Roman/american history 101

This was shown to my college course between the chapters on the Etruscans and the Roman Empire. In many ways it is fine because it is about the rise of the Empire, just like the title entails. It has some great stories about Romulus and Remus’ She-wolf mother that are great. However, something that made me fairly mad and embarrassed that I was showing this to my class were these occasional segments describe Early Roman Empire related to the early United States History. So in the middle of talking about the history of Rome, some tweed-wearing expert is all of the sudden talking about Jefferson and how he really liked Rome. If those jingoistic (or self-centered?) segments were edited out, this would be an alright doc.

Thorough, factual and entertaining

This series – and I wish Amazon ran it as a series, since this is the first episode of five or six – is informative, thorough and entertaining. This segment covers Rome’s formation, from the Etruscan period (including Etruscan culture). Great shots of Etruscan artwork are a joy to see. If you’re familiar with Crete’s art, you may see similarities of style. It’s quite intriguing. The formation myth of Romulus and Remus is explained, and Rome’s rag-tag, roughneck beginnings are pretty thoroughly presented. Peter Coyote is an excellent narrator for this series. If you like history, check this out!
