DVD, that would be fabulous. Here is a recap of the seven episodes of this season:

1.) Split – Picking up where season two left off, we follow Steve and Susan (in a split-screen format) after their breakup. The men and the women head to their own versions of the “Temple of Woman”, before Steve and Susan reunite again.

2.) Faithless – Jane falls for a handsome co-worker at her radio station, James, the host of a Christian program. Meanwhile, Jeff tries to figure out whether his pretty co-worker Wilma likes him as a friend or as something more.

3.) Unconditional Sex – Wilma admits her sexual attraction to Jeff, despite her having a boyfriend and him being involved with Julia. Jeff tries to find a way to stay faithful to Julia without offending Wilma, and confusion ensues.

4.) Remember This – Patrick shows up at Sally’s apartment at 3am, believing Sally had called him to get rid of a spider. It turns out that he had dreamed about the phone call, and he interrups her night with another man. This later prompts Sally and Patrick to reminisce about their first meeting. They describe two very different versions of what happened to their friends.

5.) The Freckle, The Key, and The Couple Who Weren’t – Jeff and Julia’s kinky evening is interrupted by the sudden return of Julia’s ex-boyfriend Joe; Steve and Susan discuss “nether freckling”; Jane is dismayed when she learns surprising details about her new boyfriend, James.

6.) The Girl With One Heart – Much to Steve’s horror, Susan removes the lock on their bathroom door. Later, Patrick brings his new girfriend to Susan and Steve’s dinner party, which leads to a misunderstanding between her and Sally.

7.) Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps – Sally thinks she’s pregnant, so she asks Susan and Jane to take pregnancy tests together with her. The tests get mixed up, but one of them is positive, meaning that one of them is pregnant. Meanwhile, Jane and Jeff bond over their failed relationships with James and Julia, respectively, and Patrick and Sally finally address their feelings for each other.

If you haven’t seen the first two seasons, I urge you rush out and buy them. But this season is even better, and I can’t wait for this DVD to be released.

It’s finally here!

I picked this up the day it was released. Yes, you can watch “Coupling” on BBC America, but these DVD’s are worth it, because they still edit some content for time. With Season 2, you get the following 9 episodes:

THE MAN WITH TWO LEGS: Jeff finally works up the nerve to approach a girl on the tube whose leg he’s been gawking at each day. Will he blow it with another one of his bumbling lines?

MY DINNER IN HELL: Steve bumps into a television presenter he’s always fantasized about, and Jane has a fool-proof hairbrained scheme that she swears will help she and Sally meet her.

HER BEST FRIENDS BOTTOM: Steve makes a surprise visit at Susan’s apartment, thinking it is she in the shower. It’s Sally, and the entire episode revolves around that fact that Steve saw her bottom.

THE MELTY MAN COMETH: Will Patrick and Sally finally come together? If Patrick doesn’t stop “failing” then perhaps they can!

JANE AND THE TRUTH SNAKE: In possibly one of the funniest episodes ever, Jane loses her job as traffic reporter. Never fear! She has a career plan up her sleeve that involves children’s entertainment and a sock puppet. That’s all I’ll say.

GOTCHA: One year after their first date, a wedding invite is sent to Steven and Susan. Steve, of course, panics into thinking Susan will now pe expecting a proposal herself.

DRESSED: The meaning of Jane’s invite to a dinner date is misunderstood, and she shows up naked under her coat. When she arrives to a flat full of guests, she has to do some quick thinking (rather a lot for Jane, really!).

NAKED: Jeff’s 30th birthday is coming, and his workmates have planned a surprise celebration for him. Again, invites are misunderstood and Jeff ends up stripping down naked in front of his workmates…and his parents!

THE END OF THE LINE: Steve and Susan both assume aliases to swap phone numbers with other people in a bar, but the hilarity ensues when they realize it’s with each other!

Extras include more interviews with the cast and executive producer. What they really need is some outtakes, because I have a feeling they’d be hilarious! Worth every penny.

“A hairy, inquisitive sex octopus?”

I have been a huge fan of this show from the beginning. This DVD’s release date isn’t for a few months, but I wanted to share my insights. The fourth season starts a few weeks after the end of the third season left off, with lots of new twists and turns, great jokes, and compelling stories. The bad news is that Richard Coyle, who plays Jeff, left the show (the character travels to the isle of Lesbos, and you fans can easily decipher the joke, I’m sure). But the good news is that a new character named Oliver, played by Richard Mylan, is an enjoyable enough replacement, despite having big shoes to fill. Here is a recap of the six episodes (if you haven’t seen the finale of season three, then there might be some spoilers):1.) 9 1/2 Minutes – A well-written story from three interweaving points of view, taking place in the bar: a.) Patrick and Sally encounter their first major conflict in their new relationship; b.) Susan is upset with Steve when he shares his odd view about her pregnacy; c.) Jane fears her blind date is her gynecologist, but it turns out to be a goofy guy named Oliver, who runs a sci-fi bookstore.2.) Nightlines – Relationship troubles lead to a late-night phone call between Susan, Sally, Steve, and Patrick. Out of the blue, Jane joins into the conversation, and it is revealed that she keeps a key to her ex-lover’s flat. But it’s not who we expected. Meanwhile, Oliver receives a visit at his store from his ex-girlfriend Tamsin, whom Susan befriended earlier in the day at a seminar for pregnant women.3.) Bed Time – A battle of wits develops between Patrick and Sally, as Patrick attemps to go home after sex, and Sally finds ways to make him spend the night at her place. Later, Sally hosts a dinner party and Oliver, Jane’s date to the party, worries about his “nipple erections”.4.) Circus of the Epidurals – Steve and Susan attend an antenatal class, with Tamsin, Sally, Jane, Oliver, and Patrick in tow. The instructor turns out to be Jill (Jane’s former therapist from season one’s “Inferno”). Steve and the other men in the class are baffled about why a woman in labor would refuse painkillers, leading to a standoff between him and Jill.5.) The Naked Living Room – The evolution Oliver’s flat has gone through after his break-up with Tamsin is shown, becoming “unedited” as the months pass. He runs into Jane at the supermarket one day, and completely panics when she asks him to bring her up to his flat. Later, Susan begins to go into labor.6.) 9 1/2 Months – While waiting for Susan to begin childbirth at the hospital, Steve falls asleep and dreams that a female version of Jeff has returned from Lesbos. Steve recaps the events of the day to her: a.) Sally and Patrick’s relationship changes when she learns the truth about one of his previous partners, and then she discovers a mysterious box hidden in Patrick’s video cupboard; b.) Oliver’s romantic night with Jane is foiled by the arrival of Steve and Susan on the way to the hospital, and he wonders if Jane still has feelings for Steve. Finally, Steve and Susan’s baby is born.Overall, an excellent group of episodes with many funny and touching moments. And although the character of Oliver doesn’t match the greatness of Jeff’s character, fans should still give him a chance. I highly recommend this DVD, which I’ll purchase when it is finally released.
